Re: ethernet

2005-02-23 Thread Jack Countryman
Both ethernet cables have the rj45 ends that look like larger phone plugs.

The difference is in how they are wired (remember the difference between a
'printer' and 'modem' or 'null-modem' cables on the earlier macs?).

If you hold up the ends of the cables in front of you, patch cords (straight
through) will have the wire colors in the same order in both plugs.
Cross-over cables will be different from one plug to the other in a specific
pattern that I'd have to look up.

The common cables you find are patch cords. Use a hub or switch to link
two. Be sure to set Appletalk, network, TCPIP, (which are present depends
on your system version) all to use ethernet, as well as setting ethernet to
use the built-in port.

PB 1400 screen gone bad?

2005-01-26 Thread Jack Countryman
I've used a PowerBook 1400cs at work for some time to run old programs that
OS X classic doesn't like. When I fired it up Tuesday, it shows a funny
patterned screen that is visible even when the power is off. Since this
powerbook often rides in the back of the vehicle, sitting out overnight in
freezing weather, its possible that the screen has died somehow related to
temperature (though I've done the same with a half dozen other powerbooks
over the years with only some fading at the corners of the screen).

Or is there some other issue with these?

I see a 1400c screen on eBay...will it substitute for the cs screen or are
there other hardware differences in the cpu?

Thanks in advance...

Will PB 150 top plastics work on PB 170?

2004-09-12 Thread Jack Countryman
I've got a PB 170 here that has been dropped a few times, and so has breaks
in the plastic around the keyboard, bottom of screen hinges, etc. I also
have a PB 150 here that seemingly has a dead board...no chime, nada. So,
can I make a 'frankenbook' by putting the 150 screen and top case half onto
the 170 bottom case half/motherboard, etc.?

PowerBook 520

2004-08-27 Thread Jack Countryman
I'm playing with a PowerBook 520. Its a stock configuration...with only 4
meg of ram. I was going to try to get it on my home network to access the
web using ethernet and DHCP...but evidently it needs more ram to let me
install system 7.6 to get the OT/PT, TCIP, etc. it needs. Or can I somehow
(TomeViewer?) pull those from the 7.6 cd and install them into 7.5? Any
idea what sort of ram card these use, or how to identify one? (I've got a
box of miscellaneous ram here...could I be so lucky as to have one that
would work?! Without risking frying the powerbook, how do I identify the
right ram module?) Thanks in advance for any ideas...

PowerBook 170 modem

2004-07-09 Thread Jack Countryman
The PowerBook 170 I'm playing with also has an internal modem. Any idea
what software was needed to get those to work? I vaguely recall something
about an 'Express' Modem that needed additional software...but am not sure
anymore what that was, if there were other types of modems in these, or
where to even look. What software was needed to add PPP or whatever to
those old systems (I think this had 7.01 or maybe 7.1 originally?) to get
the modem to work? Thanks in advance.

PB 170 with DB-15 on top of hinge

2004-07-09 Thread Jack Countryman
I've got that PowerBook 170 here open now. It has a DB-15 connector on the
top of the left screen hinge. I couldn't get anything to work there, so I
opened the PowerBook up to see what that was hooked to. There is a 3.5 or
so inch square board in there sandwiched between the processor and memory
card, hooked to the main board via the memory slot. The wires from the
DB-15 come down to a connector that looks to have been soldered to that
board, though they are how hanging loose, having broken away from where they
apparently should be soldered to that board.

The board has no name on it that I can see...so I have no idea where to go
looking for information on who made it or what it was supposed to do (second
monitor? Ethernet?). It does have notations on it a couple of places
about ram, and it is adding 2 meg of ram to the computer (6 meg total
showing in 'about this Macintosh' instead of 4 that shows up without that
board), so I guess leaving it in as a ram card is workable. I confess, I'm
still intrigued as to what else it was supposed to do, though.

All information/ideas appreciated Since the DB-15 connector was used
for both monitors and ethernet in those days, and since monitors might use
more than six wires/connectors, would this more likely be ethernet than
video? Or does the extra ram imply video? Ideas on how to identify the
board, and find the software driver that would presumably be needed to get
it to work...especially if it is ethernet which would not have been part of
a normal system software install for a powerbook in those days).

I can take and send pictures of the extra board to folks if anyone is
interested or has ideas on how to identify it or get it to work. Thanks.

DB 15 connector on left hinge of PB 170?

2004-07-08 Thread Jack Countryman
I've got a PowerBook 170 here that I was given. I have it running, but am
puzzled by an extra connector on the top of the left screen hinge. Where
there would normally be a rounded piece of plastic to form the top of the
end of the hinge, this has a DB-15 female connector...like those used for
Apple monitors on their cpus, or on some older ethernet cards that points
out to the left side of the case.

Since this had no software etc. with it (we transplanted a hard drive in
from another powerbook to get it going) we have no idea what that connector
is supposed to be or do. I've tried a few Apple monitors...13 to 15
inch...and get nothing. So its evidently not a video out/monitor connection
unless it needs software to turn it on?

That seems to leave ethernet? Is anyone familiar with any add-ons for old
powerbooks that put such a connector there? If so, how do I get it to work?
What software is needed? What system version does it take?

All ideas welcome. Thanks in advance.

