Re: Installer Wanted for Global Village Modem/Ethernet PC Card

2006-01-10 Thread Manfred

Hello Jim,

the problem is that this would be illeagal. Global village has a
copyright on the software.

There is a support page online at global village. Make a request.
In my case, i needed drivers for my Powerbook 540, the support
there was very helpful and gave me the software. The modem in
the PB540 is OEM although.

 A customer just acquired a PowerBook 1400 with a Model A959 Global
Village 56 Kbps modem and 10Base-T Ethernet adapter PC card. The card
won't work because the correct software hasn't been installed. The
Global Village web site only has updaters, not the OEM installer
software which is required to run the updater (Catch-22). Does anyone
have a copy of the installation disk for this card? Or can you point
me to a source for it on the Internet (I couldn't find one). Or, can
you e-mail me the installer (I've got DSL, so big downloads are no
 problem.) Thanks for your help.

Re: Which flavour of Unix/Linux used most OR run better on older model Powerbooks?

2005-08-25 Thread Manfred
Hello,

Debian works best on the 3400c. Depending on the chipset the
wireless lan works fine. My Lucent card does.
Besides, on a Kanga Yellow Dog works best. But only one
of the older releases.

There is even a software package for powerbooks making all
buttons work (brigthness, loudness) and shows them onscreen
like on MacOS. Battery works longer then with MacOS :)
Sound works fine of course. battery and power status are
recogniced. Works fine. Sleep works, closing lid works.

CD rom works, but on my drive i can not get audio
working. I read somewhere this depends on the drive
you have.

Cause Unix is a 3 button OS, it is possible to map
the missing buttons onto the last two F keys.

The grapic drivers for X are not as good as those
from MacOS. Fast enough for everthing but to view
a movie. Firefox is usable.

It is a little tricky to get the right kernel, but then
it works flawless. The problem is, you boot the kernel
from MacOS and therefore you need the right one from start.
Depending on your keyboard you need to configure your X
to have all keys.

So, dont do it until you have the patience to figure
everything out :) I have a howto online, but its german.
Let me know if you need some informations, then i ll try
to translate it.

I needed a Unix back when i did this for network debugging
with customers. But to be true, its better to have a MacOS
on it and switch to a small intel based notebook for Unix ;)
Not everything is ported to PPC and some software does
not compile on the PPC. There is a ssh for Mac and even
some network tools for ping, traceroute and so on.

Today i use a IBM T20 700 MHz with a FreeBSD current.
Its small and just perfect with FreeBSD.

I have a powerbook 3400c that I use quite often for simple tasks like
text / email even some simple browsing etc... It's maxed out Ram and
very good battery (1+ hours) with 2gb hdd.
I recently bought and start using Avaya wireless and it just gave a
 whole new enjoyment to it...

However, I am now curious, whether I could switch to one of those
Unix/Linux flavors out there that can be installed and run on pb3400c (I
think DebianPPC, NetBSD are to name but few...)

How many people out there has actually tried any of these unix/linux on
pb3400? Can wireless be still working? and which flavor of linux/unix is
 better suited to pb?

Hello,

I noticed it getting quiet and I was just curious to know what non-Macs all
you have. Please list OS and processor type.

 My Non-Macs are:

Setsuna: HP Pavilion a520n, AMD Athlon XP 3200+ Barton @ 2.1 Ghz , SuSE Linux
 9.1 Professional

 and

Hotaru: Toshiba Satellite 325 CDT, Intel Pentium I MMX @ 233 Mhz, RedHat
 Linux
 7.3 Publishers Edition

As you can tell, I have a habit of naming my computers after my favourite
 Sailor Moon characters..

There is a AMD XP 2400 @ 2 Ghz running XP and Debian. This is the one for
everybody
to play games or for me to digitize old videotapes i sometimes buy for an Euro
or two :)

There is a AMD Duron @ 700 Mhz running a FreeBSD. It is my internetgateway
including
firewall and [EMAIL PROTECTED], my private mail and webserver and my AppleTalk
fileserver.
Its always online and is placed down in the cellar.

There is a IBM T20 notebook @700Mhz running a Windows 2000 and a FreeBSD.
The windows partition is mainly for watching DVDs and for everything you
want from a notbook when travelling. The FreeBSD partition is for debugging
when i am at work.

