PB145 best OS?

2002-09-23 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I have a PowerBook 145/2MB/40MB running OS 7.0.1

What is the best OS for this model? Can I upgrade to 7.5.5 or even to
7.6.1?

Anyone have any ideas for the best way to utilize this model?

Thanks,

joseph

Re: localtalk and phone lines?

2002-08-19 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Which is a pain, if you happen to have (like I do) a phonenet connecter that
is hardwired to the 2 inner sets of wires. DOH! must be ancient.

However, Radio Shack (grimice) or your trusty electronics store sells a tool
that allows you to rewire the connecter on a phone line. By putting a new
end on and turning a standard line into the PhoneNet line you need.

That item should solve many problems.

Re: visor to pb 1400

2002-08-02 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Also, most of the visor connectors are for both Mac and PC and come with a
serial adapter that works great. I got lucky with a visor cradle that came
with the adapter, and I use it with a sync CABLE, low profile, that I got
off of ebay on my 5300.

The cradle sits with my desktop where it belongs.

Re: 5300 woes

2002-06-27 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Thanks Brian, you made me realize I had left out some vital info...

I have a PC card running on the desktop, an old 133mhz Pentium II card,
Radius I believe. It requires a version of PC Exchange to be installed
along with File Exchange. This setup worked fine for months until recently.
The only recent event is trying to install some NONAME USB IDE enclosure on
the desktop. As soon as I tried to use the manufaturers drivers I started
having these problems.

Again, it seems to affect the CD ROM and Compact Flash (USB) as well. The
same problems appeared on the laptop immediately after a file transfer using
SCSI docking.

And now my system locks up on the 5300 is pretty much useless when it comes
to PC floppy disks, PC zip disks and PC CD ROMs, and occassionaly with a MAC
media.

Even a bare bones system with only File exchange results in the same issues.

UGGH.

Re: 5300 woes

2002-06-27 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I have a problem that has imerged on my 5300ce/117/32/6G/8.6 AND my
PM6500/225/128/20G/USB/8.6

If I put in any PC floppy, it locks up, often even with MAC formatted disks.

I even did a reinstall of the OS, clean, and the problem went away for about
2 restarts and then re-emerged! Also, they both lock up if I try to format
a floppy as a PC floppy.

The same symptoms arise if I insert Compact Flash cards, or PC style CD ROMS
(desktop).

I suspect this may be virus based, as I the symptoms manifested themselves
on the desktop prior to connecting them via SCSI docking.

Any hints, suggestions or solutions will be welcomed with big open arms.

Thanks listas,

Re: EIDE in PB 5300cs?

2002-06-26 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Just put the drive into a system, like a Wallstreet, that will allow you to
partition it using Drive Setup. So a 10G drive could become 2-5G drives, or
perhaps stay under the 4G limit on SCSI docking. So a 20G drive could
become 5 - 4G drives and you would be able to SCSI dock all parts of the
drive on your desktop.

I did this on my desktop with a 3.5" 20G drive, it affords the benefit of
when one partition goes bad you do not loose the entire drive. You simply
reformat the bad partition and drive, no pun, on.

good luck,

joseph

Re: Using a CF card to boot a PB 5300cs?

2002-05-28 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I was able to create a boot disk on a 16mb CF card, though I did "CHEAT". I
used the system off of a MacOS 8.1 Disk Tools, which is a great way to
create a small and fast starting emergency boot disk.

I think I was able to create a bootable CF using a minimal 8.5 install,
can't remember for certain.

I've been attempting to configure a compact flash card as an emergency boot
and repair disk for my 5300cs.

I can successfully install the OS (8.1 in this case) and various utilities
(incl. Norton, Disk Warrior).

When I try to boot from the card, I first get the start of the boot
sequence and the smiling MacOS screen and progress bar. I then get a bomb
with a "bus error" and am told to boot with extensions off. Doing so
results with another "bus error."

FWIW, ejecting the CF card during the restart allows successfull booting
from the main HD.

