It uses a smaller RAM footprint and is coded specifically for a Mac, not ported from Windows like IE and Netscape. Mild point of historical accuracy: Netscape was never '...ported from Windows...', and ironically, IE and Netscape are both derived from the same basic code: a Unix X11 application developed at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/ called Mosaic, ( http://www.w3.org/History.html see 1993) They're the same place that developed the mainstay Telnet application for the Mac, called NSCA Telnet, btw. IE is derived from a commercialized version of NSCA Mosaic called Spyglass, and Netscape is the brainchild of one of the original Mosaic developers, Marc Andresson. That IE is a gaping, oozing, bug-ridden, insecure wound of an application, therefore, is *entirely* Microsoft's fault. (sorry, I spent a large part of yesterday cleaning up some PC's infested with spyware, because the users are too stupid to not use IE.) Netscape has been simultaneously developed for Unix, Macs and Windows since it's inception: http://www.hnehosting.com/mirrors/Origin_of_a_Browser/1/a.html I remember arguing (successfully) to use Mosaic (such a hassle, you needed a separate application to view JPEG files), later Netscape (which had built-in JPEG support!!) as our default browser when we got web access here in the College in 1994, largely because it was cross-platform versus Cello, which was PC only. -- Bruce Johnson University of Arizona College of Phar macy Information Technology Group Institutions do not have opinions, merely customs -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... In March of this year I asked that same question and was answered by this mailing group so I am happy to pass on the solution that worked for me. I have a Powerbook 3400c/240 using OS 8.1 and did not want to upgrade because everything except the browser (Netscape Communicator 4.79) was working fine. I was advised to download iCab and I did so. What a relief. It copes with most web pages. http://www.icab.de/ Netscape Archived Client Products http://wp.netscape.com/download/archive/client_archive47x.html Some odd pages will still freeze the pages but that is life until you can catch up with current web design. Okay I've gotten my wireless card installed now (Thank you!) and am able to get internet access. However, I need to upgrade my browser if possible. I cannot seem to find older versions of internet explorer for download. Does anyone have any suggestions for a browser I could use? I prefer internet explorer but am willing to change. I am working with a Powerbook 1400cs with os 8.0. ___ IMHO Many people love IE. I think it's the worst torture a browser can impose on the user. I would recommend Netscape 4.79 as a reasonable alternative. You might even find it on your OS install disk.. I have tried IE in many versions for 5 years.. It is a pain. And I have heard all of the arguments before. -- Adrian -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... IE 5 runs ok on mine, icab seemed pretty horrendous. Opera actually is quite likable on an old mac like that.