Re: Internet / 1400

2005-08-01 Thread Manfred

Hello,

My lower back is DOA. Has been for about a month, and I need to look at
another option rather than sitting at this dark desktop machine.

sorry to hear about this. I earn my money by sitting in front of a PC.
What i can tell you, you are not alone ;)

I can get the 1400 online, except it stops at getting online during the
last step, where it lets you know when you are on. It just quites and
gives me an error message and the modem doesn't finish getting on.
The 1400 has 64 megs of memory and doubled using ram doubler.
Any ideas. Sitting on this chair, at this computer, is killing my back.

You should post the error. What you descrivbe can have many causes.
From uncomplete installation or damaged hardware to wrong/not working
ISP acount.

Some additional hints.

If you look straight forward your view should point to a little bit
below the center of screen. If not , put something below the screen.
Avoid it to stare down to the monitor. Such kills your neck and later
the rest of yur back.

Get a better chair. After you have set up optimal ergonomic tablehight
and position of monitor, the chair is more neccessary as you probably
want to belief.

My back was killing me for years. I tried out a lot. Medics, massage,
gymnastics and what else... Finally i found the japanese way of computing ;)
Wich means for me: no chair at all.

http://www.ryzom.de.eu.org/pics/DSCF1050.JPG

I found this out while trying Shiatsu (i also have a grade in Shiatsu).
Sitting in seiza http://www.mkzc.org/seiza.jpg is the most natural
way to sit. Beginners might use the small chair. Advanced ones dont
need the small chair.

This way of sitting needs a little more discipline to sit. After a
while your body gets used to it and you will start to sit more
consciously. Give it a try. Your back will be thankful.

Re: Two questions

2005-07-11 Thread Manfred

Hello,

1.- I just realized that I didn't receive the Digest since Wednesday.
Anybody here has the same problem?

i dont know if there was a problem or if it just was quiet.

2,- I have Quicktime Pro 6.0.3, and a friend gave me a CD with some
home movies in the .ASF format. I told her that there was no way I
could see them, so she used some program (she uses Windoze) and made
them .mpg. However, when I tried to see them, a window pops up that
says: The file can't be opened because Quicktime doesn't have a
component that the movie needs or something very similar.
The same thing happens with my PB 3400c with OS 9.1, my Wallstreet
with OS 9.2.2 and upgraded Power Macintosh 5500 with OS 9.2.2.

There are a lot of MPG formats out there. The DivX or VidX formats
are the most popular out there. Quicktime does not support them.

There might be 3 reasons. First is kind of politics. Apple has
its own MPEG4 format, which is comparable to DivX and VidX.
Second is about license. Third is that on OS X some Unix players
exist (MPlayer) which play those files perfect. So nobody is
programming VidX codes for MacOS 8-9.

There is one solution for older Macs.
First get the free DivX codec from www.divx.com for MacOS classic.
This codec is somehow bugged and you need another small plugin
to make it work. I dont remember the URL to this fix but will
post about it later.

Anyway. To play larger resolutions ( lets say more then 400X300)
you need some power. My PB3400 and my Kanga are not fast enough
for a 640x480 movie, but the Kanga does 400X300.
The Wallstreet might do it, since there is a ATi gfx onboard.

Another solution is http://www.3ivx.com/

Your friend could use this to convert the movies to 3ivx.
This codec is quite amazing. There is also a version for Mac.
With this you could watch the movies.

There is also http://www.3ivx.com/divxdoctor/

With divx doctor you can convert most AVI files tO Quicktime
with 3ivx codec. This, depending on the filesize, needs resources
and time. Some movies loose sync of audio and video.

Re: email through my PC

2005-07-06 Thread Manfred
Hello,

some of the PB170 had a internal modem. If you have one use this
to receive your mails. Probably you can get one somewhere out there.
If not i would say this is close to impossible.

With 7.0.1 you will hardly get the same mail client for PC and the Mac.
I am not sure if System 7.0.1 can allready read DOS floppy disks. There is no
PCMCIA slot for a memorycard (which would be a cool solution).

If you would have an older desktop Mac you could build a serial network,
but you have a PC.

Use the modem or try to get one. You will be fine as long as nobody
mails you a movie or lots of photo.

Okay, seeing that I'm still having trouble getting my PB170 to let me use
it for email, I was wondering if there is anyway that I could simply
transfer emails back and furth between my PC and my mac using either
floppies or stargate. All I want is to be able to upload the email
messages to my mac in the morning, answer them on the move throughout the
day and then transfer them back to the PC to be sent. The version of
Eudora I have is I believe 2.something (I'm not home right now, so I can't
check). I'm using OS 7.0.1 if that matters. Thanks for any help.

