PCMCIA NIC cards for 3400?

Looking for a NIC for an aging 3400. Any suggestions that aren't too
terribly expensive?

Thanks,

Hope.

if you have 3 of them, why not? what do you have to lose? make sure they're
supported under the distro you're going to put on them and go for it.

opera (for windows anyway) and mozilla both allow you to change the string

for win you just hit F12 and change it there (i usually browse identified as

you can also try using another browser like opera or mozilla...I haven't

windows 95 emulated...was Re: VirtualPC on 3400?

2002-06-14 Thread hope and the anchor

Actually it may be 4Megs that it needs...i have a boxed version around
somewhere I should look it up. I know it needs less than 8megs. You have to
keep in mind that win 3.1 was just a shell on top of DOS and that that win95
was meant to run on 486's (and higher end 386's) so it couldn't really
DEMAND a big memory footprint. It helped that back in 95/96 MS wasn't as big
a percentage of the market.

Hope.

Windows 95 *likes* all the ram you can give it, but all it *needs* is 2Megs.
Yes, really.

Maybe it needs more if it's being emulated, but Windows 95 on an x86 machine
only NEEDS 2mb.

Re: linux on mac

2002-06-13 Thread hope and the anchor

Mandrake 8.2 just came out for the ppc.
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/82ppc-announce.php3 has the announcement
and links to the downloads. Searching the mandrake support archives gives
you http://www.mandrake.com/en/archives/cooker-ppc/2002-03/msg00340.php
which kinda leaves me saying "uh" but that's an old message (dated march
19th) so there's probably another .iso available right now.
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ppcFAQ.php3 is the faq which states:

"1) What machines are supported?
Mandrake Linux 8.2 PPC has been tested on the iMac, iBook & PowerBook and
should work on any "NewWorld" Apple machines, including B/W G3s and G4s.
Support has been added for a number of "OldWorld" machines such as the 7600.

2) What are the system requirements?

At least 96MB of RAM is recommended with 2GB of *free* (unallocated) disk
space. "

so mandrake may not be the best choice for your 3400 (unless you've got a
pretty loaded 3400).

the other linuxes (linix?) that run on apples in general are

-linxppc -- probably the oldest linux for ppc's
-yellowdog linux (redhat based, so it's easy to get pre-compiled binaries
for.)
-gentoo linux -- basically it's a mix between linux and BSD, using the
"ports" system of package management. every user of gentoo i've heard from
is a raving fan of the distro.
-debian has a ppc port too (although debian has a port for pretty much
everything).

you can get .iso's of all of these distributions over at
http://www.linuxiso.org

http://www.yellowdoglinux.com/support/hardware/breakdown/powerbook.shtml
says YDL will run fine on a 3400.

Hope.

Re: OS9 on a PB 3400

2002-06-05 Thread hope and the anchor

I changed the settings (never sleep and all the extensions to mac os 8.1
all) and rebooted from the disk (holding C) and looking through the CD the
only directory that looks like it could possibly have the other installer
was the folder "system software" >> mac os 9 with the following in it: big
system morsels / install system software / install tome / system extras.

the obvious choise, install system software, informs me that it requires
version 4.5.3 of installer application. Any suggestions? My mac OS 9 disk is
supposed to arrive sometime next week it looks like but I'd really like to
get this thing running sometime this weekend. :)

Hope.

Re: OS9 on a PB 3400

thanks for your reply! there's a two CDs: one labelled "software install"
and one labelled "software restore". the install CD says version 9.0.4, so I
figured that would be the one I'm suppoed to use. I set the PB to never
sleep and changed the extension settings and booted from the CD with no
problems but when I launch the "Mac OS Installation" application it starts
and then goes to a "this software cannot be installed on your machine"
error.

should I be using the "software restore" CD instead of the "install" CD?

Hope.

