There is also a shareware program out there called Battery Amnesia.
I've found it pretty good for getting rid of the memory effect on my
Powerbook 1400. I cn now get close to 2 hours of "on" time from one

Can another lister or the originator of the battery rebuild website provide a

It will take days for me to dig out the old email post on this.

I'm at a coffee house writing this on my 1400 on wifi.
My machine is a 166 with 40 MB RAM and runs OS 9.1 just fine.

Not as snappy as 8.6 with low RAM space but I like the features enough to put
up with the trade off.
Also some software needs OS 9
A 133 may be better off with 8.6 though.

CF usage has been discussed here before, but when has that ever stopped
us? :)

I used to boot my 5300 from a CF--the 512 has plenty of room to hold a
system folder, and everything loads faster than the HD. I actually had
the system folder on the HD too--when I wanted to use my wifi card--I
never could get the hang of the location manager, so when I wanted to do
wifi, I just popped out the CF, and when the PB couldn't find it's defined
startup device, it defaulted to the next mass storage device, the HD, and
booted from it. Worked just fine until the 5300 died and and I didn't
want to buy a 3rd unit. (Well, I did end up getting a G4 Powerbook, but I
still run my PPC'd 520c at home all the time. :) )

Noah, I had OS 8.6 on a 1400 w/56MB RAM, went to OS 9.0.4, then 9.1
for a while, eventually back to OS 8.6 ...

Do get more real Ram !!!

I agree w/ Howard (see below), I think RamDoubler 8 out performs
Apples Virtual Memory using OS 8.6.

It accomplishes the task in a more efficient manner and is somewhat tweakable
If you do go to OS 9.x, you'll need RamDoubler 9 ...

You could join the LEM Swap List, then place a WTB for a G3 upgrade.
They do pop up occasionally.

 Thanks for any insights,

This may have been discussed in past posts, but I use a CompactFlash
memory card w/ adapter in one of the PCMCIA slots.
I keep some apps on the card to free up HD space.
The CF card will appear and work as a removable hard drive on your Desktop.

NON removable if you direct Virtual Memory to the CF card ...
BAD stuff will happen if you eject the card while the PB is running !!!

Fry's had a 1 day sale recently, 512 MB CF $20 after rebate, $$ to MBs,
not great compared to a used 4 GB HD, but pretty versatile,
and no lost screws ...

What features of OS9 are you really wanting to get? I've considered it, but
haven't heard any compelling reasons to get off 8.5 yet.

Also, I'm a bit curious how you make do with such a smallish hard drive. I

Re: 1400 & Mac OS 9

2006-01-17 Thread yersinia
Noah writes,

Welcome back, Noah. :-)

Now...uh, well...since you say your 1400 is running smoothly on 8.6 and
you like it, and I notice that there's so little difference between OS
8.6 and OS 9, I'd ask you, why bother upgrading? I say this from having
run 8.6 on a Powerbook 5300c and 9.2.2 on a G3 Beige Desktop. The ONLY
difference I ever noted between these two OS's at all is that 9.2.2 is a
faster bootup with a snappier running Finder and apps open faster on
9.2.2 than on 8.6, but that could also be on account of the G3 having a
faster processor and more RAM than the 5300 (100 vs. 266 MHz, 40 MB vs.
256 MB at the time). No, I never tried to put OS 9 on the 5300 -- listers
here said it would crawl on 9.1, and I decided, no thank you.

Then again, I also recall that OS 9.1 on the G3 was also a slow bootup
and sometimes sluggish, certainly in comparison to 9.2.2 (I updated to
9.2.2 because G-listers in droves were saying my G3 would "perk up" if I
did, and they were right) -- and so far as I'm aware, OS 9.1 is the
highest OS even a jazzed-up 1400 can run at all...otherwise I'd suggest
you try 9.2.2, which is the OS I like best.

Well, great to have you back on the list, and good luck!

~Yersinia.

I agree with the other listers; without a G3 upgrade in your 1400, running
OS9 , while certainly possible (a friend has it on his 5300ce!) , is not going
to set any speed records. A 233mhz G3 processor should be in the $50 range
now, or even cheaper is the 183mhz PPC upgrade, if you can find one.

I would also say get yourself the RAM module you need to boost your onboard
RAM up to the max 64mb. Then, instead of using virtual, get yourself a copy of
RAM Doubler. That at least makes the 64mb ceiling possible to deal with.

Finally, apart from some high-end things, 8.6 and 9.0 seem pretty much the
same to me, although admittedly I may not know what I am talking about. I
remember I once was interesed in putting iTunes on my main Powerbook, and
contemplated moving to OS9, but then I found a patch that would allow iTunes to
be used
it 8.6.

Anyway, good luck, and have fun! Patiently upgrading is half the excitement
of resurrecting old 'books!

Agreed. However, with a G3, I *do* recommend OS 9, especially if you have
full RAM. I ran 9.1 on my 1400+G3/333 and it wasn't too bad.

I've tried OS 9.1 on all three of the 1400 flavors and even with 64MB
of RAM they don't run nealry as quick as with OS 8.6. I have always
put OS 8.6 back on the 1400's because it they were too slow.

Without a G3 upgrade in a 1400 it will not handle OS 9 very well.

About the same as my machine. Loads slowly, but works fine.
The hard drive will be a bit cramped.

Re: 1400 & Mac OS 9

2006-01-16 Thread Caleb Cupples
With those specs, I would clearly advise upgrading the RAM in your
1400. It really takes 64 MB of RAM to really make 9 sing, at the least.
Of course, I haven't run 9 on anything less than a G3 Lombard with 192
MB of RAM and the 400 MHz processor, so I can't speak for a 1400.
