Re: 2300c Question

2005-03-16 Thread Daniel Palka
There is no way you guys can possibly tell me that OS 9.1 *feels*
faster than OS 8.1. Which is the version I was rooting for. Whilst
some actual operations are probably faster in 9.1 because of the more
PowerPC optimization, 8.1 feels wayyy faster. 7.6.1 feels
wayyy faster than that.
Especially true for those two with Speed Doubler 8 installed. I don't
see what anybody could possibly be doing with a Duo 2300c that would
require OS 8.5 or up. Anything that "requires" those versions is too
intense for a Duo in the first place in my opinion. What are you
trying to run Photoshop 7? Final Cut Pro 1.2.5?

OS 9 takes ten years to boot, and finder redraws (menus, windows,
icons) are definetely noticeably slower. For writing a document in
Word 98, OS 9 is overkill.

On Mar 16, 2005, at 6:09 AM, michel wrote:
2300c 9.1 or 8.5.
You guys got there an interesting discussion. As I happen to own two of
these machines and on both of them a different OS (and I let you guess
which
ones). I was curious to see what are the differences as I far as I can
see.
The only thing I must admit is the fact that the 9.1 machine has 48 mb
of
ram and a 10 gig 4200 rpm HD wheras the 8.5 machine must do with only
28 mb
ram the standard harddisk of 750 mb.
There is no doubt for me that the 9.1 is much faster.(but I remember
when
not having 48mb it was much slower. When opening system profiler on
both
machines at the same time, 9.1 is twice as fast as 8.5.
Everything(opening windows, scrolling etc.) looks more crispy and
faster on
the 9.1. And sure it is the ram and hd also,
but Dan suggestion was to configure like my machine. And then the
result is
there.
I know you critics will say , yes but you have more ram. True , but
the 9.1
machine has also an 8.5 sytem on another partition, So I rebooted 9.1
into
8.5.
to see what happened.
And frankly I must say I donĀ¹t see much difference between 9.1 and 8.6
on
the same machine. If anybody knows a good bench I am willing to do
some
more tests.
As for my opinion, if one upgrades to the maximum ram and a faster
disk ,9.1
is really workable, unless you want to run heavy photoshop etc. The
avantage
of 9.1 is the more advanced system, and applications that demand a
minimum
of 9.1 can run then.

Re: 2300c Question

2005-03-13 Thread Daniel Palka
Oh my goodness I highly highly highly dis-recommend installing OS 9.1
on a Duo 2300c. At most install 8.6. I would probably stick to 8.1.
OS 9 offers little feature benefits to anybody running a Duo to make up
for the massive extreme horrendous slow down, hogging of hard drive
space, and 24mb of RAM (with Virtual Memory turned on - even more
slowness!) that it takes up. And don't even think about using the
modem with OS 9 - the internal modem on Duos slows the machine down by
some ridiculous number like 50%. That's barely acceptable with System
7, much less OS 9.

You have to get yourself out of the "newer is always better" syndrome -
for it is very untrue. Especially on a Duo 2300. OS 9.1 yikes!

Just a word of warning. Either way you have to get an external
CD-ROM, and for that you need either a dock or the crazy Duo - SCSI
microdock. Or a minidock.

Re: Best OS for Wallstreet 233

2004-11-18 Thread Daniel Palka
I find Windows 95 to run slow on my Dell 386. But it still doesn't
even compare to running OSX on a PowerBook 3400c.

A more reasonable comparison is running Windows XP on a 386.

running Windows 95 on a 386DX-40, for those of you with experience
with the x86 world.

Yeah, that's the problem alright.
Who is your target audience? If it's users of System 7 - OS 9, then
you want to use either Sorenson or Cinepak instead of MPEG4. MPEG4 is
pretty processor intensive, and most people running those systems
don't have the horsepower for MPEG4 (or OS X, for that matter).
Yes I will most likely re do the videos. After all, I'll want to watch
them on my own Duo!

If you read the legal terms page I try and attempt to calm all
parties involved. It is linked at the bottom.
Good luck with that! ;-)
Thanks. I'm pretty sure I'll need it.

Be prepared to be slapped by Apple for copyright infringement, though.
Those commercials are Apple copyrighted material, and "PowerBook DUO"
is a registered trademark, IIRC. You probably won't get to keep that
domain for long.
LOL. We'll see what happens...
I got the commercials from theapplecollection.com by the way, only I
edited them in Final Cut Pro to better suit my needs.

If you read the legal terms page I try and attempt to calm all parties
involved. It is linked at the bottom.

I'm rather proud of my recreation of the PowerBookDUO logo. That was
done by me eyeballing the end of the commercials.

What compressor did you use for the commercials? They don't play
right on both of the Macs I've tried it on so far. I've got QT 5 on
one and QT 6 on the other...
I think you need the latest version of QT6 to play them right. I
exprted them in Final Cut Pro using quicktime conversion for DSL/Cable
Medium Quality. I think its MPEG4.

It plays good on both my G4s running OSX so I'm assuming a simple
update to QT6 will fix that, although I'm not so sure about Classic.

Peace,
Drew

Well actually, I did find that. I just thought it a little
unprofessional and rather ugly, and unsuited to my tastes is all.
Respect to whoever made that site though, it is very informative.

But it contains broken links, weird colors and lots of web design no-no
stuff :)

And no interesting graphics!
Thanks for pointing that out though!

PowerBook Duo Web Site

2004-11-16 Thread Daniel Palka
I'm working on a web site devoted to the PowerBook Duo, after having
failed to find any such thing.

It is conveniently located at http://www.powerbookduo.com/ which is
amazing that URL was available.

A fully functional public forum as well as a television commercial
gallery are already up. More to come!

Give me your thoughts / ideas / input / comments about anything. I
really want to eventually make this the de-facto Duo resource on the
internet.

Re: 3400 won't shut down with 9.2.2

My thought is that lots of problems of similar annoying-ness to this
one will appear since you installed an unsupported operating system
onto your 3400c. Go back to 9.1.

Hi, just got his PB and the above problem appears. I searched the

freezes at the desktop, the cursor moves but the dropdowns don't work.
If I force quit and re-boot to the desktop, I can shut down. Any
thoughts on this? Thanks, Dennis

You need minimum Mac OS 7.5.2 with OpenTransport and the drivers linked
below for your convenience:

Download that and install, and bingo you have wireless.
