Again, yes, unless you have graphics turned off.

Frank p'bookers,

Try WannaBe http://mindstory.com/wb2/ for a plain text (graphic
free!) browsing experience and iCab http://www.icab.de/dl.php is a
pretty good little browser (in perpetual Beta?) that works well on
these older machines with a few glitches and crashes on more complex
web sites. ICab can also be set to not allow certain graphics (like
banners or giant pictures).

I think that Netscape Communicator 4.7x (I think .78 or .79)
http://wp.netscape.com/download/0509102/1-en_qual.html works
fairly well...it's got that Big Wink feature (BUG) which lets you
know when the page is done downloading. It's Messenger suit is much
nicer than Outhouse Express...and a little safer from viruses and
macros, which really aren't that scary on an old mac. I would not try
any of the newer version of Netscape on your 5300 (or most other Macs
for that matter :-).

I haven't tried it on my 2300 but noticed that Mozilla, which on my
iBook and MacOsX is great, has a version for older Macs, too
http://www.mozilla.org/. I may go download it right now.

cheers,

Since you're dealing with a machine that's about 7-8 years old, what was
consider zippy then, is sluggish now. If you haven't already, you should
probably open up your Extensions Manager control panel and disable any
extensions that are obviously not beneficial to the 5300 (ie. anything USB,
FireWire, unused printer drivers etc.). Personally I would go OS8.6 as I
haven't noticed a significant difference between it and OS8.1.

what I load on any Pre-G3 PowerBook.

Check it out here: http://www.icab.de/

They indicate a Pro version will be released but it seems like they've been
saying that as long as I can remember. I've always used the free download
and have not encountered any limitations for what I need a browser for.

I know there are a couple other nice browsers but iCab has worked fine.

Yes, you will, but you would get more of a benefit from not using IE 5.1 and
switching to a browser that doesn't have such a huge overhead on system
resources. A few people have mentioned this already, but the only browser I
use on a classic MacOS machine is iCab.

Will SpeedDoubler 8 really help me with my primary requirement (if I stay
with OS8.6 or switch to OS8.1).

It helps a lot in 8.1, but not in 8.6, which is really a completely
different OS, Apple's version numbers notwithstanding. OS 8.1 still relies a
lot of 680x0 emulation; 8.6 is PPC-only and includes a lot more PPC-native
code.

Best,

I haven't had that problem. Battery Recondition 1.5 and SimpleText 1.4,
and HyperCard 2.2 work reliably for me (PB 1400cs/upgraded to G3, MacOS
8.6, 44 MB RAM doubled to 88 using RamDoubler 9.0.1).

Were you running SpeedDoubler 8.1.2? It was much more reliable than some
of the earlier versions...

When I've run into problems on my PowerBook, it's usually been because
some legacy program insists on installing an older version of an
extension on my system. Believe it or not, I started seeing a bunch of
crashes recently, and I discovered that something had installed a MacOS
7.something version of the Network control panel on my v8.6 system! You
might want to try running with Conflict Catcher 8 or newer (you can
download a fully functional demo from http://www.casadyg.com/ ) or
installing a clean system.

Anything higher is OS X only.

bad, I just don't want AOL AIM in my browser and all the shop stuff.

Mozilla has a JavaScript debugger too that I use daily in my job. My 48MB

In fact I have AOL IM 4.5.995, OE5.0.2 and Mozilla 1.0.1 all running now

Moz ran well under the original 166 chip in here until I upgraded 2 months
back. It was slow to respond to URL typing, but it was bearable and stable.
It really isn't supported on slower than 266MHZ, but it ran well other than

In general, 8.1 has BIG performance benefits over 8.0 (e.g. compare the

Likewise, 8.6 tends to have better stability than 8.5, but with

Re: Best OS for a 5300

2003-03-27 Thread Frank Scott
Hi Guys,

I've just joined the ranks of PB5300 users (and this list). I've got 3 of
'em (1 ce and 2 c) which I'm trying to get usable for my 3 kids. The 3
main apps of interest are email, MSWord and internet. The first 2 run
acceptably on the 5300, but IE (5.1) is far too slow to be useful. Any
web-pages with a non-trivial amount of graphics take (at least) tens of
seconds to display (sometimes as much as a minute). I have a high-speed
connection, so that's not the bottleneck. I'm running OS8.6 (clean-install)
with 48-64M of RAM.