Re: Best way to legally copy DVD

2005-07-02 Thread Manfred
Hello,

First off, to legally copy a copy-protected commercial DVD you'll have to
move to a country where it's legal, currently it's not legal in the good
 ol' USA. That said:

You are not allowed to make any copys ? Is it only for DVD or for just
anything. I mean copys of old video tapes and mp3s of music cds one
really owns isnt a bad thing. I mean video tapes get damaged easy and
mp3 is much more convinient then the original CDs (outdoor for example)

I am against piracy but a private copy is no piracy. And what happenes
to someone who recorded a movie from tv to his VCR or a more modern
DVD recorder ???

If i buy a DVD with a foreign country code, copy it and burn
it again with country code 0 or 2 (europe) i guess i broke
every copyright law availabe ;)

I guess i should check german laws are about this :)

About the problem having a number of movies on the notebook for
travel...

I do only have Macs with OS up to 8.6. But i am wondering if it
is not possible to make a disc image of a DVD with OS X ??

One could easily mount them and play the movie from hard drive.

if I saw all of the Trojan Horses and Worms working in the background
 within my
OS 9.1 system and greedily taking all of my personal info back to
 their masters for nefarious purposes.

Althogh it is possible, i would not belief it until someone is proofing
this. To hack or spy a Mac OS 7-9 special knowledge and software
is required. The common Windows virus/trojans wont do the job.

I tend to say there is one Mac classic in a million connected
compuers out there on the net.

If i where a hacker, i would not care about fishing in such a small
pool. Would you ?

I am working for an ISP and there was only one case of virus on
a Mac cassic in all those years. An this was a destructive virus
and not a trojan horse.

Re: Why do used Pismos sell for more than titaniums?

2005-06-22 Thread Manfred

Hello,

I am looking at used powerbooks from numerous sources (Baucom/wegener/ebay)
and was surprised to find that G3 generation powerbooks seem to go used for
 more than the earlier titaniums/g4s.

By this I mean pismos and arguably lombards compared to 400/500Mhz titaniums.

Why is this? I do sorta get the impression titaniums quality is poor--but the
extra horsepower and screen size seems like that should offset it.

Am I drawing the wrong conclusions/looking in the wrong places?

not long ago i had to make a similar decision.

What did i want from the notebook ?

I wanted connectivity and the posibility to play AVI/Quicktimes
and DVD. Although i am happy with my Kanga i really missed DVD
and the graphics is to slow for a 640x480 AVI.

I do have a fast workstation in office, so the notebook is more
a private thing for fun. Thats why one dont want to spend too much
money.

If you take prices and performance the Pismo is the no. 1 powerpook out there.
The Titanums are not bad but just more expensive.

I think many people come to this conclusion and try to buy a Pismo.

Unfortunately the Pismos are now quite overpriced atm wich brought
me personally to a IBM Thinkpad T20. The T20 is really the same
league then the Pismo but at half of the price. I do miss the
Mac OS classic on it, but by profession i am used to FreeBSD
wich runs finde on this notebook. But thats an other story ;)

Re: Networking question -- OT?

2005-06-21 Thread Manfred
Hello,

woohaa. Quite an adventure.

If the new modem from earthlink has a private IP then i really
tend to say that it is allready a router and not only a modem.

Probably everything would be fine if you just plug in a hub or
switch and plug your Macs into the hub/switch.

In this case the SMC is not needed or even not usable here.

Most modern routers have the posibillity to configure the MTU.
If not, sometimes the problem are the older ethernet cards in Macs,
you still have to use the IPNettuner.

I did a little research and decided on an SMC router. Last night I
attempted to set up the system and of course, the router can't find
the modem. The SMC tech said it was because the modem has a private
IP address and said to contact Earthlink and find out how to change
the modem to Bridge Mode so that the IP address would become public.
I did this and still no dice.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. BTW, should I still need to use
IPNetTuner to change the MTU? Any security issues in using Bridge Mode?

 Thanks,
 Spence

Re: 540c to broadband via cable (not wireless)

2005-06-17 Thread Manfred

Hello,

I currently have (and am keeping) dialup. However, when I am visiting hotels
(more frequently lately), can I hook up to their free broadband service?
 How? What do I need?

depends on the hotel. If they offer wireless, then you have no
chance with the 540 only. You would need a small wireless
receiver where you can connect your 540 in.

If they offer ethernet you just need a transceiver for your
540.

You will not need any additional software. Should be a usual
DHCP Ethernet connection.

