Re: New Low End Mac email lists

2006-01-21 Thread Robert Patterson

Well, yes, it is slightly amusing, but I've had to face the fact that
we're suddenly in a whole new Mac world... and it won't be long before
many listers here feel like orphans in the new MacIntel environment!

I think that the low-end lists here will become even more valuable
as time wears on, for those of us who need support and encouragement in
keeping our Now-All-Vintage Macs up and running! :-)

 Rob

Does anyone else find it even slightly amusing that LOW END Mac is
running these lists? ;-)

Peace,
Drew

Dave,

Open your System Folder, and then the Control Panels folder within that.
Look for a control panel named PC Exchange. If it's not there, it
explains why you can't read PC-formatted (DOS) disks on your System 7.1
Mac. You'll need to get that.

Hi I am a newbie to this list. I was given a Mac Power Book 145B. It
has System 7.1 and Microsoft. I need some guidence on how to get files
from my PC to the floppy drive on the Mac. I have some stuff I have
dowloaded but I am having a hard time understanding it.

Re: email through my PC

2005-07-05 Thread Robert Patterson

...I was wondering if there is anyway that I could simply transfer
emails back and furth between my PC and my mac using either floppies or
stargate. All I want is to be able to upload the email messages to my mac
in the morning, answer them on the move throughout the day and then transfer
them back to the PC to be sent. The version of Eudora I have is I believe
2.something (I'm not home right now, so I can't check). I'm using OS 7.0.1
if that matters. Thanks for any help.
Colin the computer illiterate

Colin,
Your question is amazingly similar to something I was trying to do last
year, and although I found a solution, it was too complex (too many steps)
to continue doing for long. But as they say, there has to be a way...!
I think the first thing you should do is find out what version of Eudora
you're using on the Mac, and also if it has a function to Import or Export
mail.
Also, if you're using Outlook Express on your PC under Windows, it has
the ability to import and export... it saves them as .eml files, which
are just text files, but contain the complete email header information.
You might also consider using Eudora on your PC, since there may be
a version that would be compatible with imported or exported files; you'd
have to see...
I know that's not much help, but you sure have an interesting idea!
Best of luck, and keep us aware of your progress.

Re: IR file transfer on PB 190

2005-07-03 Thread Robert Patterson

Caleb,

Even if the IR transfer won't work (it's doubtful), you have another
option, one which I use all the time between my various Macs and my
Windows machines.

That option is StarGate, a shareware package which has both Mac (using
System 7.1+) and Windows (3.1 and 95+ versions) applications. You only
need a null-modem cable hooked between the machines. It's pretty neat;
you have Incoming and Outgoing folders on each platform, and anything
placed in the out folder on one platform gets transferred to the in folder
on the other platform automatically when the programs are activated.

 Rob

I'm going to get my dad's old Toshiba Satellite 325, and I'd like to know if
there's any way possible to transfer files over IR to the Satellite from the
190, and vice versa. I fully intend on keeping the 190 as a travel machine,
however, and I'd like to be able to share files without resorting to the
floppy dance that I use when transferring files to and from my Linux
machine. I also don't want to deal with the hassle of e-mailing files to
myself, but I may have no choice. Help please.

Re: File Types; LineFeeds

Oh, I still haven't found a web browser for 7.5.5. Any suggestions?

John

Give iCab a shot. I use it on most of my vintage Macs.

The current free version is 2.9.8, I believe. iCab 3.0 is in beta,
but won't be out for a while.

iCab won't render a lot of sites that adhere to MS-only standards (yuck),
but it opens most simple sites.

Go to http://www.icab.de for downloads.

Re: OS 7.0.1 and PB 145- need help w/disk image

2005-03-21 Thread Robert Patterson

Bill,

What I have done to get a new OS on my PB170 was to boot with Gamba's
RAMdisk booter, which boots the PowerBook into System 7.5, installs a
RAMdisk, copies System 7.5 files to it, and then switches to the RAMdisk
as the boot disk. The floppy is then ejected, and since the PB is running
from RAMdisk, you can use the floppy drive to install an OS of your choice
on the PB's hard drive.

Contact me off-line if you need a copy of this great utility, because I
don't think it's available any more from Gamba's web-site.

 Rob

Hi Ric, thanks! I know there's probably a simple solution to this, but as
I can't seem to find it on my own...

I can boot up from the Netwk Access floppy, but both Put Away, and
Eject commands cannot eject the floppy cuz it's the os in use. Is there
some other command that will eject it after booting so I can then put in
the first OS floppy? Thanks.

Rebuilding PB170 batteries?

Does anyone know of a web-site or archive that has information on
re-building the battery pack for a PowerBook 170? I understand that they
are standard-sized NiCad's inside, and I'd like to give it a try.

Battery rebuilding info?

2003-08-22 Thread Robert Patterson

A friend of mine sent the following message a couple of weeks ago, but he
didn't get any responses, so I thought we'd try again...
-

I'm considering the idea of rebuilding one of my PowerBook 170 batteries.
I was wondering if there are any sites on the 'net that would have some
clear instructions on opening the plastic case, specs on the proper NiCd
cells themselves, and any tips for successful replacement.

TIA.

Re: PRAM batteries are NOT watch cells

2003-02-15 Thread Robert Patterson

Does this apply to all PowerBooks, or just some of the newer ones? The reason
I ask is that I thought the PRAM battery in my PowerBook 170 was a lithium
cell. So I thought it would be interesting to know if it was rechargeable.

 Rob

Any time a PB is being run
from its main battery or the AC power supply, a trickle charge is being
applied to the PRAM battery as well.

Technically, you didn't use the installer to make floppies; you used
floppies to transfer the installer image to a hard drive.

Re: Mac OS

2003-02-12 Thread Robert Patterson

Fran,

The downloads for System 7.5 were regular floppy images of an install set,
as you say.

I think it's System 7.5.3 which is only available as a set of images that
must be mounted on the desktop and installed from there.

 Rob

I haven't followed this thread entirely but if the question is about the
downloadable disk images on Apple's site...I too, have made a set of
floppies using them and have installed OS 7.5 on several machines this
way. Is the debate about whether or not this is possible? If so, it is,
even by a Mac novice like me.

Maybe if you made it clear EXACTLY what OS it is that you have...?
I've seen you write 7.5.? , but what does the ? signify? Is it a zero
or a 3?

So, I think I understand that you have DiskCopy images of some OS, and
that possibly you are trying to convert these to floppy disks on your PC?

Is that the case?

  Rob

the images are THE FULL INSTALL SET (DISKCOPY) images :) from apple ^.^
