Re: 1400 'upgrade' tips wanted - from a new user

2005-04-22 Thread Grant Baxter
I don't want to sound like an advertisment, but I cover all of these
points, except not really any focus on Ram Doubler other than to
mention it exists, in my PowerBook 1400 FAQ. The FAQ is free to read
online, and can be found here:

http://www.freshfiltered.com/MacFAQ/PB1400FAQ.html
In short,
-using Compact flash cards
Very good idea. I do this - runs completely silently and doesn't seem
any slower than hard disk.

-using a ram disk
Not worth the effort. Instead, get a fast compact flash card and boot
off that

-using OS 8.6, 9 (.1 and 2.2) and OS X (maybe somebody got this far...)
8.6 is great. I use 9.1. 9.2.2 is the same as 9.1, but with some extra
code to allow more recent machines to run it. OS X - currently
impossible

-Linux based OS'
Not a good idea due to the Nubus architecture. Nothing really works, at
least nothing other than ancient mklinux.

-External batteries
Best bet is to recondition an existing battery, and then run off a CF
card as you will use a lot less power. I get 1.5-2 hours doing this.

-Ram Doubler
Good if you can get it, but really, the built in virtual memory is fine.
-any other extremely cool things one can do, without knowing it.
(besides
Wifiying, please)
You can add a G3 card (I did), empty out an old dead battery and use it
as a space saving module in the CD drive slot, you can go wifi (which
you don't want to) and broadband, get Mozilla (WaMCom), and so on.

Dear powerbook users,

Understanding that this list exists since 1997, I'm offering the option to
mail me back, as maybe some people in the list have heard this ideas over

Looking forward to your response!

 Subject: PCMCIA Ethernet card-drivers?

 Powerbook Power Users,

The internal ethernet card isn't working on my 3400c.
The problem seems to be the main logic board, not the
Ethernet card, so I decided to buy an Ethernet card
for the PCMCIA slot. I bought a used 3Com 3CCFEM556B
10/100 LAN modem card and can't get it to work.

I'm discovering now that I need a driver for a PCMCIA
card. Is this correct? When I consider which Ethernet
card to get, do I need to make sure that I only buy
one that includes a Mac driver? (I did discover a Mac
driver for another 3Com card, but doesn't work with
 this one)

Same thing for a PCMCIA card for wireless internet
access, I need to find a brand/model with a Mac
 driver, correct?

USB card, I also need that the card comes with Mac
drivers (or can download) Is this correct?

One additional item, my indicator for the Battery
Life Remaining isn't showing up. Is that an
extension? What is the name of it?

 Thank you,
 Bill

 Hi Bill.

For your EtherNet card, look for a Farallon EtherMac PCMCIA Ethernet card.
They come up all the time on ebay, run about $10. Drivers are available on
my web site for them, or drivers are available here.

 http://www.proxim.com/support/all/maccard/software/index.html

You will want the one with the Red Arrow on the front of card (model
595a).
This is the later version and more compatable. There is one with a Blue
Arrow on the front, and it will work, but I have only used the 595a model.

By the way, this card was made by 3Com, so if you have a 3Com dongel, it
will work with this card. Its 10baseT, but with the approiate 3Com dongel,
you can connect to a Thinnet or Thicknet network if nessary.

For your PCMCIA Wireles card, my web site will have tons of information on
cards that are compatable with your PowerBook. If you are running OS 8.6
or
above, you can use the Apple Airport drivers v1.3.1. and a compatable
card.
Their is a list of Airport Compatable cards on my wireless FAQ site.
Otherwise, any Orinoco compatable card will be useable.

The Skyline card is also a good choice, but only if you dont have the need
for 128 bit WEP. It only supports 64 bit WEP.

For a USB Card, I have used the early Belkin (USB v1.1 only) with the
Apple
drivers. Others should be able to guide you on this topic as I don't have
 you model of PowerBook.

For a shareware battery tools check out http://www.kezer.net/

Dear powerbook users,
I'd like to ask the people who have 'messed around' with their pb 1400 for
advice concerning how to make battery life last longer. Also I'd like to
have some advice concerning
-using Compact flash cards
works great. With a little fiddling you can even boot from one.

