I think there may be four or more. My 5300cs has 16Mb of RAM onboard and i
think it only has 512K VRAM - it couldn't drive a 5300c screen at
640x480x16, only 640x400x16.

I'm very sure the B&W board is the same as the cs one, too.

I think the 190/190cs only has the one possible mobo?

Look at the top, look at the bottom.

The lowest of the low (5300cs ?) have no chips on the top surface, one large
chip on the bottom and four small chips on the bottom.

The biggest and the best (the 5300ce, for sure) has one large chip on the
bottom and four small chips on the bottom and one large chip on the top and four
small chips on the top.

The intermediate models have one large chip on the bottom and four small
chips on the bottom and four small chips on the top, IIRC.

I've taken apart more 190s and 5300s than I care to think about.

Best low-cost "road Apple" I've found, however.

Er, sorta. There's at least 3 different 5300 motherboards. One has 8MB of
RAM and 512kB of VRAM, one has 8MB of RAM and 1MB of VRAM, and one has 16MB

Re: 190/5300 displays

2003-09-21 Thread Andrew Kershaw
I believe there are two color 5300 logic boards ... one supports a TFT with
640x480 (5300c), or less, while the other supports 800x600 (5300ce).
Er, sorta. There's at least 3 different 5300 motherboards. One has
8MB of RAM and 512kB of VRAM, one has 8MB of RAM and 1MB of VRAM, and
one has 16MB of RAM and 1MB of VRAM (this one is usually 117MHz).
That means that there are three different boards capable of
displaying color, one of which can only do 256 colors at 640x480
(16bit at 640x400). The other two can both do thousands (16bit)
color at either 640x480 or 800x600, depending on which screen is
installed.

There are VRAM chips on both sides of the logic board, and the 5300ce has all
locations stuffed.
As a matter of fact, there are places on the logic board for four small RAM
chips and one large RAM chip on the bottom and also on top, and the various
models of machines have different combinations of small and large chips,
Right. There are pads for 8MB of RAM on top, 8MB on the bottom and
512kB of VRAM on top, 512kB of VRAM on the bottom. They usually get
filled from the bottom up.

Peace,
Drew

The 5300ce screen will not work in the 190

he can plug a different display into whatever
logic board he has. All PBs 190/5300 have the same logic board connector,
so while each different LCD type's cable is unique, all cables share the
same type logic-board-end connector.
Yes! I tried and realized that **any** 5300 can use **any** display.

Now the problem is:

I have a non working (bad logic board) 19 and a
working 5300ce whose screen does not work (I can
only use the external monitor).

Since the screen appears to be ok I wanted to try
to put the 5300ce screen and its logic board into
the 190.

So the question is:

can I use the 190 display cable? If not where can I find one?

Thanks, guys!

Ben

PS. What about the the PB 100 list? I cannot get to re-subscribe.

I'm positive that any 190/5300 can use a B/W or color passive display.

However (IIRC) only a 5300 logic board with 1MB vram can use a TFT
display. Hmmm, _do_ I recall that correctly? Anyone, anyone . . . ?

Very true that each LCD type uses a specific cable, but I'm gonna guess
that Beniamino asks if he can plug a different display into whatever
logic board he has. All PBs 190/5300 have the same logic board connector,

190/5300 displays

2003-09-20 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
As I learnt that the screens are interchangeable
between 190/5300 gray, color, acive or passive
matrix, now I would like to see whether I can
replace a dead TFT 5300 screen with a new one.

The problem is that the only good case I have is a PB 190 one.

The cable that connects the LCD to the logic
board is the same for B/W and color 190/5300
displays?
