OS9 for PB 3400c

2006-01-19 Thread Steve
Being laid up for a while with a bad back, I'm rediscovering the joys of my
old PB 3400c. The only problem is that the software installation has become
somewhat ratty after years of installing/uninstalling stuff. Given there's
nothing irreplaceable on it at the mo', I've decided on a fresh OS reinstall.

The disks I have are 8.0 with an 8.1 update. I wondered if there are benefits
to updating to 9.1.

I'm mainly going to be running Word 6 and a browser (any recommendations on
the latter?). Email wouldn't come amiss, either. I also want to install a PC
card wi-fi adapter to connect to my main Linux box (which is running atalk).

I've seen a number of 9.1 install CDs for sale on eBay. Any gotchas I should
be aware of? Some mention that they're for G3s and up - so I guess they're
'New World' discs - is that right? I just want to be sure I'm getting the
right thing before dropping any money on this.

Alternatively, anyone on this group with an install CD they know will work on
a PB 3400c and willing to part with it for money?

Appreciate any advice.

I installed 9.1 for a while. There are some hoops you
need to jump through because there is some problem
with initializing the HD with the new setup utility. I
bet you can find the proceedure if you Google it. It
seems that I had to get a utility (I think it is
called I wish I were or something lik e that) which
would change the gestalt number in order to allow 9.04
to turn into 9.1 on my 3400.

In all honosty, I have now gone back to a wiped disk
and a re-install of 8.6. The machine seemed to have
freezing issues far too often in 9.1 and I really have
no need for the extra overhead of 9 on my 3400 (180).
It really seems much happier back in 8. If you had a
240, or a specific software which required 9, there
may be a slightly better case to install.

Good luck.

Hi,

I have 6 PB 3400c, all but 1 has some form of GLOD or sleeping sickness,
the 2 machines that run check okay with Tech Tools, does anyone know of
a diagonistic that will detect these problems.

Is everything ok with the books ? Backlight, Screen, keyboard
and battery ? On my 3400c the backlightbulb was broken and it
rebootet as soon as i removed the battery...

Have you reset the powermanager ? have you exchanged the
board with the powermanagement (the borad with the pins for the
battery) ?

What happens if you remove the battery and run them with
cable only ?

Re: PB 3400c

2004-12-02 Thread Phil Cook
Oh sorry. My mistake. There is also a term called easter eggs that
expresses sometimes a few key combinations to show you something out
of the ordinary. See example below:

Egg Name: Application Switcher Credits
Works On: Mac OS 9
Manufacturer: Apple

How it Works:
1. Click and drag down Application Switcher box (upper-right pull-down
menu) to 'undock' App Switcher.
2. Run enough programs (5-7) and do not hide their names to make a box
big enough.
3. Make a text clipping in Simple Text or elsewhere with the following
three words: Secret About Box
4. Select it and drag to desktop to make a clipping.
5. Now drag the clipping file into the App Switcher box.

Special Notes:
Tested on MacOS 9.2.2. Not regression-tested, but I suppose it works
in MacOS 9.x.

Is there a 3400c easter egg?

Just a wild assed guess, but IBM think pads go directly into sleep when they
decide the battery is too low, regardless of what the battery actually
shows.

 Manfred,

I have easter-egged these guys to death, the symptoms on each vary
slightly and 2 of them will start up on a power reset, 2 at least chime
and 1 gives an audible click on the audio before the sleep light
illuminates solid, and 1 is just dead, I have tested all components in a
known good machine and everything tests good except the logic boards,
testing on the machines that will startup, and all would at one time,
but gave no indication of a fault using various versions of TechTool
Pro, when it was obvious from physical symptoms that the machines were
 malfunctioning.

Is everything ok with the books ? Backlight, Screen, keyboard

Have you reset the powermanager ? have you exchanged the

What happens if you remove the battery and run them with

FYI to Roger,
I just picked up a battery on Ebay that supposedly works with a 3400c, which
is what I bought it for although it's not the same model number as the
original. Cheap, 17 bucks including shipping. Let me know if you want the
url, if you can't find it there. Some company in Utah. Might help if yours
is fried.