Re: WTB: 3400 CD

Hello,

probably very hard to get. You need a spezial one for PB3400,
cause the 7.6.1 update is a spezial one. Be careful, there
is a common 7.6.1 update and a PB3400 only 7.6.1 update

But in my opinion the 8.6 fits this Powerbook best.

Anyone have one for sale or know where I can get a PowerBook 3400
 series CD (With 7.6)?

 Thanks...

Well, Listers, I should have researched the archives for my answer! I
know that Ken Vann's macwireless site

Turns out that my loop problem is addressed in his FAQ's. The first
suggestion there is to install the files manually. I will try that and

Hi,

i did install a Debian on a 3400 and a Yellowdog on a Kanga.

You can not boot from CD on the 3400. You must boot with BootX, the
installation kernel and the installation ramdisc. All is included
on the CD.

The latest Yellowdog will probably not work on older Macs like
the 3400. I am in office now, but i can give more detailed informations

Re: 3400 problems

2005-04-10 Thread Manfred

Hello,

did you exhange the PRAM battery ? It is located on the small panel
above the keyboard. Those battery is rechargable ( when not dead)
It can also help to leave the 3400 for two days plugged in.
So the PRAM battery can recharge.

Things that i have tried are

removed every thing from the logic board of the bad 3400 and replaced
it with the good parts starts straight up shows a 200mhz cpu in system
 profiler, all fine.

put all the other parts on the known good logic board nothing.

I changed every part 1 by 1 that's ram hdd power-board ethernet card
screen and every time only one book starts the other is not even
 getting glod.

 i really do not understand.

I bought a lowcost cardbus 2.0 card and gave it a try.

You need a sharp knife to remove the nose topview left.
With removed nose it fits physically.

It worked. Only in USB 1.x but it worked. can use
printer and my Fuji camera with this.

And it works only when card is inserted when booting.
So no hotswap..

The manufacurer is HAMA but i think they
only sell in germany. Maybe in europe..

If you get no Apple card thry some cheap cards.
The chances are high to get one working.

I would like to buy a PCMCIA card to get USB ports on
my 3400c. Do you know if I normally need drivers to
make it work with my Powerbook? Do I need to make sure
 the manufacturer supplies Mac drivers?

I know the other thing to be concerned about is if the
card will physically fit in the slot.

Does anyone have a recomendation for a low cost PCMCIA
card for USB ports for powerbook?

 Here's a PCMCIA/USB card on eBay I'm considering. Do
you have any experience with it?

had the same problem with my PB540. I asked the support at global

Re: oldest OS for pb190cs?

2005-03-17 Thread Manfred

Hello,

according to

http://www.knubbelmac.de/mirrors/til/til8970.html

there is no system enabler below 7.5.2 for your PB190.
But your 5xx would run with 7.5

I need to know the oldest OS that can be installed on the pb 190cs. Apple
says its 7.5.2 whereas lowendmac allows 7.1.1. This would make all the
difference to me as I'm looking for a project machine that would be running
7.5 (Russian, so I can't count on updates). I'm wavering between the 190cs
and a 5xx to completely russify for both computer tinkering and language
 learning.

So... has anyone ever actually installed and used an os prior to 7.5.2 on a
 190cs?

 Thanks for your time.

Re: Wirelessly print from OS 9.2 Classic?

2005-03-10 Thread Manfred

Hello,

I¹ve got such good advice from you guys before that I thought I would see if
any of you had any thoughts on this.

 I have a Powerbook G4 running OS X.3.8

I have a Canon printer ip4000. It will print from OS X with the print driver
and it will print from OS 9.2 through the USB port.

 Question:

How do I get it to print from OS 9.2 wirelessly?

It would take a wireless printserver and network capable printer drivers.
Probably a Linux solution in combination with LaserWriter8 could do the
same. Never done it with a Canon, only with a HP.

I would say you should stick with the USB cable.

Re: Formatting and fresh install of 7.5.3 on a PB180

2005-03-04 Thread Manfred

Hi,

what you obtained from Apple are diskimages for floppies.

With Diskcopy you can make a set of installation floppies
out of them.

I am not sure if there is something on PC that can do this, if
not you have to transfer them somehow onto the PB180 and then
generate the installation floppies there.

It might be better to format first the hd before you install
7.5.3.

I recently picked up a PB180 and wanted to wipe the HD and do a fresh
install of OS 7.5.3 (which I picked up on Apple's site) - It has 7.1.x now.

But the thing is, I looked around and couldn't find out exactly how to do
this and as a PC user, I'm new to Mac's. I am able to format disks for it on
my PC using TransMac, but beyond that, I'm not sure if I should format
first, or if I copy all the bin files to the Mac, it will give me an option
before I install the OS to completely wipe and format the HD. I do not have
access to a CD-Rom drive for it, but I can make as many floppies as needed.

