You can transfer to Palm via IrDA but AFAIK the 1400 doesn't support
it. I just set it up (you have to install a few files on the Palm,
at least on my Palm) and it works fairly well. It's kind of weird
having to get to the HotSync app in Palm, starting the hot sync
process and then turning the Palm around and putting it behind the
laptop.

Because they wanted to include IR connectivity in their PowerBooks.

IrDA didn't exist, simple because IR was new to notebooks, and Apple had
their standard networking protocol, AppleTalk.

Other IR devices (was: Re: 1400 battery and infrared)

2002-12-09 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Yeah, I don't know why Apple ever bothered developing IRTalk anyway.
It ONLY works with other 190/5300/1400/2400/3400/Kanga/Wallstreets or
with the Farallon serial port IR-LocalTalk transceiver. Besides,
it's a terrible idea for networking... LocalTalk (same speed as
IRTalk, btw) is far more reliable and robust.

To talk to most PDAs (Newtons included) your book has to do IrDA. No
PDAs (that I know of, anyway) support IRTalk. IRTalk is PowerBook
only (with the Farallon exception).

So called "other IR devices" probably use IrDA. I don't know about
the HP line of infrared printers - they might do IRTalk, but I doubt
it... But talk about a niche market

Peace,
Drew

Yes, I've often wondered if the newer Macs (G4 and all that) are compatible
with the IR features of things like Palm units (with the Palm software
installed, of course). Palm doesn't support IR transfer for my 1400cs, or
so they said (I have Palm III series units anyway -- just call me the retro
lounge!). I wish I knew a way around this. It would be so much more
convenient than all the extra cables and cradle. *sigh*

Oh, excuse me. I didn't realize you were replying to the line
>as we've never been able to get our machines, both 1400cs, to communicate

In that case, maybe I can give you (Aly) some tips and see if what
you do and what I do are the same.

Set AppleTalk to "Infrared Port (IRTalk)" on both machines.
- of course, make sure AppleTalk is active
Point the books at each other, about 3 feet apart, so that their
infrared windows are directly across from and pointed at each other.

(If you only want to transfer files, do the following:
Launch "Apple IR File Exchange" on both of your 'books. It should be
in the Apple Extras folder
The opposite book's name should appear in each book's IR Sender window.
Drag and drop files to the icon for the other book to transfer them.)

Turn on File Sharing on whichever machine you want to access
remotely/wirelessly (or both, if you want to do it both ways)
- Note that unless you log in as the owner of that computer, you will
have to define a shared folder or volume...
Open the Chooser.
Using "AppleShare," click on the name of the book you want to access.
Type in your user name/password as applicable, select the shared
volume, and hit "Ok."
Navigate to the remote files. Ta da, you are done.

Easy-peasy.

Peace,
Drew

No.

The 1400 does IRTalk only. The G4 does IrDA only. The two do not
communicate with each other via infrared. PowerBooks 2400 through
Wallstreet do both protocols, however.

Besides, infrared is slow, prone to interruption, finicky, and
generally a poor choice for transferring large amounts of data,
especially when you are rushed.

Trust me, ethernet is by far the superior transfer mechanism. You
could always revert back to a sneaker net of some sort

Peace,
Drew

That's interesting -- the battery part. Did you buy a new one or a
reconditioned old one? I'm interested simply because my original one won't
work for longer than 16 minutes or so -- even with the "reconditioning"
program (run a number of times, under 7.6.1 and 8.1). I have hesitated
buying a new (read: expensive) replacement battery because I've heard even
they usually only last an hour or so. I'll be interested to see what other
people on the list have to say about batteries (well, and about the IR too,
as we've never been able to get our machines, both 1400cs, to communicate
that way!) Great phrasing, BTW, "must be some other voodoo" I only wish
that were the case! It would save money! =-)

1400 battery and infrared

2002-12-08 Thread pixelbird
Hello list,

I have a 1400c/OS 8.6 with 1 main problem and 1 wish:

1) The battery will not go for more than 20 min. even with
everything cut back to bare minimums. I bought it to replace
the previous one which won't even hold enough to complete a
boot.

I tried recycling the battery, zapping the PRAM, etc. Must
be some other voodoo. Ideas?

2) I wish I could use the infrared with my G4/OS 9.1. That
would avoid having to find the ethernet plug, etc. when I'm
rushed.

Are there any known solutions?

TIA,
Ken N.
