Re: Lombard Questions

2005-05-30 Thread Roger Volk (Contractor)

Dave,

This machine lacks the PRAM battery capacity to do a sleeping battery
swap on anything more than 384 mb, my processor had a bad L2 Cache gave
similar symptoms, no restart, L2 Cache parts are available from Daystar.

Roger

David Rodriguez wrote:

Morning all,

Been a long while since I've posted here. I just picked up a Lombard the
other day, of course it has problems but it's got enough good things
going to make it worth resurrecting. Good screen, dvd/rom w/ decoder,
fair battery, a 256 mb chip. It's got a new 20 gig drive installed w/
9.2.2.

The bad side, the motherboard was dead and no power supply. I've
borrowed a friend's failing L2 Cache G3 400 mobo for the weekend and
power supply, which is allowing me to play around with getting it set
up. But I'll eventually need to find replacements for both. It has a
256 and 64 mb Ram but hope to find another 256 of the right type that
will give me 512.

Problem: Will not restart. I can shut down and then start up, but
cannot simply Restart. Trying to do so requires use of the reset
button. Would this be indicative of a low pram batter, a bad L2 Cache,
or something else? With the inability to restart, I am having a little
trouble installing Jaguar too. I plan on moving up to Panther and
eventually using the firewire enclosure method to install Tiger, but
first things first.

I guess I'm also curious if anybody has been using a failing L2 cache
mobo long term? If so, how's that working out?

Other Question: Any guidance is appreciated in the search for the
appropriate type of low profile 256 Mb Ram Stick that will allow full
512 ram.

Thanks for any ideas,

Dave

Re: Re Rebuilding battery on 1xx PBs

Bob and Nils,
The battery cases are glued or heat fused together, I was able to break
the bond without destroying the case in one instance with a small metal
spatula after finding an area that was not fused and working slowly to
break areas that were fused, and in another case I accidentally dropped
the battery after removing the sliding door in prep for case separation
and the case parted cleanly. The Batteries are available new from BTI,
and I have a Lind external battery with adapter that will run my machine
for 4-5 hr.. This site has more info one the machine:

interesting sites.

Re: pram battery

2005-02-09 Thread Roger Volk (Contractor)
I also have 2 3400's with this symptom, and have replaced the power
supply board, keyboard, PRAM battery, as directed by the trouble
shooting matrix in the service manual, all to no avial. Both Books have
started to exhibit other symptoms of acute sleeping sickness or GLOD.
The failure is on the Main Logic Board, I can't help but think it's some
simple component as replacing the power manager chip on the logic board
did not produce a positive result, and lacking line drawings further
troubleshooting is problematic, labor charges further inhibit repair as
a diagnostic starts at $75.00.

Roger
The Real Seed Catalogue wrote:
Good answer but it begs the question: Where the heck do you find a
Pram battery? I've got a 3400c and finding replacement batteries (in
Toronto) is impossible. Additionally, any suppliers from Ebay or
elsewhere, have old stock with no guarantee offered on Prams that are
(at least) several years old. Does anyone know if these batteries can
be home-made from RS parts, then heat-shrunk and used? Seems like the
only alternative.

Have you tried Malcolm : [EMAIL PROTECTED]
He had these **new** at a very reasonable price last year. Can recommend
him without hesitation. SHips internationally too.

Alternatively you can get/make them, they are a varta battery. beware
there are 2 order codes, one has 6 cells in a stack the other has 3
stacks of 2 (if I remember correctly) You want the latter, though you
could of course cutshut the former into the same shape.

Worth knowing that replacing the pram batt on both of our 3400s did not
fix the problem of it losing everything if battery and power ever
removed at the same time. Susupect the power manager board myself.

able to help you out there... about the only person you'd be able to get
one from is anybody who had one on hand before Apple stopped shipping
parts for that machine (how long ago that was, I'm not sure). Finding
one new would probably be tricky, but there was a battery recall on this
unit, I believe, so there might be more of them floating around than
normal. I Googled a bit for third party batteries, but I came up empty.
I thought there was a company making them, but I was unable to find them.