Wallstreet with no power

2004-06-25 Thread Jack Countryman
A friend bought a used Wallstreet. It was running when she showed it to
him. Since then, it won't start. For a while it seemed to be in perpetual
sleep mode, but eventually stopped that and now is totally dead. The pram
battery tests good, and even with my fully charged main battery, and any of
several power supplies, it does nothing. Resets do nothing. Is this likely
the power/sound board, the pmu, or what? Ways to find out, other than
swapping in one board at a time? Anyone have schematics, or test procedures
for these? Thanks.

Wallstreet won't boot....why?

2004-03-04 Thread Jack Countryman
I've had a wallstreet powerbook given to me. It will not boot. We think we
have the power plug socket solder connections good again, but still no boot,
even on wall power and with the main battery fully charged up (done in a
different powerbook overnight). At this point, we suspect the pram battery
may be weak...but what voltage/amperage is it supposed to be putting out?
(If we knew that we could try jury rigging some other battery pack to at
least get things started?) Or is there some other part that usually fails
on these that we should try first? Thanks.

G3 series 233/12in dead...how to resuscitate?

2004-02-11 Thread Jack Countryman
I've had a bottom of the line G3 series Wallstreet given to me. I helped
get it to boot some time back and pulled data off of it...so I know it had a
dead pram battery then. I eventually got it to boot by leaving it plugged
in...but this time its set over night and still nothing. Ideas on ways to
get it going since I don't have other batteries for it? Thanks.

Strange messages on screen at boot

2003-12-22 Thread Jack Countryman
I've been playing with an original G3/250 "Kanga" Powerbook lately. Its now
developed a behavior I've not seen before. At startup, I get several lines
of repeating text across the screen saying:

can't open ata1/@08 can't open ata1/@08 can't open ata1/@08 can't open
ata1/@08 can't open ata1/@08 can't open ata1/@08can't open ata1/@08

This repeats about a half dozen lines of black print across a grey screen,
then the screen changes to the usual color, shows the happy mac and goes
ahead with its boot process. I find that if I hold the 'Option' key at
startup, these message lines do not appear.

I'm not sure where those messages come from, or why they are now appearing,
or how I stop or turn them off? Ideas? Is this an Open Firmware message of
some sort? Or something else?

Re: ethernet or wireless on 1400cs/133 with OS 7.6.1?

2003-12-21 Thread Jack Countryman
After getting airport working on my original PowerBook G3/233 (Kanga) using
a Waveland card, I'm now wondering if I could do either the same thing, or
get an ethernet card working to give ethernet network access, on the
1400cs/133 at work to get it to print to the network printers there. So
far, the cards for either wireless or ethernet that I seem to find want
newer systems (typically 8.6 or 9). I'm not clear on what is in those
systems that is critical to getting these cards to work, or why it could not
be done with 7.6.1. (I need to keep that particular machine at 7.6.1 to
keep an old program running...that program has never been updated and
seemingly will not be updated on the mac, it won't work correctly with 8 or
newer due to changes in the way those system do interrupt signals.)

Ideas of either ethernet or wireless cards that would work with 7.6.1? Or
how to force an older system to recognize/work with a card intended for a
newer system? Thanks in advance.

Usb ports?

2002-12-31 Thread Jack Countryman
What was the oldest/first model(s) of powerbook to use usb ports? Any
before the G4 powerbooks?

I've got a local mac user (G3 upgraded 6100) who got a digital camera that
transfers via a usb cable. We're trying to find the least expensive
solution to get it working with her mac(s) since neither her PowerBook 540c
or the 6100 have usb. I think the early iBooks had usb...did any of the
Wallstreet or Pismo PowerBooks, or 1400, 2400, 3400, etc. have usb?

Other ideas? Thanks in advance...

PowerBook 150 color capable screen?

2002-10-01 Thread Jack Countryman

I was tinkering with a PowerBook 150 yesterday. I thought these were
monochrome screens, and indeed the monitors control panel in the installed
system 7.1.1 doesn't seem to have a color setting for the screen that works.
BUT, the border of the screen, outside the system/program window was a
medium blue color! This suggests the screen hardware CAN do color, if the
rest of the system gives it the right signals? Has anyone found out how to
get these screens to do color? System software upgrade? Other added
drivers? 'Wish I Were' to make it think its a 165c or 180c? Thanks in
advance for any help/ideas...

How to change classic application printer in OS X?

2002-03-19 Thread Jack Countryman

I'm now using a new iBook at work. While its a bit of a hassle to
find/capture/choose printers at each new location (four different buildings
on a regular basis), this does not seem to affect the printer that 'classic'
applications want to use. They are still looking for the first printer I
set up, on the first day of use...even if its in a different building and
not available on the building net in the other four buildings. I don't find
any way to choose a new printer for the 'classic' applications. Has anyone
figured out how to make this work? What's the equivalent of the old
'Chooser' in the new 'classic' part of the system? Thanks in advance.

Here it is, from last April. I haven't done it yet, but soon!
While the suggestion to use a newer version of Netscape works, for some of
us its not good, as the newer versions run really slowly on our older macs.
The other solution is to just update the expired security certificate. See
this (I forget where I found it...newsgroup?)...but it got my ver 3.04 going
again... Your mileage may vary, I'm not associated with anyone involved,
etc.