Any help or links I could be pointed to would be appreciated.
 thanks!

Re: Formatting and fresh install of 7.5.3 on a PB180

2005-03-04 Thread Manfred

Hello,

So, would it not work if I were to just transfer all the files to the
Mac HD and run them from there?
How would I format the HD?

it might. You can try to move all files on the hd and mount them.
It is possible to install from mounted diskimages.

But this would be no (clean) installation but an upgrade.

If you decide to generate the (was it 15 ?) floppies and boot from
the first this will boot into a small OS. There you can select the
hd by clicking and then format by selecting Initialize from the last
menue right side (named Extras if i remember correctly).

Re: Formatting and fresh install of 7.5.3 on a PB180

2005-03-04 Thread Manfred

Hello,

Ah, I get it. Yea, I don't want to just upgrade it.
 It's 19 floppies, yes. Alot, I know ;)

it is. Not too much if disk 18 isnt corrupted ;)

I just remembered, though, here in the office we have an old G3 sitting
around that I can use. I assume it would be best to format the disks from
that and use this diskcopy (?) to transfer the disk images over and then
boot from the first disk? Where can I get that?

Disk Copy should just be there. (search = apple+f) If unfortunately not,
then look on the installation-cd of the G3. Ther should be a folder disktools.

I this fails too, ther might be a version somewhere at apple.com.

Yes, generate on the G3 the floppies out of the images.
If it is a colored case there might be no floppy drive..
This will speed up things. You can boot already from disk1
while G3 is writing disk2. If one gets corrupted you can
make another one on the G3 without aborting the installation.

How much RAM does the PB180 have ? Probably you would like
to stay with 7.1 :)

Re: Formatting and fresh install of 7.5.3 on a PB180

2005-03-04 Thread Manfred
Hi,

Cool, thanks for your help. I will check the G3 shortly.
Shoot, it is the ver. with no floppy drive. So I guess that's out.

The PB180, right now, only has the base 4mb ram (I was going to upgrade that
 later though).

with 4mb ram 7.5.3 seems to me too much. If you get a full ram upgrade to
14mb it might be ok.

If I was to continue to run 7.1 on there, as you suggest, what would be the
best way to reset everything to factory?

Good question but hard to answer. Best would be you try to get a System 7.1
on ebay or probably here on the swaplist.

Although Systems 7.01 and 7.5 are free, 7.1 is not. Dont know why.

See, my worry is that I bought this off of someone and I want to make sure
all his stuff is completely off there. Since the HD is soo small, I want to
start out with as much space as possible. I had thought that, while doing
that, I might as well upgrade the OS. Maybe I am thinking like a PC person,
who knows ;) But, if 7.5.3 is going to be clunky, I am fine with sticking to
7.1 for now, as long as I can get it clean-as-possible.

With 7.5.3 the OS will eat up all your ram and mem swapping would
slow down this nice 68k book even more. If you have 10-20 meg
free space on your harddrive you have quite a lot of free space.

To clean up try following.

Old macs do not spread there files all over the machine like PCs or
Linux do.

In most cases you will find standalone apps with or without a prefsfile
in harddrive/systemfolder/preferences

Or you will find apps within their own folder and probably a prefs file

You can start an unknown application, look what it does and then decide
if you delete it or not. You will 99.9% not have any depencies to
ruin your setup. No dlls or such. One thing why we all love the old macs :)

Re: Rebuilding battery on 1xx PBs

2005-03-02 Thread Manfred

Hi,

 These descriptions on http://macs.freeshell.org/powerbook/index.htm
look promising. I have an PB 180c I would love to run on battery
again. Has anyone tried these suggestions and perhaps made pics? I
have no idea what awaits me if I open the battery case (and how do I
 do that?).

never tried it with PB180 batteries but did rebuild one for my
PB 540.

Sorry, no pictures available. I would say:

If you get it open, there is nothing inside to be scared of :)
There are some cells and probably a small circuit board.

To open it, it might be that you have to use some force.
Then use a really sharp knife and cut it open.

Note on a paper how they are connected and rebuild this with
new cells. It might be that the two parts of the case will not
stick together by themselfes after opening it. Try some adhesive...

Try it on a battery that is already dead, so you have nothing to loose.

Good luck ! It might be worth it. With up-to-date 2200 mA cells
my PB540 keeps going much longer then with an new, original battery.

