Yes it was the refurb at $19.99 plus packing plus postage!!!
We have a US publishing agent who tells me that despite being the other side
of the pond he could ship it to me for about $8-$9
Sometimes it gets you wondering if they think we are all idiots - gah!
All the best,

Many thanks to all who are helping.

All the machines at present have 56K internal or external modems and we can
cable together all except the powerbooks - so a wide
choice.We can upgrade the IMac to OSX - no problem here as we now have all
the Mac, O,S.s from 7 to X available, (pity we cannot
convince the Crescendo Upgraded 7600 its a proper full G3 as we could then
put 9.1 onto it as well) and will try to get the Wireless adapter Bruce
mentions - hope they ship to the UK! as
things like this are gold dust over here, as is the potential
Farallon/Proxim PCI adaptor card for the 7600, so if anyone sees one we are
in the market - PLEASE .
We also have on the side being unused a spare
complete Cisco aeronet system (the old 802.11b spec) which was originally

Will keep hunting and keep you all posted. If the very worst occurs the
market
will be full of unwanted gadgets!

Re: Help needed with proposed airport network

2004-12-01 Thread Kenneth Vann

This is one way to do it, but prehaps not the correct way.

As you want to use the 7600 as you router, you will need a software router
(IP Net Router) to make that work. You might have to add another Ethernet
card to the 7600 unless you are using a modem to connect to the Internet.

A better way to go is with a stand alone hardware router, like the Snow
Base Station, or other, which will let you share your internet with both
the wireless and wired machines. As the 7600 and iMac are not portable
machines, this should not be a problem.

This is should work with either dial up or DSL/Cable.

The cost of the IP Net Router and a used Snow Base Station is about the same.

If it is not practicable to run wires between the 7600/iMac and the Base
Station, then a Ethernet wireless adaptor should work. There are some links
on my FAQ to a Dlink product that will work under OS 9.

You might be able to find one of the PCI adaptor cards for the WaveLan PC
Card you already have. If so, this could be used to put the 7600 on
wireless. Farallon/Proxim also had a Skyline PCI Card which used the
Skyline PC card to put a PCI slot Mac on wireless. If you found a
Farallon/Proxim PCI adaptor, then you could use the Skyline PC card you
already have, and convert the PB5300c to use one of the extra WaveLan Gold
cards.

Please let me know what your final solution is.

At present we have;
 a PB5300C /OS 9 all fired up with a Proxim card;
 a Power PC upgraded  540C /OS 8.6 with an enterasys card;
 a PowerMac 7600 / OS 9 upgraded to G3 using a Sonic Crescendo but no radio
card facility;
 and
a recently aquired iMac Blue which only has USB ports. We have an Apple
Airport and several spare WIFI cards all of which are compatible with any
proposed system ( mainly Wavelan Gold and Wavelan Bronze mainly).

Does anyone have any ideas on a good or the the best way to put this puzzle
together so that possibly we could use a landline from the 7600 to the
Airport and then wireless the 5300 and the 540? or, better still, is there a
way of connecting the iMac somehow into the loop bearing in mind it only has
USB outlets and we cannot see a means of equiping it with a card as it is a
tray loading and not slot loading version?

Sorry some of this is strictly speaking off-topic but its all to get the
powerbooks functional n the end.

Thanks n advance,

Gerald Jennings

Crap.. Then TigerDirect is selling a D-link DWL-122 USB wireless
adapter for $20, but it has OSX support only. The cheaper solution is
to use a wired connection, the more expensive route is something like
D-links DWL-810+ wireless ethernet bridge.

AFAIK all iMacs can accept an airport card.
If not, it and the 7600 can use a ethernet to wireless bridge such as:
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/products/index.html?
action=c2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3product_uid=62800_LOC=US which
will work with anything that sports an ethernet port.

With the airport you can connect the ethernet port to a small ethernet
switch ($10-$50, I found several under $20 via froogle. Trendnet is a
decent cheap brand) and the iMac and 7600 to that via wired
connections. If your physical layout works with that, this is the
simplest solution:

Powerbooks - - - -Airportswitch---7600, iMac.
Problems arise if you've got a graphite airport and are connecting it's
ethernet to a broadband internet connection.

In that case you need to get a broadband router instead of a switch,
but they can be gotten with several wired ports as well, enough to
connect the wireless and wired systems to the internet.

  internet
  |
PB- - - - -Airport--router--7600, iMac
If you've got a snow airport, it's easier, because it has two ethernet
connectons, one for the broadband WAN connection and one you can use
for the wired segment of your LAN.
