Re: Lind BU500 for PPC?
In a message dated 9/2/01 2:13:06 PM, [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: What is Wish I Were, please? I Wish I Were is a control panel which allows one to set the mach identifier of one's Mac to something it isn't, on a temporary basis, such as during a software install. A typical application would be to make one's PPC-upgraded Quadra appear like a 7100 in order to install a version of MacOS which is not officially supported on the PPC-upgraded Quadra, but is supported on the 7100, and which would indeed work on that Quadra (the PPC-upgraded Quadra and the 7100 both have 601 CPUs) if one could get beyond the install process. So, the strategy is: 1) install the control panel, 2) change the mach to, say, that of a 7100, 3) perform the new MacOS install, 4) change the mach back, 5) boot the new MacOS. In the specific case of Lind BU500, the mach would be changed from that of a PPC-equipped 500 to that of a 68K-equipped 500. One source is: http://macfixit.pair.com/library/tul/Wish.sit.hqx Using this tool, one can install OS 8.5.1 on a 500 ... I've done that ... and some have claimed OS 9 can also be installed. -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Lind BU500 for PPC?
The same question occurred to me, so I've been doing a bit of research...now, I don't claim to fully understand this, but every model of Mac has what's called a Gestalt ID, which appears to be something akin to its fingerprint. Thus when a piece of software is trying to work out the best way to install itself, or needs to know what system its on, it checks the Gestalt ID and adjusts itself accordingly. Wish I Were lets you alter the Gestalt ID so that you can fool the software into thinking that, say, your PB540 is really a Quadra. People seem to use this to install software (typically OS software) on supposedly unsupported Macs (e.g. The 540 isn't supposed to run OS8.5, even with a PPC upgrade, but Wish I Were can fool the installer into running). Unfortunately this utility doesn't seem to have been updated since about '96, so the models you can pretend to be stop somewhere around the pre-G3 Powermacs. If it's been updated (or something similar exists) I'd be very interested to hear. HTH Mike On 2/9/01 10:08 pm, Jane Thompson [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: What is Wish I Were, please? Re: Lind BU500 for PPC?
Thanks, again, Mike! This looks like a very cool utility, which I've already downloaded, and will be looking for an update by anyone. Jane -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Apparently, some applications are checking the mach number at the very beginning, but these applications are not actually dependent upon the presence or absence of specific features. It had not occurred to me to set the mach number to the machine's previous incarnation. Good catch! -- PowerBooks is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
