I don't have a 1400, but I have had experience with ebatts.com- very
good, fast, and excellent CS. Go here
  and click on the
model you have. Also, pay attention the Amp hours- theirs is usually
higher than OEM.

How true. I was just sitting at the park today working on my iBook
while watching my kid play and realized I had forgotten any backup
capability. I fired up MacStumbler and lo and behold: there's someone's
high- speed linksys LAN and me and my Mac just tip- toed right in for a
quick email backup ;) Oh, how I'd love to do that with my 5300cs and
the WaveLAN Turbo card. With the 5300 I wouldn't have to worry so much
that a bird is going to poop on my keyboard while I sit at the bench.

5300cs MV16 installer problem

2003-01-24 Thread Cathy Welsh
Hi everyone,

I recently installed a Lapis MV16 16 bit video card on a 5300cs and I
think I screwed up. When I installed it, I was running 7.5.3 and it
worked fine, but then I wiped the drive and upgraded to OS 8.1 thinking
I could just re- install the drivers for the card. Well, I can't. The
installer stalls at installing the MV16.rom and freezes the machine no
matter what- Extensions off, booting from a floppy, booting from a CD.
I was using the last installer available from Focus, the v 2.0 beta
which is supposed to update the drivers for 8.1, but I can't get the
original drivers from the 1.0.4 installer, which were for 7.x to
install either.

Do I have to go back down to 7.5 to get this in? Is there a workaround?

Thanks for any ideas,

Cathy

Look inside the battery bay (usually upside down) and see if there's a

I'm pretty sure this email was intended to be off- list, but it brings
up a good point- I used to do quite a bit of trading on ebay with Macs
and once I had an old pee-cee laptop to sell. The buyer bought it and
asked if I'd do escrow, and I thought, sure- I have nothing to hide.
Well, he dutifully paid the escrow, so I sent it, but when the guy had
it, he told the escrow company I'd sent a laptop with no HD, RAM or
CPU. Of course, he was lying, but once that parcel is in his possession
there's nothing you can do and it's your word against theirs. So, he
shook me down for a 50% discount, which, I obviously had to accept: We
both knew if I didn't I get back a laptop *without* a HD, RAM or a CPU.

Chalk it up to lessons learned.

It was cool seeing the 5300cs pop up in the G4 iMac's (OSX 10.2.3)

Sort of. The old Lucent brand WaveLAN gold and silver cards were re-
branded some time ago. I think the name and/or companies handling it
have changed about 4 times. Apparently, the Orinco cards are identical
to the WaveLAN except for badging, but Orinco drivers (on Proxim's
site, I believe) state the minimum for running the card are OS9 (or
something higher than what I wanted to run on the 5300cs) whereas the
old Lucent drivers state compatibility down to System 7.5.2 and a PB
down to the 190. The old Lucent drivers are available on
versiontracker. Now, if you find an Orinco card (which seem to be cheap
and plentiful), from what I've read on the list, it should work with
the old Lucent drivers, but I never tested it so I couldn't guarantee
it'd work. BTW, the Lucent WaveLAN silver is exactly what's in my
original ABS. I don't know what's inside the new ones. I imagine if you
could find a dead ABS on ebay (dead from the capacitor problem) for
cheap, you could pull the card from it and use it just fine. The
previous Apple AirPort cards were also manufactured by Lucent, which is
why you see in this thread that AirPort drivers will work for them, as
well. The only difference is that the AirPort card has no built- in
antenna.

HTH,

Cathy

That's what I thought, but I wasn't sure if the old WaveLAn drivers
would run the Orinco cards so I didn't want to give bad advice. As you
know, the old Lucent WaveLAN drivers are the only that list support for
the older machines such as our 5300cs and for OSes below OS 8.6.

We use ancient educational apps and games for our daughter on the
5300cs and many of them won't run on higher OSes or cause problems if
we do. Yes, I agree MacTCP is not very elegant, but we've have no
problems at all once we got it configured.

I see Orinco/Lucent WaveLan/etc. silver cards for sale in the USD 40-
50 range and the old WaveLAN drivers that support down to a 190 (I
think) and System 7.5.2 are available on versiontracker. I'm not
absolutely sure the WaveLAN drivers will work with the Orinco cards,
though. The drivers from Proxim- or whoever they are now- seem to
require OS9- ish.

We got our WaveLan silver from a closeout deal on the 'net for under 40
bucks shipped, and it works perfectly on a 5300cs running 7.5.3.
Configuring the old- school MacTCP was a little bit of a bitch, but
once it was running it tapped right into our DSL AirPort network and we
easily surf wirelessly with it and transfer files among any of our 5
wireless- enabled Macs all running anywhere from Jaguar 10.2.3 to 7.5.3.

Looks like we maybe got the last el- cheapo one from here (very nice
company, BTW) because there's
no price listed anymore, but like I said- they're out there. Try a
Sherlock and you'll find some deals.

*Pretty* sure, Malcolm. We suspected that too, but the System Profiler
doesn't even mention the built- in- it lists the whole 32 megs as
"expansion" with no mention of the soldered (is that usual behavior
when adding expansion RAM?)

