Re: pb 520 hinge questions x2

2005-04-06 Thread Shani, Naftali
IMHO, those hinges should not be lubricated. The whole idea is that friction is
holding the screen/cover at the desired angle. Lubricating them will defeat
this.

I believe that the cracked 'plastic' is actually the aluminum casting, and I
don't know if there is a fix.

Sure enough one of the plastic bits that the screws attach through is
cracked.

Anybody out there have any tips to fix this, and prevent the other
side from breaking? Should I loosen or tighten these screws?

Is there any way to lubricate PB hinges? I figure if someone knows the
answer to Erich's question then maybe they might know about lubrication.
WD40 won't do but maybe something else will. :)

Should be pretty simple: if you have a hub, then use a straight through
Ethernet cable.
If no hub, use a cross-over Ethernet cable.
Enable AppleTalk to use Ethernet (by default, it will use the modem/printer
port), and you should be able to see the other Mac via the chooser. I'm
assuming here that you allowed yourself to log on as a user.

Re: PB 520c connectivity

2005-02-23 Thread Shani, Naftali
10/100BaseT Ethernet cable, either x-over or pass-through, uses 4-pairs -
unlike your standard phone which may have 1- or 2-pairs (Tip and Ring if 1-pair
is present, or T/R/T1/R1 for 2-pairs), and terminates in a modular 6-pin
connector (FCC designation: RJ-11).

The Ethernet pairs terminate in a modular 8-pin connector (wrongly referred to
as FCC designation RJ-45). For 10/100BaseT only 2-pairs are in use: the
straight cable uses pins 1/2 for the 1st pair (normally called Tx) and pins 3/6
for the 2nd pair (normally called Rx).
The x-over cable connects pins 1/2 at one end to 3/6 at the other end, and 3/6
to 1/2. This effectively fools the transceivers to this that a hub is involved
here.

For 1000BaseT (copper GigE), all 4-pairs are in use, in half duplex mode.

I hope this helps. If not feel free to ask for more info.

You're gonna have to spell this stuff out for me, I thought there was
only one type of ethernet cable when I started this - the phone cord
looking one. I tried to use that cord and simply run it from the iMac
to the 520, turned on Appletalk, and nothing.

Re: pram battery

2005-02-09 Thread Shani, Naftali
Yes, the PRAM battery is probably discharged, but may not be dead yet. You see
- this is a rechargeable Li battery (coin size, Vanadium Pentoxide Lithium, to
be exact, and the PB is using 2 of them) that is charged when the AC power
adapter is used.
My recommendation is that you leave the PB plugged in for a week or two, then
check the PRAM settings again (may require a few restarts).
If this fails, the procedure to replace is a bit tricky but doable. Check
http://www.members.aol.com/dnmonk/instructions/instructions.html for very good
instructions, but get the replacement battery ahead of time. The 1400 uses the
same battery.

My 'new' 520c seems to have a dead pram battery - it keeps thinking
it's 2006 when I power it on. Is this something I'm gonna have to fix,
or will it just be a minor annoyance?

Re: PC cards

2004-08-10 Thread Shani, Naftali
Regardless of PC or not: 10/100 port will auto-negotiate with the far end of
your connection (hub, switch, router, modem) for the highest speed
connection.
If the other end and the media in-between are capable of supporting that
speed, and your build-in is not, then you stand to gain.

In general, unless otherwise specified, PCI (like many other card
interfaces) is not hot-swappable.

500 PRAM battery

2004-05-25 Thread Shani, Naftali
Question: the existing PRAM battery of the above PB (actually, a set of 2)
is a Panasonic VL2330 (Vanadium Pentoxide Lithium Rechargeable Batteries).
Any reason why these have to be rechargeable vs. 'ordinary' BR (or CR) 2330
which are also Li batteries, but non-rechargeable?

PB520

2004-05-10 Thread Shani, Naftali
OK, got my eBay purchase for $1.99: a PB520 (I guess it is a monochrome as
it doesn't have a 'c'?), and have a few questions:

1. It was advertised as missing the HD and battery. Glad to say that only
the battery compartments are empty, and there is a HD under the keyboard. My
question - will it work on the AC adapter alone?
2. Need recommendation/s on where to find battery/ies and AC adapter
3. Any further recommendations? I'll try to boot from a generic power supply
- any idea what is the pin out for the adapter?
4. Anything else I should be paying attention?

P.S. this PB will be used for simple word processing, so what is your
recommendation for a free word processing program that is M$ compatible?