What am I missing? Or is this something that just cannot be done?

(I've checked the Maclaunch archives of this list, for what that's worth -
it seems they only keep the last month of postings. Nothing there, or from
a Google search, about using a CF card with a powerbook 5300.)

I eagerly await all reasonable replies. Thanks.

pb5300 and Compact Flash

2002-05-20 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I have a PB5300ce running MacOS 8.6 and am having a heck of a time getting
my Digital Camera, Desktop and Powerbook to share a common formating of the
compact flash media.

PB:
5300ce/8.6/Ram2x/PCMCIA card reader

Digital Camera:
HP618/32mb CF

Desktop:
PowerMac 6500/8.6/MicroTech USB CF Card reader

I have formated the card on all 3 devices and each time one of them
"objects" to the formating, Dos or Mac. I think I have tried all variants
of formating available to me.

If I format it in the camera, the powerbook cannot read it.

If I format it "DOS" in the desktop the powerbook cannot read it.

If I format it "DOS" in the powerbook the camera cannot read it.

If I format it "Mac" in the powerbook the desktop cannot read it.

More often then not it just HANGS or crashes my powerbook, if the formating
is not correct.

Obviously the goal here, is to have one common formating that all three
devices can share. Please assist fellow listers

Sharing a TCP connection

What are the TCP/IP settings on the 5300 to get it to utilize the same
internet connection when the 6500 is online?

Do I need static IP addresses on one or both machines?

Re: How can I speed up my 5300?

2002-05-15 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I love SD8 on my pb5300ce, really adds some time saving functionality in
terms of shortcuts to commonly used apps.

I tried to install SD9 and it locked up the computer, under OS8.6, so either
it won't work on this model or must have OS9 installed.

Oh yeah, and I love my RamDoubler 8, really extends the use of this machine
that caps out at 64mb. I have only 32, but 2x to 80 really gets the job
done.

pb5300 networking

2002-05-13 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I would like to be able to network my PB5300ce with my PowerMac 6500, both
running OS 8.6.

AND

Be able to use the modem connection on the 6500 to surf the net through the
network. Is this only possible via ethernet? Or can it be done via
AppleTalk as well? Either way, what are the critical TCP/IP settings at each
machine?

I currently have the 5300 networked via AppleTalk and the 6500 online via
the modem with the 5300 AppleTalk set to AppleTalk and the 6500 set to
Remote Only.

Re: 3400 HD

2002-05-07 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Which can be a challenge. I first put the screws on the top and they got in
the way of the palm/trackpad assembly. Then on the sides where one of them
gets in the way of the center edge near the space bar, there I just removed
some of the casing on the palm/trackpad assembly as it does not show on the
top. So if you have to modify your hard drive casing inside the 5300, I
recommend the sides, drill the holes and then remove the plastic where it
conflicts.

Also you will have to make holes in the copper shielding for 2 of the screws
on the side or top.

Good luck.

Re: HD for 5300

I have seen some "Cooling" HD fans on ebay for the 3400. Is it possible, or
neccessary, to get one of these into my 5300ce?

I had a desktop HD freeze up because it was in an external enclosure with no

heat that I can feel over the HD when in use.

I have a pb5300ce/OS 8.6/6 gig with Ram Doubler installed.

Re: portable printer suggestion?

I can recommend the HP310 or 340, heavy but useful and durable. Can be run
off of a NiCd battery and are readily available on ebay:

Here is a good search path:

Good luck.

palm IR with 5300

2002-04-29 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Is it possible to Hotsync a handheld with the IR port on the 5300?

I am using a HandSpring Visor Deluxe (Palm 3.1v) and a PB5300ce (MacOS 8.6).

When I try to setup the Palm Desktop software on the 'book, I am unable to
select the IRport for syncing. I do have IR appletalk setup and it works
well between 5300s, so well I am confused as to why MAC stopped using this
technology.

Is it that the AppleTalk setup is keeping the Palm software from using that
port?

Or is it just not really possible?

