Re: pb165c screen problem

2003-07-28 Thread Rick Delzeith
If the battery is dead or nearly so, the 165c won't boot even from the PS.
Pull the batt and see if that works.
Rick

I got a a pb165c that was running ok up until last night. Something strange
happened I tried to boot it from the battery and it struggled like there
wasn't enough juice in the battery, it basically made some strange
electrical noises and then shut off. When I hooked it back up to the power
supply I had a hard time getting it to come on, it would chime then shut
back off. When it finnaly did boot the screen wouldn't come on. It was
like the contrast was turned all the way up, it was basicly black with the
back light on. The contrast button didn't seem to work. The brightness
would go up and down but no effect from the contrast slider. Is it totally
dead or could I possibly revive it.
Thanks

Justin

Re: PB 500 Series Batteries Help (A)

2003-07-28 Thread Rick Delzeith

Very good advice indeed. One tip that I've not seen in the docs,
when using Intelligent Battery Recondition. When you have an
unrecognizable battery try launching IBR with the right bay empty.
When it asks for a batt. plug it in. IBR should then go into
Extended Precharge. May take 10-15 min. to complete. Alternate
with EMMpathy several times untill the values show OK. Out of
10 or so batts. only one failed to recover with this method.
Rick

Second: From my experience, 500 series PowerBook batteries (they have 8
NiMH cells in series of 1800 mah and 1.2V minimum _each_) require at
least 4.5 volts for the battery microprocessor to communicate with the
notebook charging system. If you take a 500 series battery that only
shows 150 milliamps on your voltmeter and the battery will accept a
charge from your common battery charger (usually evident after checking
for a few seconds with the voltmeter), if the battery will rise to 4.5
to 5 volts, then the battery can be checked by Apple's Intelligent
Battery Recondition, VST's EMMpathy, or Linds' iBUS (BU500 Deluxe) and
possibly brought to a working charge. Sometimes, the battery will not
accept a charge and stay at about 100-300 millivolts, even after 24
hours of charging. The battery is then absolutely dead, that is, all
the cells are dead and the battery is a candidate for opening and
replacing the cells (All notebook batteries are simply packs of normal
batteries cells -A, AA, AAA, C, D, 4/5 C, 4/5 D, etc.- (NiCad or NiMH)
arranged to give the voltage and amperage necessary to run the notebook.

Is there a smaller driver for the 7.6 that I could download?

Re: Dead PB 150?

2003-03-19 Thread Rick Delzeith

I don't have a 150, but do own a pair if 165c's with dead batteries.
They will boot up fine with no battery installed, but die immediatly when I
plug in a battery. Have to get on ebay and look for at least one good batt.
Rick

Howdy,
Just obtained a PB 150 that does not power-up. It has
not been used in a few years (was surplus from a local
school district). At first, I thought it was the power
supply, but when this same unit worked on my Portable,
I knew that the cause must lay elsewhere. I opened the
unit and found a 2.4v battery unit attached to the
upper case and PCB that appears to have a good amount
of corrosion on int. The primary battery is most
assuredly kaput.
Is it possible that the 2.4v battery is the culprit in
this things inability to start up, or are there other
tricks I should try?

Gracias,
RL

the dead batt in. It should go into extended precharge mode. It may take
several times, but I've got a few completely dead ones back. Also helps to
alternate with EMMpathy in between IBR
Rick

I need a little help with my Powerbook 500 series battery. What is the best
way to open it so that it can be recelled and put back together again? And
also, in the process of taking off the darker plastic sleeve thing on the
opposite side of the terminals, I managed to break the clip that keeps the
battery in the PowerBook. But I do have an extra battery-compartment cover
that I can sacrifice if I can use it to re-sleeve the battery so that it
will stay in the PowerBook.

Can someone who has recelled PB500 series batteries please give some take
apart/put together instructions? Anywhere on a website?

Re: PB 540c modem gone bad??

Try here for the GV software
http://63.104.169.60/PNF:byName:/PowerBook%20500%20Series%20Items/

Rick

I was given a PB 540c that was having a consistent (Epson) printer
connection issue. After a number of attempts to resolve the issue, we
decided the best option was to do a clean install of the OS (was 7.5.3, now
7.6) and this resolved the printer connection issues. We reformatted the HD,
then installed 7.6. A new problem seems to have arisen - we don't seem to be
able to use the modem. Previously we used AOL 3.0 and it accessed the modem
fine. But now we are unable to get it to work at all. My suspicion is the
modem initialization is failing, but nothing we have tried works. I was able
to install AOL 4.0, which has better automated options for dealing with
modems and it is unable to find the modem (using 4.0 was a suggestion from
AOL tech support).

I'm hard pressed to think the modem has gone bad suddenly, but everything I
try seems to suggest that. Any clues any one has to offer?

P.S. I had copied over modem, TCP/IP, AOL prefs, etc from the original
system from the complete CD backup we did, but that did us no good and AOL
tech support stated it wouldn't use those prefs until it was logged in to
the account the first time - something we've not been able to accomplish.

TIA,

Mark

AppleTalk is set to Ethernet, TCP/IP was tried on PPP and Ethernet settings

I've got a 8.1 540c with a GV powerport mercury, and I've been having
the same symptoms. I've found that if I click connect again after
getting the in use notice, I get a different error message-- this
one about not getting the correct response from the modem- please
check connections. Oh yeah-- it's not too difficult to check what
kind of modem it is, if you're careful and have a #8 torx screwdriver.
The modem card is underneath the memory expansion card, which is
underneath the middle metal cage underneath the keyboard. Two screws,
a bit of fiddling, and you're there. Mine was marked on the top.

I've tried the express modem software recommended by the person with
the swell name (Dana, but not me) but my startup freezes on the
express modem extension. I looked around a bit on the web, and
apparently my mercury is a software modem, meaning that it uses the
540c processor to handle the regular modem tasks-- so it needs pretty
specific software to run it. Global Village Fax Center 2.5.5, I
think. It'll probably slow programs down a bit.

I have an external modem that works, but it would be nice to be
able to use the internal modem once in a while-- even at 19.?k.

2002-04-26 Thread Rick Delzeith

Battery Recondition? I've got a PB5300c running 8.1.