If you put your ear near the powerboard, do they make a slight, high
pitched whining sound ?

If so, that is what I call the Whine Of Doom, which, as far as I can
tell, is terminal. I dont know what causes, it, and I have tried
transplanting several chips with no success.

Kind of a bummer, that appears to be the problem in most terminal 3400/3500.

The Duo 230 requires a 24w adapter. The 3400c's adapter is 45w.
That's a FAQ. The 3400's adapter supplies 48W at 24V. The Duo 230
requires 24W at 24V. As long as the voltage is the same and the
power rating of the supply is higher than the computer's requirement
it's okay.

In other words this is fine.

They are both 24V. The 3400's adapter supplies 2A while the Duo only

backlight almost certainly burning out. bummer. You can fit a new one

We have two PowerBook 3400c on a wireless network with not only Mac desktops, but also
Windows desktops and laptops (Sony Vaio and IBM ThinkPad). Because I did not want to
bother with driver hacks or patches, we use MacWireless 802.11b PCMCIA cards, which
have worked flawlessly out of the box. With this card, your OS does not matter, as it
supports OS 7.5.5 through 9.2.2.

This issue has been discussed numerous times on this List. Others have successfully
used PC cards of assorted brands, most of which cost less than the MacWireless card.

likely something in the screen hardware.
Maybe a backlight tube failing ?

 Mad Dog

Well, it's not that they don't work. They do affect the brightness, it
just doesn't go quite high enough in my opinion. Is the backlight tube
failing the ONLY explanation left? If so...bummer. Does that require a
new display?
Thanks.

PB 3400c battery issue

2003-09-18 Thread Eric D. Bautista
Hello,

My powerbook 3400c running OS 8.6 has this quirk:

The battery level display near the date and time is gradually getting lower
and the battery level display in the bottom control strip is getting lower
as time passes by. I tried to put the computer to sleep while AC power is
connected and it doesnt seem to recharge the battery, that is, the battery
level display isnt getting higher.

I leave the AC power connected to the electrical socket while the computer
is turned off at night or when I am not using it and that doesnt increase
the battery level displays either.

Any suggestions?

Eric

The battery could be shot. There is a discharge utility you could try.

[2] PB 3400c 180 16/1.8HD for sale

2003-09-12 Thread Vic Duong

Greetings everyone,

I have two non-functioning 3400c/180 that I want to get rid of. I am
assuming they have the motherboard non-start issue that I've been reading on
this list(already tried a new p-ram battery). I just don't have the interest
to fix them myself, so I'm now hoping I can find a good home for these PB.

They are in good condition, they just no longer turn on. It would make a
very good computer for parts. One of them will come with an extra battery. I
have a 12xCD-ROM and floppy module, AC adapter, 32-meg RAM mod., and a
PCMICA 56k modem w/ x-jack. One of them has built-in ethernet.

Please feel free to e-mail me for pics and other questions. I am not willing
to part out the machines yet, but rather if someone wants to buy one of the
powerbooks I am open to negotiating the parts that goes with it.

So if you are interested, make me an offer.

Thanks for looking,

Vic Duong

Re: PB 3400C Logic Board

2003-06-03 Thread gponz
Hi,

Thanks for all the replies, a few more questions:

1. How can I tell if the problem is in the logic board or
the power supply board?
2. Are both easily replacable?
3. How do I reset Power Manager? I was told to hold the
reset button in the back for a few minutes... is that it?
I've done it many times and nothing changes.
4. What do you suggest I do? The PB works good, except for
the date thing, the non-charging main battery and a few
unexpected freezes or shutting off (these rarely happen)

I'd like to get it working again, especially the main
battery. It's annoying having a PB that HAS to be plugged in
all the time.

I've opened it and changed the PRAM batteries, there's no
leak.

Thanks again.

 Hi all,

A while ago I asked you guys for help because my PB 3400c
was behaving very wierd. After all the tests you suggested
, it seems the problem lies with the logic board.

 1. The clock will not stay correct. I've changed the PRAM
battery twice and let it charge... still nothing.

 2. The main battery will not charge. It worked ok and
suddenly one day it would not charge no matter what I do.
If I disconnect the power supply the PB shuts off
instantly, which means the battery doesn't even have a
 second of life.
 3. It does strange things once in a while, like freezing
for no reason or shutting off suddenly.

