2001-10-10 Thread tbrock

Thanks so much to all of you regarding extra storage for our 2300c. I'll
let you know exactly how we fare after the new harddrive install on our
7300! Thomas & The Kinders

storage for backing up 2300c

2001-10-08 Thread tbrock

I thought I had enough offline storage for backing up our 2300c, but
that is not the
case.

How difficult is it to drop in another harddrive for our 7300? Does the
unit have to
be SCSI, ATA, or IDE, EIDE,? Another 5 gigs would probably do it. Does
anyone have
something like this to sell? Thanks for your replies! Thomas & The Kinders

DISK Images; What are they?

2001-10-03 Thread tbrock

Regarding system install disks, what are disk images? Also, why stop at
8.1 for powerbooks as "recent" as the 3400's? It seems like some
p-bookers are running operating systems into the nines.

Thanks for your replies! Thomas & The Kinders

2300 Minus Word Processing

2001-09-25 Thread tbrock

Thanks Remy!

I've been out in the Alaskan bush for too long. I'll bet I'm the only
guy who does not know that the upscale powerbooks do not come with a
word processor. Now let's see if I have it right: If I was able to
purchase one of the 3-4 thousand dollar powerbooks, they would not have
a word processor on them? Is this just a Mac thing? If so, it makes it
much easier for people to buy the Windows books. I guess you learn
something new everyday.

I've got Appleworks 5.03 on my home desktops. Can I transfer it to the
2300? I don't have it on disk, but these came with my computers. Is it
legal to do this since I am the owner? Also, how would I do it? I have
some zip drives and syquest units that I could scsi up to the 2300. I'm
not sure what exactly folders I would need to transfer.

Thanks, Thomas & The Kinders

2300c Minus Word processing

2001-09-25 Thread tbrock

We acquired a nice 2300c for our kindergarten room. I've worked with
Macs for some years but am still learning the specifics of this
notebook. It came with 8.6 and a ton of extra software. I can't believe
it but I can find no word processing program??? There is no Clarisworks,
no Appleworks, no Microsoft Word, no Nissus Writer... nothing, zip,
nada. Can this be done? Can you install system software and not install
the default word processor?
With all of the programs on this thing (I was told it was used in
corporate business), I can't imagine it not having a word processor !?
Please excuse the rant, I just didn't expect this. Anyway, I have OS 8.5
on CD. Is there any way to put Clarisworks on this 2300? I'm assuming
that 8.5 has some sort of default word processor on it.

Your replies are sincerely appreciated,

Thomas & The Kinders

8.6 upgrade for 2300c and lab macs

2001-09-19 Thread tbrock

I downloaded the 8.6 system upgrade as all of you recommended. There
were 2 options:

1. sm bin or
2. multiple parts

As i was not sure which to check, I set the school's lab mac to download
over night. When I returned the next morning, both downloads were there
on the desktop, but not completed. There was a message that said "a disk
error occured". I check the harddrive and there was still plenty of room
left.

Anyway, I checked the downloads and found that 1 set had 12 parts and
the other downloads were 2 parts of sm bin. I tried to open them up to
see what they do and upgrade the lab mac. The message I then got was:
the application that created could not be found. I checked the
school's lab mac and discovered that it only had OS 8.1

1. Are these downloads intact?
2. Must your current system be running 8.5 for these to open?
3. Which do you install or is better- 12 parts or sm bin?

Stumped in Alaska,
Thomas & The Kinders

2300c in Kindergarten Room

2001-09-15 Thread tbrock

Our "new" 2300c has a new home in our kindergarten room. As the new
"kid" in the class, it has to adjust
to it's new environment. Kids I can help, but with this 2300 I need the
professionals: YOU! Here are the
"problems."

1. The 2300c has 48megs of RAM and came with OS 8.6 on the harddrive
(750 Megs). The latest
software CD we have is 8.5.Can we "downgrade" to 8.5 so that the
software is compatible and most
importantly "reloadable" in the event of system crashes and the like?

2. Got all set to hook this unit to our school's network and our
computer person says that he can't do it
because the TCP/IP is password protected. Because of this, he says he
can't assign the 2300c an IP
address. He thinks we would have to completely dump the old software
and reload system software again.
I checked the configrations and found the following:

AltaVista Free Access
colba
colba2
MacSRP Ethernet
MacSRP LocalTalk/ARA
non-MacSRP unsupported
sprint
vi
Videotron

I've never seen this much "stuff" in a TCP/IP folder before. What is it
and can I get rid of it?

3. I'd like to see if the internal modem works. It has Free PPP 2.6.2
loaded on the harddrive. When I open
the

FreePPP or OT/PPP is not selected in the TCP/IP Control Panel. When I
click on the Open PPP
Connection on the right side of the menu bar (the little telephone
icon), I get this message: You must
select either to continue. Funny thing is, I don't see Free PPP in the
control panel options like I
normally do. Our other computers have this. They run 8.5.

4. Got ready to send you this message and just noticed that this 2300c
has on the harddrive: System 7.5.3,
8.5, and 8.6.
Is there any reason to have 3 systems on such a small harddrive. Doesn't
this take up huge amounts of
harddrive space? Can I reinstall 8.5 and dump the other 2?

5. This machine has Code Warrior on it. What is it, do I need it, can I
get rid of it?

I'm sorry for the long post, but we are in rural, remote Alaska. Our
closest Mac tech is 350 airmiles away
in Anchorage. And he does not work for our school.

Thanks for any and all replies.

Sincerely,
Thomas & The Kinders

This 2300c is a great little machinek! I just need help in getting it to
work up to it's full potential.

Ethernet for 2300c

2001-09-05 Thread tbrock

Is it possible to connect a 2300c to our school's network. The unit I'm
getting has a duo dock with the modem pass through only. Thanks for your
reply.
