Re: OS considerations for newly acquired 1400c
I find 9.1 works fine in my 1400s, but they are both upgraded to G3. 9.1 may be slow with a stock CPU. I like 8.1 on slower Macs. Much less memory use, faster and less bugs than 8.6. I copy the carbon lib extension (I'm using version1.6 now) into the 8.1 extensions folder. That allows numerous apps to work with 8.1 that were designed for 8.5 and higher. Any favorites or benefits in compatibility, speed and/or ram upgrading to 8.6 (a consultant I spoke with preferred 8.5.1 and 9.1+ due to less software bugs than 8.6) or maybe taking it down to 8.1? I run Photoshop6, AOL5 w/GV 56k card (have an uninstalled Linksys Combo Ethernet card model EC2T for when I look into DSL shortly), Opera5, Netscape4.79, BBedit Lt6, Word98 (but have 2001), FMP4, Acrobat4, some emulated game favorites, inits, tools and other minor apps (with 8.1, I'd loose my dock and appearance themes and sounds; with 8.6 or 9.1 I'd get itunes). OS considerations for newly acquired 1400c

Interesting opinion. I thought the word on the street was that 8.6 was the most stable Mac OS there is. I certainly thought so until it hit my Sonnet CPU upgrade. You take a speed and RAM hit with 9.x, but honestly, after the first day, you don't notice it much. PhotoShop 6 will notice the RAM, though. If you run 9.1 with Word 6/98, you lose keystroke macros and since MS wants to sell you Office 2001 or X, they aren't going to issue a fix. You may not ever use these, but I did for common scanner mistakes -- one key and rn became m, etc. As far as iTunes is concerned, with only a 1 GB HD, you won't have much of a music library on your computer anyway. All in all, with only 133, I would stay with some flavor of 8. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