 My questions are:

 1. Where can I get a logic board?
 2. How much will it cost approximately?
 3. Where can I find instructions on how to install it?
 4. Can I upgrade to a G3?

 Thanks for the help.

You've done this with NO power source available -- no AC adapter, no battery
(possibly even no PRAM battery, but that may be an old wives' tale)?? And
that's the Power button, not the reset button you're supposed to press, I
believe.

Have you tried another battery? I'm wondering if the 'intelligent' battery
circuitry has bit the big one on you. (Anyone in the listening audience
know if that would produce these symptoms??)

eBay will surely be able to provide you with a G3 processor and the mfg's
site will probably have installation instructions.

I've picked up a couple G3 processors off of ebay for around $100 and they
worked great!
Especially my G3-enabled 1400!!!

Except, of course, the original post was regarding a 3400, which is not
processor-upgradable. Furthermore, since the problem was not related to the
processor so much as it is to the power handling, upgrading the processor
wouldn't relieve the reported problem.

Well, he could upgrade to G3 by way of a Kanga logic board... So it
is possible... ;-)

A motherboard from a PowerBook G3 (original, also known as 3500 or
Kanga) is a direct swap for the 3400 motherboard, though I seem to
recall there being some RAM compatibility issues with modules greater
than 32MB in size or below a certain speed... Someone with more
knowledge than I should set me straight if I'm wrong.

My guess would be a bad Power Supply board?

You got hte machine in pieces... Why was it in
pieces? How long since it had been running? What do
you know about the parts you put back in it, good or
bad?

Check the voltage coming out of your AC Adapter with a
mutli meter to make sure it's correct.

PB 3400c/240 startup problems

2003-04-02 Thread Roger Volk
I have a PB 3400c/240 that came to me in pieces. I reassembled it
and during reassembly I replaced the Pram battery as it was easy to do
at that point.

On power up the sleep light came on solid, reset the machine with
the button on the back, light went out, machine still would not startup,
even with command, option, power. Reset Power Manager, still no joy and
using the reset button on the rear of the machine only toggles the sleep
light on and off, my other 3400c stars up about 60 secs after resetting.

Anybody???:(

Thanks
Roger

pb 3400c behaving strange

2003-02-11 Thread gponz
Hi everybody!!

I have a pb 3400c that's behaving very strange... maybe
someone out there can help me. Here's what's happening:

If I plug the pb to the AC and start it up, it works ok,
except for the date, which is always wrong... I already
changed the PRAM battery twice, so that's not it. Someone
told me it could be the logic board... but the machine works
as normal once I change the date.

Other problem is that the main battery doesn't charge, so if
I pull the plug the pb dies, I have to keep it connected all
the time. This is strange, since the battery was working
fine one day, and suddenly it died, it didn't last less or
anything.

I think the power adaptor has a loose cable or something,
because if I move it (the plug that connects to the pb), it
sometimes doesn't work. Could this be the problem with the
main battery? or with the PRAM

I hope I explained myself.

Thanks for the help

Gabriel

Re: pb 3400c behaving strange

2003-02-11 Thread Sionnach Aisling
Your date being wrong is usually a sure sign that
something is wrong with the PRAM battery. (Yes, I read
that you've changed it twice.) A bad PRAM can also be
the cause of oddities experienced when working from
battery power.

Have you tested both PRAM batteries you put in the
machine to make sure they were OK? When you initially
changed the PRAM battery, had the original battery
corroded onto the Mother Board or the connector for
the PRAM?

I'd check the voltage on the PRAM battery and check
the cable that the PRAM connects to (if memory serves
it plugs into an extension cable...) Make sure the
connection is seated well. Make sure the cable is
kinked the way it is routed. If you have a multi
meter, check continuity on the extension cable from
the PRAM.

The plug being loose at the rear of your powerbook is
generally caused by a broken solder joint where the
plug attaches to the Power board...

I suppose all of your trouble could be power board
related, but I'd start there...

Cheers,
Sionnach

Did you try resetting the power manager?

