I came across a PM 4400 that was very slow, we did a big lowlevel
format and a clean install, I also installed FINDER FIXER set it at
maximum and set the diskcache to it's maximum aswell. (I know that
without that my PM 7300 will be quite sluggish)
How long ago was it since you did defrag ? speed disk?
How much ram ? (I am sure it was in the original message - but I
mixed several questions up in here - so I am not sure exactly)?

You really should be experiencing any stalls (although running slow might be
expected considering it's age). What OS version are you running?

Also, what did you have virtual memory set to? It should never be more than
twice the amount of physical RAM and would be quite happy with setting it to
1MB over.

Well, that didn't seem to make any difference, but I also turned off virtual
memory (I have 144 megs) and that made the difference! It still stalls a
little, bet never longer than about 30 seconds.

Before the change I was watching the clock this morning: 11:43, 11:46,
11:48, 11:51, 11:53.

Really annoying.

I think the real solution is going to be an up grade to a PowerBook G4
someday, but it is working pretty well now at least.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'll now try IE and iTunes at the same time see how slow that is, likely not
much change from barely usable.

Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't realize I had set the clock to automatic
update. I noticed it updated 45 minutes ago, I have set it to manual. Maybe
it will get rid of my biggest gripe on my PowerBook so far!

Nothing in the server folder.

an alias in the server folder that tries to connect to something
remote ? the date and time automatic timeset is trying to reach the
atomic clock server ? choose manual update in the control panel