AFAIK there are

Internet Explorer 5.x
Netscape 7
iCab 2.x

Explorer is already out. So try the other ones. iCab you can find
at www.icab.de. There should be a free version and iCab is the only
one for OS Classic which is still under development.

It always wants to use the internal PP500. Any tips greatly appreciated.

first try to switch off the internal modem. Second there was
a little program called SerialSwitch. Probably one of those
can help you out.

as far as i know there are only b-cards. Lucent works fine.
I have a Lucent silver and a Dell TrueMobile (wich is the

There is a good howto on the net. Make a google for

Re: MacPoET

2004-12-28 Thread Manfred
To Clark Martin, Manfred Guentner, and ACFX4501 I would like to say thank you
for such quick and informative responses, I will use the router to connect
the powerbook. I guess I just have to play with the control panels to get
 them
set correctly. Or are there any special control panels necessary to complete
 this setup.

 Thank for your assistance. Brad

Hi,

all you need is control panel TCP.

If you use DHCP on the router set up the TCP like here

http://www.starstream.net/support/mac/tcpip/tcpipos8.htm

Thsi is the easiest way. If you dont have DHCP on the router
then chose:

Configure:Manually
IP Address: a ip within the range configured on the router
example: router has 192.168.1.1 , then use here
  192.168.1.2
Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Router address: ip of router. here it would be: 192.168.1.1
Name server addr: ip of router if router can do this. if not
an ip of a nameserver. See documentation
  from your provider
Search domains: leave empty

Re: using MacPoET on a Pwrbk3400

2004-12-26 Thread Manfred
Hello fellow list members I am writing hoping to find someone who is
presently using MacPoET on a pwrbk. My Pwrbk 3400 is running with
 144mb of ram on OS
9.1 with a 2gig harddrive. The reason I am looking at MacPoet is because I
 am
trying run my Pwrbk through a Linksys router via PPPoE. I found a version
 1.1
on the Internet and downloaded it then decided to check here before
 I attempted
to set it up. I am looking for any information on how it works, what
 version
is viable and how to configure and troubleshoot it. Thank you for any and
 all
 help in this matter.

If you are connected through the router then it should be dealing
with PPPoE and your computer only needs to access the router using an
ordinary TCP/IP connection. In other words you do not need to run
MacPoet or any other PPPoE software on you r laptop or any other
 computer behind the router.

Hi,

i agree with this. As long as your Router has PPPoE funktion
you should use them. If your router doesnt support PPPoE
you should think about buying one.

Anyway, if you, due to circumstances, want or need to use MacPoET 1.1.1
i can confirm that it ist working fine. The configuration is a little
unusual, because the AppleTalk is used somehow as sort of loopback
interface. A small guide (german only) is here

http://www.netic.de/support/dsl/macos/

But its little to read. The most is clear through the pictures.

Re: 3400c - I give up again.

2004-12-22 Thread Manfred

Hi,

sounds bad. When i leave my 3400c for a week or so it chimes but
doesnt boot. When i leave it for a hour with AC plugged in, it
comes up fine. Its just a guess, but i think its has something
to to with the PRAM battery which is also recharchable.

The PRAM battery is connected to the powermanagers locic board.
The green thing under the speakers panel. So i would also suggest
to reset the powermanager for one or more times.

And then again... could it be the battery?

Will a bad battery cause these many issues?

 I simply don't know.

 Thanks,

Re: Hi from newbe

2004-12-14 Thread Manfred
Hi,

I have just come into ownership of a perfect PowerBook Duo 210. Donated
as a toy for my baby daughter. Having spent only a few minutes I have
been amazed by what a capable, easy to use and pleasant device this is.

Such a wonderful device must of course be made to work at something
productive clever and worthy of the Apple name. More than a toy for my
baby daughter. I am sure she will thank me this one day :)

Not knowing anything about these I have some questions and I hope there
may be some users who may know.

Firstly, does this device run TCP/IP with FTP, Telnet and maybe an email
reader? Does anybody have some software?

I guess you can setup TCP/IP on this machine. Which OS do you have
installed ? Add there are 68k clients for telnet, ssh, ftp, email
and WWW.

Secondly, does anybody know how I convert the 'PS2' style network plug
 into 10baseT?

You mean the serial port ? You can plug in a modem to come online.
If you can find somewhere a software for SLIP and a fitting cable
you can also connect to a Unixserver. Or you can connect to another
Mac.

Thirdly and most important, can any users suggest a good use for such a
 lovely device?

Reading mails, writing letters, use it as ssh terminal to a Unix-
workstation. For your daughter ther are some old games to play.