OS9 on a PB 3400

2002-06-03 Thread hope and the anchor

Well, I realise this topic is a bit old, so just a quick question this time:
I ordered a full copy of OS 9 but was just today loaned a copy of the
restore software (including the OS 9.0.4 disk) that came with a friend's
iMac. Is this installable on my PB? If not, a follow up question: I know
that with some windows updates (e.g. the windows 98 upgrade disk) you only
have to remove a single file to make a "full install" copy. Can this be done
with this disk? I'm impatient to get OS 9 on my PB and play with it :).

be sure to set the extensions to "mac OS all" and to set it not to sleep.
the relevant apple page (about OS 8/8.1) mentions this but right inthe

I don't know if this is a stupid question, since I am new to macs in
general, but someone emailed me offlist (actually, several people, who were
all most helpfull -- thanks again!) and mentioned (as did others) that I
needed to buy the disk for 8.5 as well as 9.0, but they also kinda sorta
suggested that I could just install 9.0 straight off the CD from 8.1 and
skip upgrading to 8.5/6 -- is this correct?

It certainly *would* be nice if apple would just put a downloadable version
of 8.5/6 on their site, since they're quite clear on the "we don't sell it
or support it" aspect of it.

thanks again,

Hope

Re: question about music software

2002-05-07 Thread hope and the anchor

I am ideally looking for something to allow me to create/edit beats, a
simple drum machine program would be very nice. Anything else would be
gravy, really. I use several quite handy freeware music progs for wintel
machines (coagula, etc,) which would be very nice ot have on my 3400, since
it's the only portable computer I have readily available. Sorry if I wasn't
clearer in my original post; I am not looking for software to listen/burn
CDs or anything like that.

Hope

Re: BIOS? and Mac?

2002-05-02 Thread hope and the anchor

In regards to this, I'm planning on installing one of the PPC linux distros
on my 3400c. I would ideally like to repartition my disk and give both
MacOS9 and Linux (i'm leaning towards Gentoo (http://gentoo.org) or maybe
also SuSE PPC (http://suse.com) but I haven't made a concrete decision yet;
any advice, or pros/cons w/r/t specific distros and the 3400c would be
appreciated).

But my more immediate question is: How would I go about repartitioning?
Also, do apples boot off CD drives/floppy drives automatically?

Hope

Re: set up of 98lite for Virtual PC

2002-04-27 Thread hope and the anchor

98 lite (i think the page is www.98lite.net) is basically win98se that you
can strip down to bare essentials (e.g., you can take Internet Explorer out
of the OS and use it as a regular component or install a different browser.)
I don't know about changing the 98 shell for the 95 shell; I know you could
switch 95's for 3.1/3.11 but I don't know if that's the case for 98/95. You
may want to check http://www.annoyances.org for that.

Hope.

nota bene that the calling the BSA in can be an unbelievable pain; try to

Re: [OT] Re: Need help with DSL/Airport/Router

2002-04-26 Thread hope and the anchor

if it's a linksys then leave the username blank and type admin as the
password (or maybe the other way around, i'm not sure now.) if you changed
it from the default (above) you can reset it on the router itself by
pressing in the reset button with a paperclip or toothpick or whatever.

hope.

help with ethernet connection for PB3400c

2002-04-26 Thread hope and the anchor

Hi.

I recently picked up a powerbook 3400c and the previous owner -- I don't
know how/why -- ripped out the ethernet/modem it came with. The back of the
machine is just has a hole going into the laptop's case. I have a pcmcia 56k
modem, but would rather be able to connect it to my home LAN to transfer
files etc. I've searched around online, since I'm new to apples in general
(although I am experienced w/ PCs) and can't find any good places that have
either the replacement ethernet/modem or a PCMCIA ethernet for it. Can
anyone give me a recommendation/hint as to where I can get a replacement for
this?

Also, it's running OS 8; I'd like to upgrade it to OS 9, but haven't been
able to find any info on whether or not the machine can take os9. I don't
have the discs, so I'd have to buy them and would rather know if I should
even bother before doing that.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Hope.
