There's not huge point in stocking up on multiple Lithium batteries-
their total capacity will degrade to 50% of original in 2 years
whether you use them or not.

Subject: 3400c Li-Ion Battery?

I have one that seemed to have discharged itself and
now won't charge. All 4 green lights come on however.
Is it a gonner or is there a chance to save it?
Wouldn't charge in a dual charger either. It tries to
charge but seems to give up after about 10 seconds.
Same thing happens in the Powerbook.

Thanks

Li-Ions give you very few options. They can develop a digital memory
if you have rarely let the battery run down. The fuel gauge computation
needs to be updated as the battery ages, but if you've mainly kept the
PB on the charger, then the updating hasn't happened. A few complete
charge/discharge cycles will fix that, if that is indeed the problem.

Re-celling is hard to do. Because it's dangerous, you can't buy loose
cells on the open market. If you do find some, just be careful. Don't
solder to them (spot weld the battery connections), or you're risking
rapid uncontrolled disassembly. This is *not* an operation for the
casual hacker.

As for shelf life, Li-Ion batteries are famous for eating themselves
whether they're in use or not. So stocking up on a lot of them is likely
to lead to some disappointment down the road. To maximize shelf life,
most manufacturers recommend charging to a level of about 40%. If too
high, self-eating occurs. If too low, ordinary self discharge may take
the cells down to the point where another protective circuit kicks in
and prevents charging altogether.

Good luck, and be very careful!

Interesting factiod you mean? LiIon batteries have been around for a
while, this has come up once or twice on any forum I've viewed,
especially camera and PDA forums I guess.

http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm

is one good spot; the wikipedia entry for LiIon is pretty good.
Googling finds others.

Basically:
LiIon batteries lose capacity over time whether you use them or not;
storage condition makes a difference. 50% charged and cool helps a
lot for storing, so if you have a spare battery that you don't use
much that is a good thing to try for.

for the battery you are using, it's best to keep it topped up rather
than letting them go totally down.

HEAT IS BAD for all batteries, but it has a marked effect on LiIon.
It's a good thing to keep them cool at all times you can manage. So
take that iPod out of it's protective case when charging, don't
charge your laptop when it's on the sofa, put it on the wood table, etc.

Replies I got from makers of replacement LiIoon batteries when I was
buying spares indicated 50% loss of max capacity after 2-3 years
wether they are used or not; so stocking up on many spares was not
recommended, even by the guys who made the batteries I was buying
(www.laptopsforless.com, battery for my Sony Clie UX-50 -I highly
recommend these guys for batteries for many devices).

HTH.

Also, there's a electronic component on each cell that ends up
optimizing that cell, is my casual understanding, and it's next to
impossible to get naked batteries with that component assembly on the
consumer market. It's not just like getting a NiMH cell or 6 and DIY.

There are good resellers of assembled packs for most applications;
not sure about old PB battery innards but I expect someone somewhere
has figured out the form factor.

This might sound silly, but have you considered that it's fully charged?

If all 4 lights come on, that generally indicates that the battery is
fully charged. If all 4 lights come on indicating a full charge, you
try to run your Mac from it, and moments later your Mac goes to
sleep, then you probably have a battery that is close to death.

gives up trying to charge the battery.. But I pulled
the charger cord anyway and a popup came on right away

I'd say you ought to just buy a new battery.
They are less than $10 each brand new.

Yep, that sounds like a Li-Ion battery that has reached the effective
end of it's charge-recharge life. Li-Ions may not have a memory
effect, but they do have a limited number of charging cycles. When
they get to the end of their life, they die a lot like this.

If all 4 lights come on, that generally indicates

Getting that type of battery apart isn't easy. To make matters
worse, recelling a Li-Ion battery is non-trival. You have to find
cells with exactly the same specs for the intelligent battery charger
in your PowerBook to charge it without making it explode or catch
fire.

Not joking at all. I once bought a lot of 2 NEW Li-Ion Batteries for
$18 including the cost of shipping on e-Bay. They are very cheap