I therefore appeal to someone on this list who might point me in the
right direction to where I might find such an extinct part :-)

I started liking the trackball when I first got my PowerBook 165.
Time passed, and I bought a 540c. It was love at first touch. I even
retired my Kensington Trackball for a while, and bought a lot of those
small external trackpads. Got a lot of ten very cheaply on eBay.
However, I returned to the Trackball in the desktops, and when my son

Using EXACTLY the same components (the only difference is the mobo -
same display, same PMU, same PRAM battery, etc), the 180 boots fine
but the 200 just has GLOD.

Any ideas? It seems most likely to me that something is wrong with

Re: 3400c troubles

2004-08-27 Thread Volk (contractor)
Andrew,
By all means replace the PRAM battery, a trouble shooting guide
I've used on 3400's calls out :
replace the PRAM battery, then the Power Supply Module, and last the
Logic board, after the usual series of resets and as a another member
mentioned leave it plugged in for a day or so and try the series of
resets after you replace the PRAM battery. A common problem with these
machines is a failure in the power control logic or path that I call
Acute Sleeping Sickness, because the first symptom is a failure to wake
up after sleep without a reboot. Good luck, these are great machines
and considering their low cost are well worth the effort to get them
running.

Andrew,
The battery total voltage is 7.5 -8.2 at full charge, is made up of
6 button cells whose designation I can't read as the pack I have here at

sound board and knowing 3400's perchant for power problems I would be
reluctant to jury rig anything.

Andrew Kershaw wrote:
Thanks for the suggestions.
What I'm hearing is that a PRAM battery with a low charge could cause
problems on the 3400c (certainly not surprising, especially given the
5300 experience). I am somewhat surprised that it could prevent
booting entirely - I've actually never seen a Mac where this is true
(even my 5300s will boot with a dead PRAM battery if you know the
right tricks - I can even manage this on a 6100), but I'm willing to
take your word for it! ;-)

Anyway, I'll leave the 3400c plugged in while I'm at work today and
see what happens this evening.

Assuming that the battery is dead (I can't test it w/ my voltmeter
because it's still boxed up somewhere - stupid boxes from the move!),
does anyone know what kind of cells it takes? Mine doesn't have the
VL2330 type cells common to earlier later PowerBooks - it's got a
pack of 6 smaller but thicker cells. The packaging says it's a NiMH
battery, too, which is surprising to me - all the others are
Lithium-based. Hmm, assuming I get the voltage right, do you think I
could just swap in a set of 2330s?

Peace,

The symptoms your machine is demonstrating sound like the start of

I have reset the PRAM, and the Power Manager. I have also replaced the Power

Re: G3 powerbooks explained?

2004-07-29 Thread Volk (contractor)
I've been chasing this one around for several weeks, and every site has
differences, one of the thing I noted on the wegner site is the picture
they show of a Kanga, does not look like what I have, my 3500 looks just
like a 3400 externally, and what is shown is something from the
Wallstreet on. What has worked for me was to check the various sites,
including Apple's and the specs listed on the bottom of the machine or
lacking a label, Mac System Profiler and use the combination and
concesus to classify the machine, and then if any upgrades have been
done all bets can be off.

AFAIK, there's nowhere you can buy New 'new' batteries for the 500
series. 'Neew' ones are old new stock, meaning they've been sitting on
shelved for years.

However, I believe this place http://nicdlady.com/laptop-a.htm sells
rebuilt batteries.

The best solution is to re-cell existing ones. The NiCad Lady, above,
also sells cells. I don't know if she sells them by the sea shore.

Re: PowerBook 3400c won't power on

2004-07-14 Thread Volk (contractor)
Adam,
I have 3 complete machines plus a logic board with similar symptoms,
in one case I was able to resurrect a machine by replacing the power
supply module, but in the 4 other cases the problem lay with the logic
board and probably on of 2 chips, the PMU chip, which is a low power
68000 series chip and is labeled, and the O'hare IO, and disc controller
which feeds the PMU chip. Currently the only source for logic board
components I know of is salvaged boards, by the power supply module
ought be available on the LEM list.

nothing on the screen. I set it down on a table and plugged it in, and did
command-control power, and it chimed and booted up fine. It wouldn't let me reset the
PRAM, however, and it didn't show the battery as charging. Then, while it was running
I removed the battery and it immediately shut down. I have since been unable to get
it to boot up again. One thing I've noticed is that the AC adapter doesn't get warm
at all, and the battery doesn't seem to charge. I'm thinking there's a chance it
might be the AC adapter, so I'm going to bring it to the Apple dealer and have them
test it with a different AC adapter...but if that's not it, any ideas? Maybe the
power manager circuit? And is it worth me trying to fix it for her (not sure how much
a new power manager circuit costs)? Afterall, it seems that 233Mhz G3's are going for
under $200 on eBay these days.
Thanks for any advice.