-using a ram disk

I don't bother, not enough RAM on these things.

-using OS 8.6, 9 (.1 and 2.2) and OS X (maybe somebody got this far...)
9.1 works great for me (1400 with a G3). 9.2 might work, OS X- never IMO.
-Linux based OS'
Exist but last I looked was missing support for major things- floppy
for sure, maybe sound? and stuff like that as well. Not very well
supported unless something new has come out.

-External batteries
Would be fun, 24V DC needed though, plus a connector from a dead 1400 P/S.

-Ram Doubler
I used a little with 8.6 but I think 9.1 has issues, does just as
well with disk-based virtual memory, or both.

-any other extremely cool things one can do, without knowing it. (besides
Wifiying, please)
3com 589 series ethernet PC Card can be found for $10 and works well,
with a patch of the free Farallon drivers (same chipset on both
cards, but the Farallon is still kinda expensive for what it is).

Wifi is still real cool, guess you know about that :)
The G3 accel. is a life saver.
20gig or bigger laptop IDE drives are cheap and work really well,
providing a speedup just in the faster HD times than in the stock
model.

My main powerbook is still my 1400/G3/60 RAM/20gig drive. I'm
starting to thing about getting an older TiBook though due to poor
browser support for the 1400/9.1, and some web sites are starting to
have problems. Ebay for one, some people have problems with paypal,
and my bank just updated their pages and I can't do that from my
powerbook anymore, last I checked.

I'd do the HD for sure, if you want to make a big commitment, RAM and
G3 are about equally important upgrades. Without a G3, I'd think
about staying with 8.6 myelf, depends on your patience.

HTH.

Upper limits of the 1400's memory makes a RAM disk pretty problematical.

I run 7.6.1, I think, in mine. I don't use it for much, but basics - I
don't even surf the web with it. Interestingly, my 1400c running 7.6.1
crashes less than my 3400c with 8.5. Unless there is something you
really need, I wouldn't use anything above 8.5. The 1400 won't support
9.2.2, that I am aware of. Stops at 9.1.

PPC 603e doesn't support OS X. You have to put in a G3 accelerator card.
-Linux based OS'

Yellow Dog Linux has a hell of a package. I have no experience with YDL
on a 1400, but, in theory, it could be a good alternative for this
machine. Older machines are, typically, less well supported. Eventually,
I will put YDL on my 3400c.

-External batteries

I would be interested to know how these work, now, and other people's
experiences with them, too.

-Ram Doubler

Ram Doubler, the application, is redundant with System 7 virtual memory.
The more virtual memory you turn on, the more the machine has to hit the
hard drive for data, the slower the computer will - generally - run.

With virtual memory, it seems other apps step on the system heap and
crash the computer more often. My policy has always been, Buy as much
hard RAM as possible. OS X handles virtual memory swap files better
than any consumer OS I have experienced. Compared to OS X, the way all
preceding versions of the system handle memory and swap files pales in
comparison. Gotta love protected memory and pre-emptive multitasking.

-any other extremely cool things one can do, without knowing it. (besides
Wifiying, please)
Keep it simple. Don't use apps that are memory hogs. Get a copy of Word
5.1. Enjoy it. It's a nice computer for what it is.

With the OS 9.2.x hack installers, you can get 9.2.x installed on a 1400,
but for 9.x of any sort, a G3 is recommended.

OS X won't presently work on *any* NuBus machine, even one with an
aftermarket G3 (including the 1400).

Strongly disagree. Apple VM before OS X is an absolute dog and dreadfully
inefficient as far as speed and HD utilitization. OTOH, RD uses compression
and reallocation techniques so the hard disk needs to be hit less, and
requires less HD space when it *does* hit the HD, to boot. RD9 was a great
upgrade for my 1400 and is a significant improvement over Apple VM.

Incidentally, my roadwarrior 1400 was a 1400cs/117 which has been turned into
a c screen with a G3/333, 60MB RAM, external video option, 3Com 3C589
Ethernet PCMCIA NIC and BestData 56K modem running OS 9.1 with RD9. Wonderful
machine.