Thanks,

joseph

Re: PC IDE drive in a 5300

2002-04-19 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

> Not initialize, what you want to do is go into the options that let you
> re-partition the drive into a single Mac partition.

That does not work, even with 1 Partition selected, the 5mb Unallocated
Partition is still there. But, again trying to initialize it just fails.

I did manage to "unlock" this segment with the Customize Volume option,
which removed the Mac wanting to erase the disk when mounting it. So I
thought all was good.

I then did a MacOS 8.5 install from CD (running on a slim OS from a 16mb
Compact Flash card and my PowerCD), everything seem to go just fine, I was
even able to drop a disk image of the 8.5 CD on there for later.

However, after selecting the disk as "Startup Disk" and rebooting, I was
back to square one: An error saying their is a Bus error and to restart
with extensions off, which then produces the same error. So my guess is
that this 5mb partition is getting in the way of the Mac using the disk as a
startup volume.

Help, again.

But that is the rub, it won't let me initialize that partition. Always
fails.

PC IDE drive in a 5300

2002-04-18 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I am running into minor difficulties putting a PC (IBM/COMPAQ) ide drive
into my PowerBook 5300.

Are there any special conditions that apply? Such as jumpers? It is
factory set to Master now, but there is the ability to jumper it to Slave,
Cable selection, and Reserved Master. None of which seem to work as well as
master.

I am getting several odd clicks, beeps, and crashes. Apples Drive Setup
1.7.3 is what I have used to initialize it, but even with that there is a
5mb portion that is "Locked" and cannot be initialized. Now that it has
been initialized when I boot up the Mac wants to initialize that 5mb disk,
but cannot because it it locked.

Help.

5300 and CD

2002-04-15 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Even better for looks, is the original PowerCD. Plus it runs on batteries.

I have one of these on my pb5300ce and it works great, except that it is not
capable of booting a mac from CD. Has to do with the ROMs I think. I
solved this by booting of a compact flash card which then loads the CD for
me.

I got lucky and got mine off of ebay for $10.

Re: Help

2002-04-08 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I remember that these items came on upgraded/refurbished 500 series
computers in order to get larger (and cheaper) IDE drives in them. As I
recall, they were very hard to get unless it came with a hard drive.

I too, would love to get one of these and put a 2gig IDE in my 520c to
replace the paltry 320mb SCSI drive in there now. So if anyone knows of a
source please let us know.

Thanks,

Re: USB?

2002-04-03 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I have the $15 version of the Compact Flash/PCMCIA adaptor from Radio Shack
(of all places) and it works great, both on my PB5300ce and the (dare I say
it) Compac PC laptop at work.

Plus you can use it as a startup disk on your 5300, which so far as I can
tell, eliminates from use as a Camera card unless you reformat it.

I would love to hear if anyone found a way to use the CF as a Mac volume AND
as a camera storage card interchangeably. Any takers out there?

Re: flash memory

2002-03-27 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I think the key is to have PC file exchange turned off or not present. Then
the Mac cannot read the MS dos disk and will automatically ask to reformat
the disk or eject it.

I accomplished this, by accident, by booting off of an OS 8 floppy, Disk
Tools, and then inserting the CF card in my pb5300.

It reformats and then I just dropped the same system on it that was on the
floppy, I plan on getting a larger one and trying to do a full OS 8.6
install. Right now I am playing with a 16mb card and the Disk Tools system
is only 4mb large. Had to keep the 32mb for use on the digital camera.

I did notice that once I put the system folder on the disk, my HP digital
camera could no longer use the card, or even recognize it. Sobeware.

g'luck,

joseph

Re: flash memory

2002-03-26 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I popped it in the 5300 and it reformated the card, even though my PowerMac
6500 had already done so. I am guessing that is the age difference between
the machines.

In fact I have not done it elegantly, I cheated. I simply copied an OS 8.1
startup floppy system folder. So it is using a Disk Enabler to boot up, you
get a funny message during startup about this, then I borrowed a few 8.6
control panels and extensions to make it more useful. Right now it is about
17mb on a 32mb disk and runs great.