Re: Flaky 190/5300 AC adapter

2004-07-09 Thread Volk (contractor)
Craig,
In general the issue with the 5300 was the mother board jack that
was always coming loose, this may have caused failures of the adapters,
but the positioning problem is generally the logic board jack, I have
repaired these by scraping some of the insulation off the pads,
rebending the tabs to improve the mechanical connection, resoldering,
and then epoxying the jack to the board itself, this has to be done
prudently to avoid interfering with board mounting.

Roger
[EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
So, what is the deal w/ these things anyway? Are they prone to failure, or is
it just the ones I have?

I seems like 1/2 of the 190/5300 AC adapters I have EVER SEEN either do not
work at all, work if the cord is put into a particular position(!), or work for
a few minutes then stop.

Other than the few Apple made that can overheat, is this simply the worst AC
Adapter Apple made?

Other than that Sienfeldian rant, I am also wondering, since the
rock-steady AC adapters used from the Powerbook 1400/2400/3400/G3 is a 45W unit w/ a
different plug, have any of the more technical-minded out there ever tried to
graft a AC plug from a 3400 onto a 5300 mobo?

Just wondering...

the supply is not overheating. I have 2 other adapters, one a PB 3400

KG,

Believe the part you are actually seeking is the power supply board, the PMU
is actually a chip on the logic board. I have 3 machines with a similar problem
and used the same troubleshooting mechanism you did, without resolution. The
first machine I fixed, I did so by replacing the Power supply Board, the other 3
were no joy (the procedure we're using is also the same as recommended in the
Apple service manual).

Any reason why these have to be rechargeable vs. 'ordinary' BR (or CR) 2330
which are also Li batteries, but non-rechargeable?

Re: 3400c Sleep Hiccups

2004-05-07 Thread Volk (contractor)
Mark,

Reset the power manager(push the reset buton on the rear of the
machine),Zap the PRAM, Check the PRAM battery, Replace the power supply
board, kind of in that order, if none of these work, your 3400 is
developing sleeping sickness, the problem is the PMU chip ( a 68HC05) on
the main logic board, along with it's PMU functions:

The power management unit (PMU) is a 68HC05 microprocessor that
operates
with its own RAM and ROM. The PMU IC performs the following functions:
controls sleep and power on and off sequences
controls power to the other ICs
controls clock signals to the other ICs
 supports the ADB
 scans the keyboard
 controls display brightness
 monitors battery charge level
 controls battery charging

So when this chip starts to malfunction, it is time to replace the
logic board as I have been unable to find a source for the Apple programed
part andd have 3 units with the same problem.

Good Luck

On one occasion I have not been able to wake it up after sleeping it.
One one occasion I woke I woke it up, it went through the wake-up cycle

On a couple of occasions I woke it and it locked up.

All have occurred while on Mains Power with the battery in and for the

Does it need a Power Manager reset?

Re: PowerBook 3400 Problems

Bryan Walter wrote:

 Hi List,

I've recently acquired a PowerBook 3400c (200MHz model) which has quite
a number of interesting problems. I'm anxious to get new parts in it
and restore its health, but I'm not quite sure what's wrong.

First, the booting is sporadic. Sometimes it doesn't want to boot at
all, other times it will boot spontaneously when the AC adapter is
plugged in. Seems to me that it is some type of power problem, as the
OS can't get any solid reading on the battery or the battery time
remaining although the battery does work. While it is plugged in to
the AC power, there is also a high-pitched whining buzz that comes from
the PowerBook. It sounds like it is coming from right below the
trackpad, where the PMU board is located.

Also, there seem to be issues with the motherboard. It started out
that the PowerBook just won't make any sound whatsoever. No boot
chime, nothing. It doesn't make sound through external speakers either
or take a signal from a microphone that is plugged in (although the
internal mic seems to pick up sound fine). I started testing it one
day, and I discovered that the ADB, VGA, and serial also don't work,
and I presume the SCSI probably doesn't either although I don't have an
adapter to test it. Another interesting thing is that the modem most
definitely dials out and works, but the ethernet on the same card
 doesn't work at all.

