1400/9.1/appletalk won't start

2005-12-05 Thread Brian McEwen

Hi all;

I've had this problem once before, but I can't remember nor search
the fix this time.

I have a 1400/G3/9.1 with a working Orinoco gold 802.11b card or a
3COM ethernet card for connectivity.

For whatever reason, the appletalk is not loading, I can't even get
it active enough to try a serverIP connect.

Opening appletalk cdev and picking the wireless card give an error,
"an error occurred using Orinoco, please check your network settings
are correct".

Someone here posted last time the name of a hidden (invisible) file
to delete that I think cleared this; either that, or I did another
clean install of OS9 and copied all my system stuff back over.I
hope the former!!

I've trashed all the regular prefs but it hasn't helped.

Thanks for help;

Brian

Hi,

The battery has 6.7 Volt and the manual i downloaded from apple

It charges/discharges batteries to deal with memory effects. However,
you battery has dead cells, and this won't work.

How can i connect by ethernet (The powerbook has and expansion
ethernet card) my powerbook 1400 and my Pentium III XP direct by
net cable without a hub?, i read that if i run linux i can use
SAMBA, so, MAC 8.5.1 (Or 9.1) to XP?

No. For OS 8 or 9 you'll need DAVE from Thursby Systems to connect to
a PC on the Mac or PC MacLan tinyurl.com/8afg4> on the PC.

If you have a linux system to serve as an intermediate, (though
you'll need a hub or switch) you can have a common share point on the
system, simply use netatalk for
the Mac share and Samba for the PC one. We do that here for one
shared volume on our network.

I have not test the ethernet card yet, how can i do it without
connection?

You really can't. If you plug it in and it's shows as a chooseable
ethernet connection in the TCP/IP settings, there's not much more you
can do to test it except connect it to a network.

How can i uninstall a program? (remember, I am a WINTEL user, until
now :-))

Drag the program or it's folder to the trash...VASTLY easier than
Wintel.

On my old compaq contura 386 laptop and my toshiba satellite 2100
CDS, if i put on starting the F10 key i will run SETUP to configure
and set the BIOS, i bought an ibook powerbook 10 gb hard drive on
eBay and i need to know how configure it before installing or the
powerbook 1400 do it by itself?

No, it should just plug-n-play. There is no BIOS as such on Macs.

I also bought a Compact Flash 56K PC Card Modem Kingston
Technology, i will wait until i receive to ask for help.

Compact flash or PC Card? May not work; the 1400 has PCMCIA slots,
not a PC Card slot, IIRC. That said there are lots of PCMCIA modems
around. If it does fit, then generic Hayes Modem settings and it
should work.

I should get something like that. My scsi scanner is on my G3 so when I
scan I have to email the .tif to myself. By times I can connect to my
pcs with OS X but that is spotty.

Well, maybe; maybe not. The only external cd drive the Powerbook 1400 could
use would have to be SCSI, but not an internal laptop cd drive.

Also, there are external (non-portable and slow, however) SCSI cd-rw drives.
There are also some external portable ones, but most of them are either USB or
firewire, something the 1400 cannot do.

The cd-rom on the Powerbook 1400 came in 6x, 8x, and a 12x speed variations.
The 12x is the only one where the cd-rom can be removed and replaced with a
faster cd-rom; there is a webcite that explains how to put a 20x laptop cd-rom
drive in the 12x Powerbook 1400's cd-rom carrier.

I have no experience personally with this operation, but I know a guy in my
local Apple User Group that once tried to put a slot-loading dvd+-RW drive in a
1400 using the method above. I think he had limited success, but I am sure it
was limited by the 1400's speed and RAM limitations (compared to modern
machines) and the drive would not be able to use the DVD (other than a ROM
drive)
anyway.

I can attest that the Global Village and 3Com modems and ethernet cards I use
in my 1400 and 5300 both require software.

Someone suggested it might be the pram battery, while another said it
was a common problem with Lombards running 10.3. Does anyone else had
trouble turning on their Lombard laptop?

That sounds like a bad L2 cache. If you'll check the G-books list, I've
got a thread on there asking if there are any issues with the Lombards,
because I've got one coming in. I remember reading about this one, and
I'm enclosing that message.
