I've used RamDoubler on two different machines, and usually the problem
when it popped up was a version incompatibility--I needed to get a later
version. It shouldn't have any affect on the control strip tho. Could
that be turned off in the control panel and just needs to be turned back
on?

(Oh--also make sure you have virtual memory turned off in the CP--IIRC
that does conflict with ramdoubler running)

RAM Doubler/Tripler(?) question

2003-11-23 Thread COCCORP
Hi fellow true-believers,

I have RD 8 on my PB 1400/183; it was acting kinda janky, crashing
frequently, like every 10 minutes(!) whether left alone or doing simple stuff, like
going to the SPECIAL menu...

I looked on my RD 8 control panel, and remembered that I had it set to
multiply the built-in RAM (40mb) to 100mb. So it was x 2.5...

I reset it to just double the RAM to 80mb. Restarted the laptop; works just
fine so far! Has not crashed all day.

WHat gives?

Where can I get RAM Doubler?

2003-10-06 Thread Luca Rescigno
I've just received my PowerBook 520c today and I really like it! It's
quite fast even in system 7.5.5 (which came with it). I'm thinking of
going to 7.6.1 just because it's better than 7.5.x, but right now it's
really low on RAM and I wanted to install RAM Doubler on it. I remember
having it on an LC III+ from a while ago, and it worked fine, but now I
can't install it. The installer says I need to have the original disk.
I know it's just a simple extension so all I need is the RamDoubler
1.6.2 extension and I'll be fine. Does anyone have this?

RamDoubler uses an algorithm of some kind to double the effective
memory space (sorta like compressing a .sit or .zip file). This slows
down all RAM reads and writes because the compressed data stored in the
physical RAM has to be decompressed. There are some hacks for really
old versions of RamDoubler that let you increase the compression factor
from 2 up to something utterly ridiculous like 16 (i.e. 2 MB physical
RAM = 32 MB useable RAM!!). As the ratio gets higher, performance
suffers.

MacOS VM, in any version, uses hard drive space to supplement the
physical RAM. As a result, any access to the "virtual" area of
addressable RAM (the part that is actually on the hard drive) is slowed
down to the hard drive's speed, which is much much slower than any RAM.
And requires access to the hard disk, making it a bad idea for
PowerBook users on battery.

In my experience (admittedly limited to System 7.x) this is the order
of perfomance, from best to worst:

Neither
RamDoubler (2x if adjustable)
RamDoubler (any other setting)
Virtual Memory (distant fourth)

Assuming your RAM card's seated correctly, try putting a space in front
of RD so it loads earlier. As a CP in OS 8/9 (IIRC), it loads later as a
CP. See how it goes elsewhere in the boot process (can't hurt).

Cheers,

Stumped! 5300 and Ram Doubler

2002-08-29 Thread c d

I'm totally stumped. My 5300c simply refuses to work with Ram Doubler. It
has its stock amount of real RAM (16MB soldered in), an upgraded HD (IBM
1GB), no PC cards, running MacOS 8.1. Whenever I try to install Ram Doubler
(version 8.01 or 9.01, or 8, or 9) I get a "bus error" immediately when
starting up. This is when the MacOS screen comes up, before any
extension/control panel icons show up. I get the bus error if no other
extensions are loaded EXCEPT for Ram Doubler. I get the bus error if I load
ALL extensions, INCLUDING Ram Doubler. Funny thing is, if I turn virtual
memory ON (built in Apple Control Panel) and have Ram Doubler loaded at the
same time, the computer will boot fine and it will tell me Ram Doubler
cannot load because virtual memory is active (turn it off!) I've tried
loading a clean system installation with all the extensions on/off, no luck.
I KNOW other people must be using RD with their 5300s - any ideas? I ran
TechTool Pro (latest 3.0.7 version) and everything checks out fine. Same
for Norton Disk Doctor.

Speed and Ram Doubler 8

2002-08-11 Thread William Barnett-Lewis

Hello all,

It seems that these were the last versions to support M68k and also are
no longer available from Connectix. Does anyone out there have a copy of
these 2 packages that they would care to sell?

Thanks,

William

I've run RD 1/2 and Photoshop 2.5/3.0.5 on both my IIfx and my Q800 with no
problems. I'm running RD 8 and Photoshop 3.0.5/5.5 on my 8500 with no
problems.

FWIW, Photoshop _still_ has it's own VM scheme (you set it up in preferences,
where you designate a scratch disk. Also, NOTHING beats real memory, RD is
really only a stopgap measure, and hasn't really been necessary since system
8.1 or so, as Apple's own VM started improving greatly then.

Photoshop runs with VM on, but much prefers not to.

I am pretty sure that Photoshop still is not compatible with RamDoubler I
don't think it ever has been. I haven't used it since version 4 but way back
then Photoshop used its own method of virtual memory. In the lab where we
had it RamDoubler had to be disabled to use Photoshop, so they bought more
ram instead. This was a community college's graphic arts computer lab and
they needed Photoshop more than they needed RamDoubler.

I don't have RD on my PB 1400, but I've used . 1, 2 and 8 with various Macs
and systems. I've seen very little slow down, but it's there. Less than
with VM though.

I just had RD 9 on my 8500 running 8.5.1, and it was a disaster, froze up
the machine when I tried to launch Photoshop (v. 3.0.5 and 5.5), so I had
to remove all traces of it, and never got around to seeing how it ran
otherwise.

According the the connectix website RD 9 is supposed to work from 8.0 and up.

2001-07-09 Thread Karl Gerlach

Just on a lark, I am trying out the latest version of Ram Doubler, which I used years
ago, on my Frankenbook. Is it just me, or does this thing slow down various processes?
I thought Ram Doubler was supposed to be a bit sparkier than Apple's regular VM.
