 with os 8.0.

In March of this year I asked that same question and was answered by
this mailing group so I am happy to pass on the solution that worked for me.

I have a Powerbook 3400c/240 using OS 8.1 and did not want to upgrade
because everything except the browser (Netscape Communicator 4.79) was
working fine.

I was advised to download iCab and I did so.

What a relief. It copes with most web pages.

Netscape Archived Client Products

Some odd pages will still freeze the pages but that is life until you
can catch up with current web design.

Good luck and enjoy your Powerbook 1400cs as long as you can.

Re Removal from list

2004-02-04 Thread MMB
Lily:

I have found that as well as sending an unsubscribe message to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] I have to do one more thing.

When the reply comes asking you to confirm, DO NOT hit the reply button.

Instead, copy and paste the reply address into TO line. In the subject
line make sure you quote the number they send you and then send.

I don't understand why but this stops your email bouncing.

Good luck

Java and Javascript on 3400c

2002-06-15 Thread MMB

Hi

I have a Powerbook 3400c/250 using MacOS 8.1 quite happily. I have also
been using Netscape Communicator 4.78 quite happily until recently when
I started encountering Java or Javascript problems on some sites,
including those I had quite happily accessed previously. [I enabled all
images, Java and Javascript in preferences so it is not that.]

For example, on
http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/archivesvictoria/t1tbmain.asp I could not
see the left hand frame where one can log in to do research.

I get the message about Javscript error in the scroll box at bottom.

Another site I had previously accessed for years is a Java-operated chat
site on the Virtual University: www.vu.org/chatcafe/chatnow

The message there is Applet cr cannot load.

So I reluctantly upgraded to Netscape Communicator 4.79. I had to go to
the ftp site to download Smartupdate as I encountered the same
Javascript error on their Smartupdate website.

I can usually find my way around most browser difficulties but this one
problem persists.

Is there some added Java software I need? or Javascript software? Or both?

Has anyone any ideas, please?

Talksender?

2002-05-06 Thread MMB

I have just heard about a little program called Talksender - freeware -
http://www.talksender.com which enables one to send a 60 second
voicemail with an e-mail message.

I have read the blurb on that page about it and it seems harmless
enough.

However, I am cautious since it attaches itself to one's email software.
I can't find info on its system requirements altho there is a heap of
help available on the home page.

Has anyone on this list used Talksender?

I don't want it to interfere with the operation of system 8.1 on my
Powerbook 3400c or Netscape COmmunicator which uses Messeger for e-mail.

BIOS? and Mac?

2002-05-02 Thread MMB

Hi:

I know that some members of this list are also familiar with DOS and
various versions of Windows operating systems. I am presently doing a
computer course which does not take much account of Mac-speak. Mostly I
can translate the terms, but I am stuck on BIOS. What do Mac folk call
the Basic Input/Output System?

My apologies if this betrays how much I need to do that course :-)

Yes, the 3400c is a beautiful machine. I am a cautious/conservative
computer user for I live far from expert help when things go wrong. I
use OS 8.1 without a problem(and have done so for 4 years) and have read
consistently on this list that 8.1 is good on the 3400c. I have 144MB
RAM and advise you to go for as much as you can afford - but I think
144MB is the maximum on this laptop.[Someone who knows both 8.1 and 8.6
on the 3400c might help you choose which of these two is better for your
3400c]

I use the browser Netscape 4.78 and admit it is becoming very slow on
some pages. I disable automatic image loading and that helps. I have not
used iCab but have downloaded it while I listen for comments or problems
in installing etc (told you I was cautious), so I was glad to hear your
comments on that browser.

I use BBEdit Lite 4.6 (freeware on to cope with cleaning up emails and
web pages. Site: http://web.barebones.com/ I also use this for
de-coding mysterious messages like .doc files :-) A later version is
available and promises to work with OS 8.1.

I use Simpletext and Corel WOrdperfect for word processing.

I am happy with this set-up.

Connecting to internet, modem dials, IE can't find it

2002-04-15 Thread MMB

Hi:

Russell Idaho - USA [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

My new 3400 is still causing me a little trouble as I
can't get online to download needed updates (namely OS
8.1) and software.

The internal modem dials up with PPP and connects
fine, but IE 5 (and 4.5 before it)can't seem to find
the connection.

I've checked PPP, TCP/IP, Modem, AppleTalk,and Web
Sharing Control Panels nothing seems to change
anything.

Any ideas?

Russell, here is my reply:

I have been helped so often by folk on this list it is a pleasure to
send my two cents' worth in the hope it helps you.

I too have a PB 3400 using OS 8.1. I use Netscape 4.7 and have no
problem web browsing and downloading etc. So do not despair. We will get
you there.

You will need to contact your ISP for some information on DNS numbers
and proxy settings which are peculiar to them. Then here are a couple
of things to check:

1.PPP

When PPP window is open, pull down on the PPP menu at the top. Select
TCP/IP and click. Mine is set to Connect via PPP server [yours may be
different but your ISP should tell you so] and Configure
via PP server. Then in the window name server address below I have
entered the DNS numbers I received from my ISP.

In the window Search domain I have entered again the domain address of
my ISP which in my case is bigpond.com

OR

2. In IE 4[maybe 4.5 and maybe IE 5 - ask your ISP! for instructions for
the browser you have]

In your browser you may have to set proxy servers.

With IE 4 under VIEW menu choose OPTIONS to set proxy servers.

Click on Connection tab. Select Access the Iternet using a proxy server.

Click on Advanced button

in the Servers and Ports section type in the settings {GET these
settings from your ISP - ask them for the proxy server settings for IE
4.5 or 5 on Mac

Make sure you click Apply and click OK to close the Options window.
You may have to quit your browser and open up again for the options to
take effect.

You will need to get that information on DNS numbers and proxy settings
from your ISP. I do not need to set these with my current ISP but with
other ISP previously I have had to use their proxy settings to get to
web sites.

You may have to do both of these suggestions.

GOod luck.

Hi Cliff:

I receive the digest version so this is probably well and truly answered
by now. However...

I travel a lot and I use Yahoo (find it less full of rules and hassle
than Hotmail) to access the mail on my POP servers back home. That is,
I do not need to change my e-mail address.(you can enter up to three
ISPs :-)

Sign up first of course.

Then when you have logged in, click on Options on LHS of screen and
then under Mail Management select Check other POP mail.