All this has led me to believe that there is a problem with the PMU
board, and possibly with the motherboard as well. Trouble is, I don't
know where to find either part without paying through the nose so I
want to be sure what the problem is so I don't buy parts I don't need.
Anyone have any ideas or seen anything similar with another 'Book?

 Thanks,

 Bryan

(32-bit) cards, which would then work.

The Wallstreet was the 1998 G3 Series, and was the first PowerBook Mac
to have the same performance as its Desktop cousins (/233, /266 and
/300). This had 32-bit Cardbus slots, but not all vendors supported the
Wallstreet (the Easi PCI bus extender ... three PCI slots ... was one
Cardbus system which wouldn't work in a Wallstreet, but would work in a
 1999 or 2000).

You can also use an ADS Technologies USB card, which apparently will fit in
the stock PCMCIA case, or just trim the edges of a regular CardBus card and
install it that way. An inelegant solution, but it works...

Anyway, if you want to do it through MCE, the 2400 and Kanga can also be
made fully CardBus compliant by them. I think all they do is replace the
stock card cage with one spec'd for CardBus. I have a dead Wallstreet logic

First it was telling me there were problems with the HD, so I Disk

then Optimized the HD before trying again. On the retry, there were no
such problems, but after numerous PITA disk switchings and operations
which were taking quite awhile (though which seemed to proceed OK despite
the slowness), when I got to about Disk 4 in the installation set, it
finally told me it couldn't install the OS at all. Any idea why? I mean,
if a PB 190 can run up to 8.1, surely 7.6 should be okay, right?

anyone out there who can assist me in some way, or
 direct me to appropriate assistance?

I've been tinkering with it on and off for a year or
 so now with no luck.

Here's what happened just now. This is pretty typical
 of its behavior.

I pulled the Mac out of the bag, put in the battery,
pressed the power button, and nothing happened.

So, I plug it in to a power outlet. Immediately it
chimes, even before I open the lid. When I open the
lid, it has booted. The battery monitor says that the
 battery is full of charge.

After a moment, the screen goes black, and then random
horizontal lines flicker on the screen. Now, as I try
to power it on, it refuses to power on with, or
without the plug in the power outlet, or in the
 computer itself.

FYI, the battery is a new battery which I purchased
 specifically to make this work.

I'm totally comfortable with opening up the laptop and
tinkering with wires and plugs, and even soldering if
needed. Does anyone have any ideas?

The power management unit (PMU) is a 68HC05 microprocessor that operates

controls power to the other ICs
controls clock signals to the other ICs

Tom,

If you're looking at the top side of the motherboard there 2 large high
density chips near the center of the board, one of them is labeled PMU that is
the bad chip, I also have several bad 3400 logic boards with this same
problem, the primary symptom of the problem is usually that the computer won't
wake up, even after a hard restart, this is due to the multfunctionality of
the chip. I have been unable to locate a source for this part and since all
the boards I have are exhibiting the same symptoms part swapping is not a
solution.

Donn Haven Lathrop wrote:

Simply, no. Maybe, 7.5.3. Howsomever, 7.5.5 on my IIci--standard
extension set takes up 4 MB RAM, 7.5.3 on my PB 190, standard extension
set takes up 5 MB RAM. 7.1.3 on my PB 145b, standard extension set
except for Sticky Click, uses 1.4 MB.

 My PB 145b has max RAM--14 MB--and a 320 MB HD. It's still bog-slow.
I've had it online and it's sort of OK for e-mail, but really slow (even
with a Best Data 56K modem online at 50666) doing anything with a
browser. NN 2.2 is about the best you can hope for. NN 3 has a
horrible memory leak--needs about 24 MB assigned to it. NN 3.04 Gold is
a little better, but with the 1 bit screen graphics on Web pages are
 pretty bad.

RamDoubler definitely helps with everything if you only have 8 MB of
RAM, but you really wonder if it's worth it when you double-click on a
folder, and the wait-a-bit-watch appears as the folder opens.

Re: 540 screen fading to black in the corners

2004-03-04 Thread Volk (contractor)
Tricia,

This a common problem with older LCD screens and will worsen with age,
tiny amounts of moisture have pentrated the bond at the screen edge, and
there is no way to reverse the process. Replacement is the only solution
and I don't know about the compatability of the 540c screen.

