Cool! I'll look for the hack's 'how-to' online :)

I installed 8.1 over 7.5.3 on a friend's 2300c/20/1G along with the Express
Modem software, and she's tried accessing her T-1 at work using her UltraDoc's
ethernet port. Everything works fine, except her ethernet (I even copied over
a the existing UltraDoc inits/she bought it w/no install disks. A co-worker's
3400c's built-in ethernet works fine (OS9) on the network.

Any ideas (maybe OS9) or links (for UltraDoc software or specific init/s).
Thanks! Craig

What can I do to speed this thing up without throwing a lot of money

Also for working with Office 98.

Hi Kevin,

These powerbooks will actually run from System 7.1.x to OS 8.1. The system
you're running now, 8.0 suffers from bugs fixed in 8.1, so firstly backup your
drive and update your OS to 8.1 (the Office 98 CD has this updates and other OS
updates included). If you have access to a removable boot-up source, hard
drive, zip drive or the like, you may want to try 7.5.3 or 7.1.x with all of th
eir updates to see if you like their speed increase (if you need links for more
on this, email me).

7.1.x, 7.5.3 and 8.1 are all nice and have their pros and cons. For OS 8.1,
what you will benefit most from is as much ram as can be installed on it. Then,
if it's possible and reasonable to do so, a bigger and faster hard drive is a
great booster. These two will assist in the speedup your looking for. Also
ensure that you have Appletalk off if your not on a network, it wastes extra ram
space and can slow things down down. Extra extensions and installed fonts can
also slow things up.

As far as browsers, the most up-to-date browser for this powerbook is iCab
and disabling images will definitely speed it up. Opera is yet to deliver it's
non-PowerPC version, so don't hold your breath on it. Other browser tricks
include setting up a ram disk and telling your browser to use it as it's web
cache. I'm not sure if this powerbook could be installed more ram than the OS can
use and have a 3rd party ram disk application use that as a ram disk ...

Lastly, Microsoft's last version of Office that run on this powerbook is
4.2.1; 98 is PowerPC-only. Fortunately, they do have downloadable updates to
import newer Word and Excel files (I only use Word on my older Macs, so I only know
those updates). You can even use these updates on Word 5, which is faster on
the 520, and has less fancy features.

Hope that helps!
Craig

8.1 USB options .. thanks guys!

2003-02-10 Thread JMCnetwork
I often wondered about 8.1's potential in early PowerMacs and even '040's. I
suppose no '040 desktops could do USB :)

The 6500's use of USB with 8.1 is truly refreshing. I have a friend that has
a 6400 with 8.5.1, Ill definitely let him know about that option. Thanks for
the insight, Scott!

Someone I know wanted to trade his 3400 for my 1400. It's not a kanga, but if
the 3400 has a cardbus, this would offer potential USB possibilities. Thanks
for the observation, Drew.

USB peripheral options on OS 8.1

2003-02-07 Thread JMCnetwork
I remember the first iMacs shipped with 8.1, so some USB devices, like
Apple's keyboards and mice definitely work. Anyone know or use other USB
devices, like printers, scanners, etc?

I want to see about downgrading a 1400c from 8.5.1 for speed and adding a USB
PCMCIA card to it to say, use a newer USB printer with it.

Thanks for any tips, links or ideas on this, everyone!

Re: 2300c modem specs and Apple Telecom Software

2003-02-05 Thread JMCnetwork
... I did forget to mention in my initial post that the Duo's modem is the
Apple Express 14kbps internal modem.

BTW, OS 8.1 seems to be as responsive as 7.5.3 if not more; just wish the
modem had more speed, too. :)

Apple Telecom software on a Duo 2300c running OS 8.1

2003-02-04 Thread JMCnetwork
Anyone successful using Apple Telecom software version 3.1.3 phone answering
portion in OS 8.1?

I'm configuring a Duo 2300c with a 14kbps modem for a friend who has AOL and
wants to run 5.0. While I'm asking, anyone have a way of speeding up the
modem any, i.e., 28kbps speed, modem scripts, disabling any feature or
extension, 3rd-party software, browser versions, etc. Finally, is OS 8.1
ideal on this Duo; it had 7.5.3 before.

Many thanks in advance! Off-line emails welcomed and if this topic was
covered before, then forwarding any topic emails would be more than perfect,
too! :-)

3400 CD-ROM

2002-12-10 Thread JMCnetwork
I recently got a 3400/OS9 without CD, and I've seen some 6-12x CD modules for
$50-100. Anyone know if these CD-ROM prices are about as good as it gets, or
should I maybe invest in a CD burner (I think I spotted some EIDE internal
drives for $20-$30). Although I may need a SCSI burner now that I think about
it, unless I also get a USB or Firewire PCMCIA card and external USB or
Firewire case for the EIDE's as well ... any ideas?

OS considerations for newly acquired 1400c

2002-09-21 Thread JMCnetwork

I recently acquired my first color powerbook: 1400c/133/64/1G/8.5.1. Any
favorites or benefits in compatibility, speed and/or ram upgrading to 8.6 (a
consultant I spoke with preferred 8.5.1 and 9.1+ due to less software bugs
than 8.6) or maybe taking it down to 8.1?

I run Photoshop6, AOL5 w/GV 56k card (have an uninstalled Linksys Combo
Ethernet card model EC2T for when I look into DSL shortly), Opera5,
Netscape4.79, BBedit Lt6, Word98 (but have 2001), FMP4, Acrobat4, some
emulated game favorites, inits, tools and other minor apps (with 8.1, I'd
loose my dock and appearance themes and sounds; with 8.6 or 9.1 I'd get
itunes). Am I good to stay put?

Thanks for any insight!
Craig