Re: Hi from newbe

2004-12-13 Thread Manfred

Hi,

I guess you can setup TCP/IP on this machine. Which OS do you have
installed ? Add there are 68k clients for telnet, ssh, ftp, email
  and WWW.

This is good news. I would be very interested in getting hold of one of
those. My OS is labelled as B1-7.1, with 8MB memory. Is there a good site
for software which runs on this OS?

Try some google. There are many sites with 68k stuff.

Install on your linuxbox the hotlineclient hx (terminal) or gtkhx (x11)
then you can get some stuff from my public 68k server fw.mague.org.
user or pass is not required. As far as i know everything there is legal.

Then you have to enable HFS somehow on Linux to use floppy-discs
between Linux and Powerbook.

For networking on old Macs you find here a little:

http://www2.muw.edu/~kdunk/muwmac/muwold.html

You mean the serial port ? You can plug in a modem to come online.
If you can find somewhere a software for SLIP and a fitting cable
you can also connect to a Unixserver. Or you can connect to another
  Mac.

A SLIP connection to my Linux box is an excellent idea. I really know very
little about Apple. This would be a cable connecting from the back-left
of the PowerBook? Are cables which connect to a 9-pin PC serial cable
socket from an Apple easy to find?

I found a free InterSLIP at the university of Berlin

http://autos.cs.tu-berlin.de/~unicef/SLIP.html

Its in german. Here are the downloadlinks:

ftp://ftp.cs.tu-berlin.de/pub/mac/comm/Engst/interslip-installer.sea

http://autos.cs.tu-berlin.de/doku/script.rtf

About the cables: I dont know if you can get one easy. Probably not.
Try to find a website where the pins are described. Maybe someone here
on the list has already a constructional drawing...

Does any member know of a CLIP client for this OS?

No, sorry not.

Reading mails, writing letters, use it as ssh terminal to a Unix-
workstation. For your daughter ther are some old games to play.

Sounds like a lot of fun. If you know of a good software site I would be
 very interested.

It is fun :) If not, this list would not exist :)

Google will deliver lots of them. Many universities have download
areas of old and very old macsoftware.

Bowser, ssh/telnet and ftp you will get on my hotline.
They work all with system 7.5.x . Should run on 7.1 also.

If you can not use hotline, then i will put some applications
on a webserver to download. Just let me know.

Re: dead BTI battery for PB 190/5300

2004-12-08 Thread Manfred
Powerbooks and Newton's packs used AA NiMH batteries. You can even buy
NiMH AA batteries with soldering tabs and refurbish the battery pack,
sometimes even using better cells which will last even longer. For more
on newton batteries, check out http://www.pda-soft.de he wrote a really
good guide to refurbishing different Newton's batteries and some are
 similar to the powerbooks.

Hi,

i refurbished a Powerbook 540c pack with modern cells. They should
probably have the doubble energy then the original ones.

But there is something more. The electronic of the battery
seems to calculate with the resistance of the cells. They are
all soldered serial and there is already a resistor.

Due to this all, the Powerbook 540c doesnt recognize the
real capacity of the battery.

Until now i didnt find the time, but next will be to measure
the resistant of an original battery and then modify the
self-refurbished with an resistor. So that the refurbished
one has the same reading as the original. Probably then
i get more power out of it.

I thought that the problem was not only the insertion of the cards
 but also the grounding.

Grounding is only a problem with certain Cardbus cards.

Early Cardbus cards had no provision for shielding, anyway.

Do you have more information about the topic grounding ?

I have a D-Link Ethernetcard which is not recognized at boottime.

As if the pc-card software ist not loaded. If i boot with a
16bit card and then exchange the cards then it is recognized.

I really would like to have the Ethernetcard running because i have

Does your PowerBook 3400c not have built-in Ethernet? Most U.S. models
have an on-board combo Ethernet-modem card.

It does. Its got buildin 10MBit and wireless 11 Mbit.
But the other card is 10 times faster.

D-Link DFE-690TXD Ethercard in Kanga

2004-12-04 Thread Manfred

Hi,

i have got a D-Link DFE-690TXD Ethercard. There are also
drivers for MacOS 8-9. Of course this is a 32bit cardbus card !

Anyway, i took a sharp knife an made it fitting into the
PCMCIA Slot. That worked fine with my USB card, so why not with
this one ;)

I ejected the Orinoco WLAN card and inserted the D-Link
and MacOS 8.6 recognized it. Since the card is not hot-swapable
i had to reboot the Kanga. But after reboot the card is recognized
1 out of aprox. 30 times.