 Hello,

I have a 540 with a screen that starts to fade to black in
the corners. When I first start it up, the screen is fine.
Then the corners start to turn black, a little at first,
then slowly creeping into the center. I haven't left it on
long enough to see if it completely blacks out, but it does
eventually reduce the visible screen to a circle.

 My questions:

Does this mean the screen is dying?

Is the only way to 'cure' it to replace it?

If I do have to replace it, is it possible to replace it
 with a 540c screen?

 My thanks for your help.

 Regards,
 Tricia Adams

Re: 160 display/monitor??

2004-03-03 Thread Volk (contractor)
Grace,

There are video cable connections in the area of the adjustment sliders
internal to the machine, the problem could also lie with the main interconnect
cable to the upper and lower halves of the machine. For directions on
disassembly go to http://www.academ.com/info/macintosh and go to the Powerbook
section. Other good info can be had from http://www.lowendmac.com/, MacFixit,
and The Mac Freak site. For Power Manager problems with this series of
machines http://www.westwind.com/reference/TN/PMreset.html has the info, in
fact you might want to try this first.

Good Luck :-)

Hey, I asked this before, but didn't see a reply (I might have missed it
 with problems with email phone).

I got a PB160 off ebay and the guy claimed it worked. After I finally got
the power cord (that he forgot to send the first time), I plug it in and
try to power up and I get noises but NOTHING on the monitor/display. The
monitor lights up and I can adjust the brightness/contrast sliders, but I
 can't see anything going on.

The guy I got it from doesn't seem to know anything about it, which is not
helpful. Is there some easy fix for this? Anyway to find out if it is
really working in there? Someone at husband's work suggested hooking it up
to a monitor, but I'm not sure I have the right cables...

Anyone have a suggestion about what to do next? I would really like to get
it working, but this is my first laptop and I don't have all that much
experience with hardware issues. My G3 and my Powermac 7100 were hoping
this would be another FUNCTIONING member of the family (the SE was working
until I stole the SCSI cable to hook up my scanner).

 TIA,
 grace :)

Re: Apple CD 300

2004-03-03 Thread Volk (contractor)
Grace,

I would imagin that someone on the LEM list hasthe adapter(HDI 30 to DB25
and cable DB25 to 50 pin centronix you'll also need 2 terminators 1 a pass
thru for 50 pin centronix as the SCSI device must be terminated on the input
and output.

I picked up an old external CD drive today but it doesn't have any cables.

IF I get this PB160 working, anyone know what cables (this PB to 50 pin
centronix SCSI??) I will need and where to find a driver that will work
 with the CD drive?

Any favorite source for SCSI cables, SCSI terminators??

 Thanks,

Re: PB 160 battery issue

2004-01-08 Thread Volk (contractor)
Bill,

Just finished dealing with a problem with exactly the same symptoms,
the cause was the board mounted pico fuse mounted on the logic board, next
to the battery contacts, replaced it and unit has worked fine every since.
I also isolated this problem on 2 other machines I bought on the LEM list.

Roger

alienbill wrote:

My 160 works for only a few minutes until it begins warning me that
the battery is low, and soon after shuts down. I have the AC adapter
plugged in all this time and thought I was using AC and not battery
power. When I remove the battery I get no boot up at all from the
 machine.

Are these things normal, or might there be a problem with my power
adapter? (I know the battery is low but thought that wouldn't be an
issue since I almost always use it plugged in). Might there be some
switch for changine from battery to AC power or is this automatic?

 Thanks for any suggestions

Re: 3400 and slow typing

2003-12-31 Thread Volk (contractor)
kaldav,

Zapping the PRAM and resetting the power manager certainly won't hurt and may
fix the problem, but the problem may lie with the low power 68XXX micro-processor
responsible for controlling the power and sleep modes as well as scanning the
keyboard, in which case the unit gradually cease to function, but by all means do
the resets.

Roger

kaldav wrote:

 Hello,
Could someone help to diagnose a problem on the powerbook 3400 where
one is typing into a program dialogue box or typing an email, (occurs
with different applications) but the typing letters appear very
slowly, long after the keys are pressed?
Does this sound like a zap the PRAM and re-set the Power Manager
 situation, or something worse?
I am not referring to the trackpad speed, but to the typing from the keyboard.
 Thanks