5300cs built- in RAM disappearing act

2003-01-14 Thread Cathy Welsh
This was posted by my husband to another list, so it may look familiar
to some of you, but I wanted a second opinion ;)

I upgraded a 5300cs/32MB/750MB/8.1 with a 32MB RAM card and now the
built- in 8MB is not recognized. System Profiler shows 32 MB Built- in,
total, "expansion RAM", but not the 8 MB soldered.

If I take out the card, all is normal and shows the original 8MB just
fine. Put the card back in, the 8MB disappears.

Bad RAM or bad PB?

Any ideas/advice greatly appreciated,

I use a WaveLAN Turbo silver 11mbps card on a 5300cs running 7.5.3
successfully on a DSL AirPort network and it might work for you. I
*think* the current iteration of my Lucent card is now known as the
Orinco silver which is widely available and I've seen for under USD 50.
Also, they have Mac drivers (but the Mac drivers don't list
compatibility down to 7.5.x whereas the Lucent drivers do) and no
limitations as to what kind of 802.11 network they can join, AFAIK.
However, I could be mistaken. I've never used a Belkin router (not
knowingly, anyway, although I've ecrtainly stumbled onto various
networks while traveling), so I could be wrong.

Victoria , I'm no expert, but my guess is that the person who sold you

assumed by looking at System Profiler that the 48 MB it showed was all

Hi Victoria. As you know, I recently got an Apple- refurbished, sealed
5300cs, so, presumably, the battery could have been sitting in the
carton for 5 years. After a few reconditioning cycles, I think it's a
good as it'll be and I get (using Jeremy's CSM) an average of 1 1/2
hrs. of use including a few floppy disk accesses interspersed over an
average of 24- 48 hrs. of sleep time. Because I have the luxury of a
back- up battery, I never plug it in unless recharging overnight after
the battery depletes. I'm kind of fastidious when it comes to batteries
and back- up as you might gather as you read on;)

I don't understand the reporting system used by either Apple's or
Jeremy's CSMs and wether their respective accuracies (or lack thereof)
are because of the limitations of the software or because of difficulty
forecasting these NiMH batteries, but I also will get flaky "time
remaining" and "percent full" reports. Often, while the battery is
showing anywhere from a 30- 70%, I will suddenly get the low battery
warning and then I know I only have a minute or two to save my work and
the PB shuts itself down abruptly. The same applies to my new battery,
but everything (life left, time remaining when I get the low battery
warning and the accuracy of Apple's estimated time, etc.) is doubled.
Anyway, using Jeremy's "historical time remaining" is pretty dead- on
accurate in seeing how much time I have left.

Have you tried Apple's "Battery Recondition" utility? They recommend
using it every month, while e-batts.com, which is where I got my new
battery from, recommends it every 2 weeks for maximum life.

If you do, I highly recommend e- batts.com
  and getting the 3.5 Amp
hour battery. While not exactly a bargain- basement deal, they're
pretty much in line with other retailers prices for brand- new
batteries and the 3.5 Amp hour rating is the highest I've seen and
costs about the same as what I see other places selling their 2.2 or
1.8 Amp hour batteries for. They also sell the lower capacity battery
 for competitive
price and their CS is excellent if you have any questions. The
difference in the higher capacity one is amazing when you're used to
such short charge spans. In fact, the time I get from my new battery is
often longer than my husband gets on his new iBook, albeit I'm only
running 7.5.3 with 8 MB of RAM whereas he's running Jaguar with 256 MB
RAM and burning CDs every now and then.

BTW, I'm not affiliated with e-batts.com other than a satisfied
customer.

Good luck,

Cathy

Here is the d/l page for System 7.5.3 update

Another method which I used (if you have the equipment available, of
course) to quickly install the update was I burned a CD containing all
the update pieces then installed onto my 5300cs via an old external
SCSI CD drive.

5300cs upgrade options?

2003-01-03 Thread Cathy Welsh

Hi all, I'm new to the list as I just bought an Apple- refurbished
5300cs and so far I'm thrilled with it. Here's what I'd like to do and
what I've done so far:

First, it has 8MB of RAm I applied the 7.5.3 update and bought a 3.5
amp hours battery. And we have an Apple extrenal SCSI cd drive for
loading software.

1. What is the best way to treat these batteries? So far, the life on
thenew battery is dynamite and I'd like to keep it that way, but I've
read conflicting advice regarding these NiMH batteries.

Does the Apple battery recondition utility do any good as they suggest
once a month?

Should I let the battery run down completely before I plug it in and
recharge it?

Does it hurt to remove the battery when I'm working at home and then
put the battery back in as needed?

2. Next, while I'd like to get the most performance, the RAm isn't
really an issue. It's mainly used for word processing now, but...

If I do want a RAM upgrade, is it a special 70 ns DRAM or can we use
other compatible SPEC RAM cards we have laying around?

3. I'd like to get an Ethernet PC card. Id I do, will I be able to
Appletalk with my HFS formatted disk to my husband's iBook or if not,
would reformatting to HFS+ allow me to do this and would System 7.5.3
be enough or would I need a more recent OS version?

4. Another option I'd thought of is an 802.11b card. I see that the
Orinco (fka Proxim, fka Farallon) silver cards are quite reasonable now
and Orinco lists it is compatible down to OS 7.5.2.

Will this card work on my 5300cs? I see the specs on the 5300 is a Type
II PC card- is that different than a plain PC card?

TIA for any advice, help,

Cathy
