Yeah, I know and it makes me sad that my PB 1400 that i got back in
1996 is dying. I am considering a new iBook, however I still have
some looking to do.

That problem is fixed but now I have a bigger problem. When I put in

the computer shits off right away

If you are using a Palm Pilot, turn off the HotSync monitor. At least
on 6320s and PB 190's it steals the serial and printer ports from
AppleTalk, so maybe the same works in your case.

You could try disabling any PC Card extensions in the extension folder. FWIW

I will try to fix this, but I know it cannot be the logic board,
because the sound was from the PC card slot, without the car in the
slot the machine runs wonderfully! I just can't understand what
caused this.

Unplug your PB, take the battery out, then use something to gently
wedge open the pcmcia slot doors; then shine a penlight into the
opening. You should be able to see if the pins are bent over. If they
are I'd disassemble the Powerbook, then gently straighten them with a
pair of fine needle nose pliers or fine-tip hemostats.

Something like this helps a great deal,
and adds that Rick Moranis-like total geek chic to your wardrobe ;-)

The bad news is that if THAT was why you got the crackling noise and
smoke smell from the PB, something on the logic board was doing the
crackling and smelling.

It worked fine before what?

If the card isn't recognized as an network device, then it's either:

A prefs issue, delete the prefs and reset the card

A driver issue, try re-installing the driver

A card issue, perhaps it died.
