BTW, How well will OS 9 run on the 1400 with 64 MB RAM and the G3
processor?

I'm now on 8.5, but might consider upgrading.

On my 1400+G3/333 with 60MB of RAM, OS 9.1 runs very well. I would update
to 8.6 at a minimum, though, to take advantage of its bug fixes.

I don't know if I would call them really compelling, but 9.1 adds improved
file security, additional shortcuts in the Finder, IP-based AppleShare without
using AppleShareIP, improved Sherlock, Software Update control panel, and
better multiple-user support. There are also some USB enhancements, like
USB printer sharing over TCP, but this is irrelevant on a 1400, of course.

Myself, I prefer 9.1 to 8.6, but it's because I'm used to all the little
niceities. I would still upgrade to 8.6, though. 8.6's nanokernel improves
performance quite a bit.

Thanks for the additional input, Cam, that's very helpful. I currently have
8.5 on this machine (that was what came installed on it), and no
installation CD's for 8 or 9, so I may just stick with what I've got. I may
really need to get an 8 or 9 CD so I can format the blank hard drive that's
now been tranplanted to a backup machine.

It's great to have this forum to get selfless, sharp help on issues, so
thanks to both you and Dave for taking the time to help, it was invaluable.
I am currently running on the 1400 at 233 MHz. For a $10 upgrade, that ain't
bad!

Ciao!

If anyone can provide a step-by-step, I'd be most appreciative. I've
heard
the process is pretty simple, but that doesn't mean I can intuit it
out of

nowhere, and I want to be sure not to break/ruin anything.

Thanks for any help!

Richard (Winfidel)

BTW, How well will OS 9 run on the 1400 with 64 MB RAM and the G3
processor?

I'm now on 8.5, but might consider upgrading. What are the main real
advantages of OS 9?

Thanks!

I once bought a 1400c on eBay ($30 + shipping) that came with a 250 MHz
G3 upgrade. The previous owner didn't knew because he didn't have the
NuPowr extension in the system. I just copied the extension to the
Extensions Folder and it showed as intended in the System Profiler.
You don't need the extension, as the CPU will work at its stated speed,
but the extension enables the cache, making it a little faster, and
permits System Profiler to see the upgraded CPU.

Best regards.

Re: Good luck, and questions on NuPowr upgrade

2005-11-20 Thread Donna Hood Pointer
I know OS 9 needs 64MB RAM and runs on G3, because I had to buy my
daughter an extra 32MB chip to put it on her early iMac. It absolutely
needs 64MB. Carshes the machine with 32MB.

The biggest thing I liked about OS 9 was the Software Update feature,
which was a great improvementg over having to figure out what updates
you needed and where they could be found. However, now all updates are
out for OS 9. I went from System 7 to System 9. I really liked 9.
