Re: PB100 Screen
I was the guy who posted on the caps, and to be honest, I gleaned that from Applefritter (plus another site; don't remember which). To be honest, just not too sure. We may need to look at the logicboard carefully and see if anything may have become unseated or looks odd (easy task... yeah, right). That's the only thing I can think of doing at this point. Re: PB100 screen
Ben wrote - Do they age with use, or simply age as humans, even if they do nothing? This specific PB 100 has been used intensively for 4-5 years (1992-1996) then it was replaced by newer models and I just switch it on once every other month. In the last 8 months it has been continuously plugged. BTW. I have a spare LCD with the whole thing so will try to see. Ben Let me try this again (got bounced)... From what I've found, most of the screen problems associated with the PB100 have to do with those bad caps... but even the sources I've found are inconclusive at best. I have yet to actually read of an instance where replacing the capacitors has been done; either they've done it and had a modicum of success and simply haven't posted the data or they haven't, most likely. Why these things deteriorate is beyond me. The one I was gifted with had sat in storage for a number of years. The owner assured me that it had indeed worked before it was packed away. Now, it doesn't. I removed the screen, and sure enough, the capacitors had leaked. The way you can determine this, by the way, is to take the screen out, flip it around and look for the two rows of little tiny black cylinders, four per row. Look at the board beneath them. Does it look like there's an oily residue on it? If so, they leaked. This is where it gets puzzling. As we've read, there have been PB100 users who've managed to acquire replacement screens and have had the same run of luck; even right out of the box, they are dark. This has led some of them to assume that there is a problem on the logicboard end of the computer. They may be right. So far, though, everything I've read points to those pesky capacitors. One person reported that washing the board helped. I tried to contact them, they never responded, so please, dear citizens, do not try that at home. I can't help but feel that somewhere in some long lost TIL there's info about this. Surely, our friends at Cupertino had to get some complaints. Of course, since the machine is no longer supported, that may be moot. When I find the courage (and the parts), I'll try this and share the experience with my friends here. Meantime, try that replacement screen, see if perhaps it's managed to avoid this bug. Rob Robert Little Astronomy Space Artist I have loved the stars too dearly to be fearful of the night... Re: PB100 screen
Ben wrote... Suddenly the screen of this PB 100 stopped working. The PB 100 completes the boot either from the HD or the floppy, but on the LCD there is nothing, just the backlight ring works, while the contrast does not change anything. Ideas? This is not just one but possibly eight components that have failed; there are eight electrolytic capacitors on the back of the screen that age and leak, and once they do, you get the dark screen. I have a 100 in the same predicament, and based upon my digging, this seems to be the fate of most of them; the screens age and simply stop working. Replacing the caps shouldn't be that hard, but getting some of the exact value is. They are 5v 33uF, poloarized electrolytics. Mouser has them at a higher voltage, 16v, but I haven't tried it yet. In fact, I've not met anyone who has. Should note that Sun Remarketing had PB100 screens for a while. Wow, lessee... In order of age... IIci - w/the '040 card and composite video out. Sys 6! Portable - Currently dead (blown resistor on board). Plus - Movers cracked the case, damaged the analog. PowerBook 100 - Works... sorta (screen needs repair). Centris 660AV - My main video astronomy machine. Quadra 605 - Looks cool, runs nice, don't need it. PowerBook 150 - In route - eBay find. PowerBook 540c - My main machine. Really. PowerMac 6100/60AV - Might keep this one. PowerMac 6100/66 DOS - Cool, but redundant. PowerBook 5300c - Loose plug (surprise), but nice. PowerMac 7200/90 - My future server. PowerMac 5260/120AV - A TV with screen capture. iBook (Tangerine) - Being repaired (needs keyboard, CD) But my most used machines are my old Tandy Model 102 laptop and my Palm IIIxe (with GoType keyboard). I also have some PC laptops, such as a Toshiba 225CDS and an IBM ThinkPad TP500 (a sublaptop), and a PC desktop, an HP Pavillion, crippled with a Celeron and Windows ME. Think that covers it. Powerbook 100 150 Issues
Me again, First, just wondering if anyone here knows if the capacitors that fail on the LCD screens of the PB100 can be replaced with something other than electrolytics? The ones that I need are very hard to obtain, and I'm just giving up looking. Next issue - I just bought a PB150 off eBay for an extremely low amount ($.99; it had issues). I was thinking that the screen could be swapped, but from what I can tell, nada. However, it at least has a screen that fires up... except for those yellow lines that run down. Re: New PB 100 Owner w/Problems...
Yeah, I know all about the pain... I'm astro_rob! After opening it up again (and I've got to tell you, the folks at Apple should have made all PBs this easy to access), I can't help but notice a slight film under the caps, with considerable pooling under one. Pretty sure I've isolated the problem. You know, I wanted a PB100 for almost as long as I wanted a Portable. I really needed a small System 6 machine. But you know, with all the pain I'm going through here, I'd almost rather got back to a PB150 and run 7.1; about as light, and has an IDE drive, making it eminently more repairable. The lack of an ADB port is an easy fix as well. Hmmm sounds like a blog entry in the making... New PB 100 Owner w/Problems (The PB, That Is...)
Well, I figured that now would be a good time to resubscribe to this list (hello again) since I've been gifted with two Powerbooks in two days (a 5300 and a 100), plus a pre-existing 540c, a Portable (needs work) and iBook (in the works). Today's question concerns my PB100. From what I've been told, this machine has sat for some time unused. After replacing the PRAM batteries, I tried to fire the thing up. There was a chime, and the screen lit up... dark blue, with a lighter glow on the left. There was harddrive noise, so obviously an attempt was being made to boot. After I reset the machine (both reset and interupt switches), I get a micro-second glimpse of a bright, normal screen on restart. I've tried several different ways to reset the PMU, but so far, it's always the same result - the blue screen of... yawn. Any thoughts? PowerBook 180c Problem
Hey Y'all, First, just wanted to thank those who responded to my post (was searching for small hard drive for 180); I have a couple of options there. Muy gracias! Portable Problems
Hi Folks, I'm starting to think my ol' Portable might be in deep trouble. The battery having long since died, in the past I ran this machine in the two popular modes that seem tallied about on the 'Net; the 9vdc power supply going in on the PRAM battery plus the original Portable power supply, and the 9vdc transistor PRAM battery installed with a Powerbook 150 PS plugged in. Both seemed to work... ...for a while. Now, the machine is hanging during powerup, frequently failing to even start. Then, while it's running, it locks up and/or reboots in some applications (my astronomy and terminal apps seem especially prone to this). Admittedly, the machine has not been used much lately, and has been stored for about 4 months. Any guesses? Is this a harbinger of impending doom? Dead PB 150?
Howdy, Just obtained a PB 150 that does not power-up. It has not been used in a few years (was surplus from a local school district). At first, I thought it was the power supply, but when this same unit worked on my Portable, I knew that the cause must lay elsewhere. I opened the unit and found a 2.4v battery unit attached to the upper case and PCB that appears to have a good amount of corrosion on int. The primary battery is most assuredly kaput. Is it possible that the 2.4v battery is the culprit in this things inability to start up, or are there other tricks I should try? Gracias, RL __ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo!