The power socket itself could be the problem with the battery not
charging. If the socket has a problem, like being loose, the battery may
not getting the charging power it needs and the computer may not even get
power. You probably did diagnose it yourself.

I think the power adaptor has a loose cable or something,
because if I move it (the plug that connects to the pb), it
sometimes doesn't work. Could this be the problem with the
main battery? or with the PRAM

 I hope I explained myself.

Re: pb 3400c behaving strange

The plug being loose at the rear of your powerbook is
generally caused by a broken solder joint where the
plug attaches to the Power board...

I suppose all of your trouble could be power board
related, but I'd start there...

well I was there inside the PB 3400c AND the solder joint is just
placed on the mobo stabilized ONLY through the solder joint, if you
manage to solder it again it will still be very fragile, so I put in
one extra cable from over one of the joints (- sadly that was not
enough, better though) - but i did not find a good big enough space
to fit another cable in ! it is almost unbelievable that apple ever
could have made anything that fragile ! someone here suggested epoxy
glue after the soldering is done - but that could make the mobo
itself crack ? since the force from wiggling the poweroutletchord is
only apprehended by that solderjoint.
by the way - it seems like PB 2400 batteries and powersupplys fits OK
in the PB 3400 !

can we have a cloussoup pic of that mobo with solder joints, please
a link ??? anyone ?
AND...

my meager experience gave that the battery is powered from the same
mobo connections as the battery, its not like an old taperecorder
where the battery is side by side of the trafo, the battery (IF i
remember correctly) connects from the opposite side of the mobo and
there are only two cables inside the powersupplychord itself - earth
and + (?) would seem silly (sillier ?) to split that alone + chord
at the mobos solder joint - if it is anyroads joined up in the
trafo ? maybe there are different kinds of power supplys (???)
because the jack itself suggests 3 cables connected up inside -
have you tried reconditioning your battery ??? and zappin it's
internal pram (smart battery) does it get very hot when battery
inside ? does the battery even try to fill up ? ours did not when the
battery was dead, with the new battery itstarted filling/charging at
once (the animated battery in the menu row).

and I am soo sorry for my terrible english sometimes --- ! when you
have to fix yourself and dont have an electronic education its not so
easy managing all those terms - not even in native tounge.
I enjoy this list a lot !

PB 3400C vs. PB 5300 CS

2002-10-09 Thread James Williams

I have a chance to add a PB3400C to my (already too large) collection of
Macs at a reasonable price. I've never used a '3400 and I was curious as to
how the speed of one with 32mb of ram would compare to my trusty old
Powerbook 5300 CS with 40MB ram.

Considering the fact that the 3400 has a 180 mhz processer compared to 100
in the '5300, plus a faster bus and a backside cache I would think it would
be quite a bit faster? Has anyone actually used both machines that could
give me some type of a percentage difference? I'm just trying to determine
if I can justify the 3400 as a backup computer to my main laptop which is
the Ibook clamshell 300 mhz at this point.

Thanks!

I have used both and i would say that the 3400 should be about 4 x as fast
as the 5300 in everything. depending on what os you use.

IMO, no comparison between the two in many respects in addition to
speed.
 3400 hands down.

PB 3400c PRAM Battery

2002-08-19 Thread gponz

Hi, I have a PB 3400c and I need a new PRAM battery, the
promblem is that I'm currently living in Mexico and I don't
know where to get one here.

Where or what kind of store might have this battery? I read
somewhere that it was part #922-2629, but what does this
mean? Could I get it in a place like Radio SHak?

Or could I get it shipped from the US? Does anybody know
where I could buy it and have it sent to me?

Thanks for the help.

Gabriel

Re: PB 3400c PRAM Battery

2002-08-19 Thread Sionnach Aisling

Well, I don't know where to tell you to go in Mexico
:-) But I bought one for my 3400 from Ebay... Paid
$11.00 for it. (Factory Apple Part). Don't know why I
waited so long to change it. The PRAM battery in my
3400 (I knew it was dead for sometime) was actually
starting to corrode and leak acid from the green
plastic seal!!! Luckily, I got it out before the
corrosion could do any damage to any of the system
components.

Cheers,
Sionnach