Works for me so far.

Re: flash memory

I currently have a PB5300 booting up with a measely 32MB compact flash card
and it is slick.

Boots up right away and runs really smooth.

Anyone else have experience with this method? Are there any drawbacks to
doing this, I know read/write cycles on the disk could be an issue.

Thanks,

Wow,

T'hanks for all the input fellow listers, I really appreciate it. I found

Now I just have to decide if I want to bother with OS 9 or do it all under

I have a PB5300ce/117mhz/2G/32mb, though I might be willing to upgrade the

PB5300 and Kanji items

2002-03-21 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

Hello fellow listers, heres a trivia question for the die hards out there.

I am getting a Japanese/English Keyboard for my Powerbook 5300 so that my 5
year old can further his love of foreign languages, oh yeah and because it
is COOL.

I need to find the resources that allow a Mac to use and perhaps run in
Japanese.

If I remember correctly their is a Kanji Keyboard setting and Font, also I
am sure there is a Japanese version of the MacOS as well.

Any help, info and pointers to resources is appreciated.

Thanks,

joseph

Re: what to buy

2002-03-19 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

If you want to stay under $500 then the following would work.

1. PB 1400 - G3 upgradeable as well. A bit lightweight and flimsy in some
physical areas but a great machine and quite capable.

2. PB 3400 - No G3 but it is a powerhouse, many expansion options availabe,
durable and great for graphics and CADD work, weighs a lot though.

Hope that helps.

I found that you could just use those older Apple PC Card extensions
directly from a previous OS version without problems. So just find them in
a 7.5.3 or 7.6 install and transfer them over to the 8.1(?) folder.

Re: Digital camera and PB540

You could try an obscure app out there, not sure where (sorry), called
"Reset Serial Port", it is very useful on the PB500 series where you have
only the one port and you want to use several items there.

You are not using a serial port splitter are you? Many of those are missing
a pin that is used in items like a digital camera. I could not use a
splitter with my GS connectix camera years back.

Ok, here goes:

PCMCIA card cage, even rev. A or B since I may never upgrade it to PPC
A 33.6 or greater PC card modem (currently no modem)
Compact Flash PC card adaptor

A second battery
A Lind dual battery charger

A 32mb ram upgrade card (currently 12mb)

A PPC upgrade card, why not dream HUH?
Then I would need:
A rev. C cage
A 500mb or larger hard drive (currently 240mb)

Thanks for listening.

Re: Connecting Duo 230 to Powermac 7100

2001-09-19 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I just went through this last nite with my PB520c (OS 8.1) and my PowerMac
6500 (OS 8.6) and there are a couple of things you need to get right.

First, AppleTalk on both machines must be set to "Modem/Printer", neither
can be set to "Remote Only".

Along with turning on File Sharing for the shared computer or both. On Mac
OS 8.5 and higher sharing preferences for each drive can be set at the
"cmd-Info" option. But in lower OSs you must highlight the drive and then
choose "Sharing" from the file menu.

Then in the control panel Users & Groups, you must create users with
passwords for logging into the respective machines.

Hope this helps.

Tonite I plan on doing the same with my PB100 (OS 7.1) and the PowerMac,
just because I can. I am such a nerd.

Re: Which PB? 1400 or 3400?

2001-08-27 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I would strongly reccomend the 3400. I used to own a 1400 and was
disappointed really with it. However while in college my buddies 3400/200
easily outpaced my PowerMac 6500/225 on many operations, I of course was
green with envy. The 3400 is proven, solid and dependable. $500 for one
seems like a steal.

Hope this helps.

Re: PowerBook 500 w/PPC Special Interest Group

2001-08-21 Thread Joseph C. Sis, JR.

I too would be interested in this topic. Let the group know where this
goes.

Does anyone have a link to the info about someone in Japan getting a G3 into
his PB540? I found a vague reference to this on a PB500 page the other day.

Thanks.
