Re: Clickable trackpad and other 5300 stuff...

2001-09-06 Thread A. L. Kershaw

Yeah...

I thought I had mentioned already that I have Clickpad II installed and
don't like it... But in case I didn't, now I have ;-) I got that handy
bit of info about Clickpad from this list some time ago (maybe two months
back?) and I've been using it. However, I _really_ miss the tapable
trackpad of my Wallstreet when I move over to the 5300... So I've been
looking for the hardware kind of solution instead!

Thanks anyway, but I've already tried Clickpad II

Peace,
Drew

Drew, I believe not to long ago this was discussed on this list, all you
need
is a little piece of software (it is not free, but you can try it before
purchasing -
I personally didn't like the feel of it ...) and unfortunately I can't find
the link or
anything related to it in the chaos that is called my "favorites" ...
Maybe try searching the archives ...

Drew,

Before you go out and buy a 190 trackpad, look at:

ClickPad II , a $14 shareware

Also William Ove wrote:

Replacing the stock track pad in the 5300 with the following parts will

result in a clickable trackpad for the 5300. These parts were used in

some(?) 190s as well as the 2300c and are direct replacement for the stock

5300 track pad

 *661-1032 Track Pad

*922-1916 Cable, Flex, Trackpad

ClickPad was written by Bruce Oberg and was updated to ClickPad II by Dan

Wright. I do not seem to have the URL handy. The parts above have the

sensitivity in hardware and so work better, but ClickPad II works and has

some nice adjustment features.

I find the clickable features very nice in some situations. When text

editing however I find I often touch the pad sending my cursor off to some

unwanted place. It would be useful to find something along the line of

QuickKeys that one could use to easily turn the feature off and on.

Hi Brent!

It's back to school again for me... ;-) Senior year, thankfully. So
I've been transplanted from Boston to Tucson once again.

It sounds like you've had some success with sending 5300s through the
REA 3x, right? I've gotten some tips from folks (thanks William and
Martin!) about the tappable trackpad and it's part number... (anyone
know where I can pick one up? eBay seems fairly unreliable in this
regard - lots of 5300 trackpads, but none necessarily tappable)

Speaking of getting no sleep... It's amazing what college can do to a
person! And this midday heat really knocks me out too! So I think
I'm going to go take a nap now... ;-)

Peace!

Ah, so that would be it then: I can replace the 5300 trackpad with the
trackpad from a 190! I do faintly recall something about them being
different mechanisms...

Drew,

What you doing on this coast?

I have sent several 5300s thru the REA program for the second or third time.
But I did not send that one thru.

I need to get up in 41/2 hours and can not remember about the tappable, but I
will try to look and see if I kept anything on that this afternoon.

Clickable trackpad and other 5300 stuff...

2001-09-04 Thread Andrew Kershaw

Hello all!

It's been some time since I posted to the list... So I'll just say
"Hello" again. ;-)

I've done some looking for materials to convert the 5300cs like I was
talking about a while back. Yeah, I want to turn it into a tablet
with a stainless steel case... So far, the best I've been able to do
(well, within a reasonable price range) is a roll of aluminum or
galvanized steel flashing. But I'm still working on it! And my
roommate here at school hasn't taken to kindly to having PowerBook
parts spread out all over the apartment... heh...

So, anyway... I asked a while back, but I can't seem to find the
response in my personal archive of email: The 5300 doesn't have a
tapable trackpad but it can be swapped with a pad from a 'Book that
does, right? Which book would that be? Does the 190 have a clickable
trackpad? I know about the software solution (thanks to the help I
got here), but it's just not as elegant as hardware (er... it doesn't
really work that well).

Finally, i've noticed that the power adapter is becoming loose again.
This machine seems to have been through the REA twice already, but the
date stamped in the battery bay says April, 1997. That was nearly 4.5
years ago! Do you think Apple might take it a 3rd time? ;-) And
before I send it off, does anyone know of a cheap source of power
supply boards? The most current ones on eBay were $25 but a while
back they were going for ~$5. Powerbookguy.com is too expensive... :-(

Peace & Thanks!
