Exactly -- I don't have that bit yet, but it is supposed to be much more
convenient, you're right. Even dad complained less when he used it. ;-)

I use a new Kodak DX4330 which is great camera. Primarily it's plugged into
my G4 using the Dock, but for my 3400 I bought a PC Card adaptor on ebay for
£18 that takes everything except compact flash - those readers are even
cheaper. Speed is about the same as USB and it works a treat. The files are
straight JPEG's and I use JPEGView or Picture Viewer to view and Photoshop 6
to edit. Don't feel you have to buy an older camera just for the
connectivity. A serial connection is hellishly slow anyway.

Tim.

Which is a reason for using the PC Card reader, it's faster, much
faster than serial. It's roughly on a par with USB. I forgot to
mention this in my previous post.

John,

Several issues here, IME.

First of all, and some have addressed this, is connectivity to the PB.
I highly recommend a camera that allows you to make a PCMCIA
connection. Anything that has removable memory cards or cartridges.
I've used both CompactFlash and SmartMedia. The PCMCIA adaptors are
inexpensive. Then, maximize your memory card size to your budget.

Secondly, IR you make sure the "older" camera can save it's photos in a
format easily readable by your photo software. The trouble I had with
this one camera may have been due to my naivete, but it can be annoying
if you cannot easily drag and drop the photos onto your HD and open
them in batches without having to translate each one. It seems as if
this should never be a problem, but as I say, I had difficult for a
time.

After that, you get into digital camera features and that gets more
subjective. If you're an experienced 35mm SLR user you may find
digital disappointing, especially in the lower end. It takes
considserable $$$ to get many features that one takes for granted in
35SLR.

HTH
Cliff

Any PowerBook that has PC Card slots (CardBus not required) can work
with most any modern digital camera. AFAIK with the exception of
Sony only some of the really old digital cameras don't use standard
removable flash memory cards (Compact Flash, SmartMedia, MultiMedia,
Secure Digital, Memory Stick). Sony continued to make some cameras
that used floppy until not long ago. They also make some that use
mini CD-R. You can get a PC Card adapter for any of the above
mentioned flash memory devices so you can read the pictures off the
camera that way.

PowerBook 3400s are CardBus compliant, more or less. It might
require a $100 conversion though. A CardBus capable PowerBook can
use a USB card which can then connect to more modern cameras
directly. But aside from a possible conversion the USB card alone is
more expensive than the Flash adapter.

Short answer is you can use most any digital camera that uses expansion memory.

I'm really happy with my Olympus D600-L, which uses the serial port
on my Mac. I got it second hand for about US$135.

Prior to seizing I forgot to say

Basically I think as far as battery usage goes a PCMCIA to CF or USB would
be the way to go. I think that hooking up a camera to the serial port is a
waste of battery power.

By older do you mean 10 months or a couple of years?

I have a Kodak dc215 I have been considering getting rid of.
It would really be best I think to use a compact flash adapter on the Mac
though.