When i boot with the Orinoco, eject it and insert the D-Link
the D-Link is always recognized. Only after rebooting its
gone again.

When it is recognized it works fine and fast.

Any hints why the card is recognized only randomly ?

Is everything ok with the books ? Backlight, Screen, keyboard
and battery ? On my 3400c the backlightbulb was broken and it
rebootet as soon as i removed the battery...

Have you reset the powermanager ? have you exchanged the
board with the powermanagement (the borad with the pins for the
battery) ?

What happens if you remove the battery and run them with
cable only ?

Re: PB520c rebuild

2004-12-02 Thread Manfred
Hello, I've inherited a PB520c. It came in many parts, not one of which was
a power supply. I've reattached the screen to the base by rebuilding the
hinge posts with urethane expoxy. I boosted the battery to approx. 12V and
gerry rigged 12Vs on the supply lines. It boots but, the top half of the
screen shows stripped rectangular blocks not the uniform color of the bottom
half. Could this be due to insufficient voltage or is there something else I
 am missing?

Hello,
i would tend to say its the videocable or the LCD itself.
Probably the videomemory.. but i dont think so.
If the voltage would be too low, i guess the 520c would
not boot at all.

Can you use a window to clean away the blocks ?

The cdroms from 190, 3400, 3500 should fit.

But you can install another os without a cdrom drive. Make a
boot-floppy with network access and install over the net.

Of course you will need a network and a second machine for this.

I installed my 540c and my LC this way.

Some recent ATA-6 drives seem to have problems in the 3400 and Kanga, but
I've never heard anyone having a problem with a Hitachi drive. Those are
based on the same IBM technologies that were used in the OEM drives Apple

Hi,

many thanks for that. I bought today a Hitachi 40 GB drive.
First i thought it does not work, since the drive is awful
silent :). Everything went fine. Lots of space and even
HFS works on this size. I need HFS to mount
it from the Linux-side. HFS+ is not supported there.

Re: Trackpad vs. Mouse (was Re: 5300c question)

2004-11-23 Thread manfred

Hi,

The most popular Microsofts are here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=encategoryid=5

Yes, IE 5.1.7 ist the best browser for MacOS 8-9.x. Also Quicktimeplugin
and Flash/Shockwaveplugin are working.

I like the Black Powerbook style :). Using text-buttons there is a lot
space on 800x600.

On 68k i suggest System 7.x and Netscape 4.03 (brwoser only).
4.03 is quite stable (ok, there are some java errors) and it
uses only little memory. The latest releases of iCab are
memory-beasts :)

NS 7 is available for OS 8/9.

Please give me an URL so I can download this, please, oh please. I've
been trying to find it on and off for weeks.

 Thanks in advance,

 ~Yersinia.

Re: Anyone running a Linux on a Kanga ?

2004-11-20 Thread Manfred Guentner

Just curious, what Linux OS are you using and is it faster than OS9 or

On the 3400 there is a Debian Sarge (kernel 2.4.25). Everything ist
running fine. Even WLAN or sleepmode when closing the lid.
The battery keeps going longer with Linux.

whatever was on the 3400? I always found Linux faster than any windows os I
used and curious about it on my 3400c.

It is somehow faster, depending what you want to do with it.

It might be fun. The Hoopper was for a time my only portabel.
Its got a wlan-card, a working USB pc-card for my Fuji-cam
and even dialup with IrDa and cellphone works. My job
brougth it (working on FreeBSD), that one day i wanted to
have some Unixflavor too :)

Some days ago i buyed a Kanga and wanted to install it like
the 3400.

Then highest possible will be MacOS X. Probably a 233 PPC might be a little slow

Off course 9.2.2 will run too. If you have available, then give

Re: Best OS for Wallstreet 233(slightly reverting back to my problem)

2004-11-17 Thread Manfred Guentner

Hello Dan,

 Go to www.powerbook3400c.com

i looked at your page since i have a Hooper too.

 Much detail is given there.

This is the NEW location of my famous Hooper Hotrodding pages.

Let me tell you something about plannedfutureupgrades.html

If you want to install Linux on the Hooper i would not use
BlueLabel. Try a direct installation on a second partition.

On my Hooper there is a Debian Sarge with Kernel 2.4.25
running. Very stable. Everything is supportet, even 802.11b.

With BootX you can at boottime select which OS you want
to load.

Anotherthing is: I want to give DVD a try too.
I bought a slimline from a bigger Powerbook
and will try to build it in.