I have a few questions...
The first is related to this thread. I've seen lots of posts on the
optimal OS to run, some of them contradictory. Specifically, will I
really get a noticable benefit (i.e. when running IE 5.1) if I back-off to
OS8.1? The sluggish finder I'm experiencing is annoying, but I can live with
it, so I'm really interested in benefits that impact IE.

My second question relates to the usage of SpeedDoubler 8. I've also seen
contradictary posts on this topic. The latest seems to conclude that it
doesn't make any difference once you move to the later OSs (e.g. OS8.6).
Will SpeedDoubler 8 really help me with my primary requirement (if I stay
with OS8.6 or switch to OS8.1).

Any other obvious (or not so obvious) things I should do to (or with) my
5300 to make it more zippy with IE 5.1?

And finally, am I expecting too much from my 5300 when I'd like a webpage to
download/display in less than 5-10 seconds (on average). I don't expect it
to be as fast as my late-model PC that I use at work, but I'm kinda hoping
for something reasonaly close.

Any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Frank Scott

Working USB support, though not much good to a 5300. More relevant is a lot
less 68K code in the kernel, which means much better performance.

 update.

Not quite true. There are Mac OS 8.1 CDs for direct installation. I have
one that was bought from Apple several years ago.

Not 100% accurate. I have an 8.0 boxed cd, an 8.0 Apple CD that shipped with
my 1400c, and an 8.1 Apple cd that shipped with my Beige G3.

If anyone has Office 98, all the OS updates are on the CD, updates for 7, 8,
and 9

What notable features does 8.6 have that 8.1 does not have?

Better power management, greater efficiency, better memory
management, Carbon support to name a few.

Sherlock (infinitely useful)! (Version 1, without the silly metal appearance)

OpenTransport in 8.6 is better, faster, too. Don't know if you can
get the 8.6 OT version for 8.1...

Much better VM code (makes RAMDoubler more or less obsolete).

Better 68k emulation, making SpeedDoubler essentially useless.

Also, far less 68k code making system operations faster than 8.1.

Peace,
Drew

Actually, Carbon will work in 8.1 (very early versions). It just doesn't
work that well. :-P I used it with my 1400 before I swept on to 9.1.

Yes, but most current Carbonated software requires Carbon 1.4 or
later. These versions require OS 8.6 or higher. CarbonLib 1.4+ will
not load correctly on OS 8.1.

some programs just wont run on OS 8.1 - some ethernet cableconnections require
an extra dotted line in the TCP control panel that 8.1 does not have,
There are better appearance manager in 8.6
and 8.6 is not so jumpy - and it does not stall on odd occasions as much.
there is not much of speed difference between the 2 not as if you
compare 8.6 to 9.1,
but if you need speed and no extras go for 7.6.1
there is probably lots more -
but I am a bit mindless as usual

An Illuminatus I'm not, but I do have a 5300 and also seem to be the only
lister around this afternoon.

My 5300c started out with 32MB and 8.5 installed. It ran stably but rather
slowly. Then the RAM card went bellyup, so it was down to 16MB, still under
8.5, but dependent on VM, and almost too lethargic to bear to use for
anything except word processing. It's now back up to 32 MB and also purring
along much more zippily with 7.5.5, but (this may be entirely subjective)
seems subject to random bombs and freezes. So for that reason among others
I'm going to up it to 8.1 as soon as people quit outbidding me on eBay. The
consensus seems to be to avoid 8.0.

HTH,
Victoria
