We have tried about everything I can think of. We ran disk Dr. and then
defraged it. Then we decided to completely reload the os and all the
software. NOTHING HELPS. Do any of you have an idea what to do now. I am
sending this from the machine now and it is working fine.
It is running OS 8.6, when this started a few days ago I was running 9.1
with no problems.
You have some sort of temperature-related problem, likely with the
logic board.
what happens if you start with the battery out - that would aid the
cooling ? just a guess but that maybe could give some clue ?

I have a 1400/166 with 64MB ram and a 15 gig HDD that I cannot figure out.
When I first turn it on in the morning it will only boot to the happy face
Mac. It will just hang there. After I force it to restart and try to boot
without the extension it still only goes to the happy Mac. If you leave it
set there after about 20 minutes it will boot up. Then it will bomb. It will
take at least two restarts to get past the bomb, then you can reboot it and
other than it being slow it works right. A little later it will get to it's
regular speed.

Re: Contrary 1400

Sounds like something has to warm up before getting
happy which means hardware to me. Not gonna be easy
to find/fix. My suggestion is to leave it on (or
sleeping) all the time. How is the PRAM battery?
