5300 options new topic
I have 5300 with a i90 color screen, 32 meg of ram, 500 meg hard drive, video adapter, scsi adapter, Ethernet/modem card. I will be using it for general educational purposes including wp. Ss and internet browsing and email' I have ram doubler 9 and speed doubler 8 and 8.1 installed Are 7.6. 8.5, 8.6, better? Why or why not? What software and utilities should I try to get and load? What is a real life expectation of life on a good nimh batter for this unit? What bout wireless and usb2 adapters? Any thing else I should know or do? I also have another color 5300 with 24 meg and a 190 with 24 meg same questions. I'm not expecting everyone to answer everything; jump in where you want. Is fwb is a scsi drive utility. The 5300 and 190 use internal IDE HD's. Your zip may run off of scsi? I was thinking of pulling it out and since its IDE hook it up to my pc and format it, but again I need some help disassembling the system. Rehabbing 190 and 5300. Looking for screen and various advice
I'm rehabbing a 190 and a 5300 and can use help. Right now we are using 7.6.1 on both. Plan to move up to 8.0 on 190 and 8.5 on 5300. Both have 2rmeg ram installed with RamBoubler 9 and SpeedDoubler 8.1 installed. Primary use will be word processing (both have Appleworks 4 and web when on road we have a PCMCIA card with 2800kb modem and 10 mg Ethernet. We switched displays to put color on the 5300. The other screen (black and white/grayscale has a small tear inside screen on right edge. WE ARE LOOKING FOR A COLOR DISPLAY TO PUT ON THE 19O. DOES ANYBODY HAVE ONE OFF A MACHINE THEY USE FOR PARTS? Also what type of browsers for 7.6 8.0 and 8.5 and where to get them? Also other suggestions as to software and hardware would be appreciated. I am aware of the various issues with these Powerbooks but I got them dirt cheap, have limited expectation and I'm not spending much. I get that sound on my pb 1400 when I had a bad battery installed. When I replaced it I never herd it again. Try running without the battery installed to see if the same results happen. Just got a 1400/166 that is great except for one problem. When it first arrived, pushing the on/off button resulted only in a slow tick from the speaker. Pushing the reset button started it right up. A couple more tries and the slow tick has been replaced with silence and a reset is still needed. The computer will not respond to any keys including on/off to wake from sleep but reset wakes it up. When the comp is running, pressing the on/off which should bring up the Shutdown dialog, does nothing. The comp runs perfect in all other ways. I thought it might be just the physical key but the original tick rules that out. I suspected the Pram battery, but there are no other symptoms I know of. Maybe there doesn't need to be. Tried it on a PC..multiple pcs linked together to render 3d stuff.Never tried on a mac. Why on mac? The os is already pretty cool.
