Re: Cheap wifi card 802.11b..need to confirm

2005-05-04 Thread Beniamino Cenci Goga
Thanks, Ben.
Just to confirm, this is a 16-bit PC Card that will
work in most any PowerBook before and after upgrading
to Gold status, and will work in either Classic or
OSX?

It is a 16-bit car and after the upgrade (which is actually what
happens to regular Airport cards into iBook or compatible PowerBooks)
it just become 128-bit and still work in 9 and X.

I have fleshed all the three Lucent/orinoco silver that I own and I
use them with the WS, the Kanga, the 1400, the 5300 ***and*** the
190!!!

It will also work on the 540: actually on every Mac with a PC card slot.
And it works also with the PB G4 aluminiun... mre speculation.

I have been looking for a cheap wifi for my 1400.
I just snagged a Lucent Orinoco Silver for Mac from eBay for $ 10.00
They have been going for $ 20 or more. The downside is the seller only
ships by UPS ground. Much cheaper by mail but I am still saving. have
not seen any cheaper.

The seller has more of these. I am not getting anything for telling
this list . I just thought I would inform listers as these seem to bee
in demand.

The page I referred to the other day says the silvers can be flashed
to Gold specs.

If you are interested email off list and I will send info
I picked one of these up a year ago for the higher price and convinced
the seller to ship it via mail to Canada, UPS being even more ridiculous
up here. They are incredible cards, working perfectly with all three
OSes I have tried it with. Haven't tried the flashing to Gold but I'm
only on B so it probably wouldn't change anything. Card is very fast and
very stable. If the antenna is cheap, you might consider it as summer is
coming (up here anyway) and the backyard beckons.
Thanks for the notice, I may pick up another couple.

Basically it changes the encryption to 128 bit.
To be specific it adds 128 bit encryption. It still retains the 64
bit encryption (aka 40bit).
