Just FYI, Thad (and because a little while ago you said you were new to the
list) that LEM article was based on postings to *this list* by various
brilliant and inventive members (not me!) (along about Sept or
thereabouts). If you want more detail you might search the archives.

It was much faster than using the original 1400 2 gig drive, since I've put
a 5400 rpm travelstar 20gig in it I use the flash card when I want to work
with large format images in photoshop. For day to day web browsing and email
I just use the HD.

It is great though when you need more VM than you can safely do (By safely
I'm referring to the Apple suggested retail price of setting VM to less than
half the installed ram, or whatever that figure is) or when you are running
off of battery.

There is a good article on it at LEM. That's where I learned about it.

No, you need a PCMCIA adapter (I have one that reads 4 different types of
flash card). USB on a Powerbook 1400 is impossible. Sorry to break it to you

Thad,

What type of flash memory are you using?? I have an adapter card I use to
access a Sony Memory stick (Seeing as USB isn't available). But the transfer
rates from the memory stick are slw. I checked the packaging on the
flash card, and sure enough, the read/write speeds are quite low (something
like 300KB/sec if I remember)

Obviously, using virtual memory on the HD would be much faster, albeit with
more power use... I hear that compact flash are faster, but still not great.
Have you noticed a drop in speed compared to the HD?

I have not, mostly because I'm concerned about the limited number of write
cycles before the card wears out. Anyone actually hit the wall on this?
Right now my 1400 sees a fair amount of use, and in 9.1, I imagine it is
hitting virtual memory quite a bit.

FYI, Sonnet is clearing out the 333MHz 1400 G3 upgrades, I picked mine up a
few weeks ago for $157 (US). Well worth the money. My 1400 feels in line
with the clamshell iBooks now.

Yes, I'm very fond of my 1400 as well. It has a nice keyboard and form
factor, parts are relatively easy to get (by comparison), and with a G3
upgrade they're speedy littke monsters. My only complaint is the RAM max.

Greetings!
I am a brand new powerbook owner. Not a brand new owner of a brand new
powerbook, however. I've taken the short money route and purchased a
1400c on ebay for less than $200, and spent more than that for a G3 upgrade.

I love this little machine! So much, I bought another for a spare.

Is this list high volume? I'm wondering, coz I already belong to a
photographer's list that does over 100 posts a day, and I don't think my
mailbox can hold too much more mail
