I don't know whether I'll get a cheap 1400/117, or get a 1400/166, but when I do, I'll be sure to have some questions. I'd highly recommend a 133 or 166 if you don't plan to ever upgrade the CPU. The 117 didn't have a level 2 cache, which means it's an extra 30 percent slower, in addition to the clock speed disadvantage. I'm just looking for a fairly light machine that I can carry to classes without having to worry too much about it being stolen, or anything like that. I'm also needing to do light graphics work, but nothing too hard. I also do a few presentations, which is something my little greyscale 190 has a problem with. Sounds like the 1400 would be great for you. The 1400/133 or 166 would handle any of those tasks with ease, and it's not a likely candidate for theft. The 3400 is faster and more capable, but it's also a beast at 7.5 pounds, and the keyboard is a turkey compared to the 1400's. Okay, shameless plug (again): you can read my FAQ on the PowerBook 1400 online (free to read online) at: http://www.freshfiltered.com/MacFAQ/PB1400FAQ.html It is built like a tank. I recovered two that were broken - one by cleaning out some coca cola that had been spilled into it, and the other just by replacing a HD and reseating some items (this one had clearly been badly dropped as the case was cracked a little, and to crack a PB1400 case you have to basically throw them against a wall). So, incredibly tough little nuts, not very fast, quite heavy, but excellent excellent excellent keyboards! I own 2, one that has a G3 upgrade, and a backup with a crappy CS screen and 117Mhz processor (more an organ donor just in case the good one dies). The problem is that even my 190 attracts attention in my neck of the woods. I only know two other Mac users, and both of them have new machines. One has a PowerMac G5, and the other has a PB G4. By the way, are there funky OS 7.5 stickers out there? My 1400 has one of the custom shells and a Biohazard sticker. If all you're doing with it is writing, I don't think you can beat a 1400. I use mine all the time for writing, it's my preferred keyboard of all I use. I agree. If all you are doing is writing save your money, get the 1400. However, if you are wanting to do more than go for the G4. I love mine. It does all that I need it to do. And that is a lot. I type a lot and play some games on it and the keyboard is better than my dad's Wallstreet (I think) but if you are opt for doing some more things and need a very fast machine a G3 or G4 is a better deal. Well if that's the case then a 1400 would be great. If you get a 1400c then graphic work is pretty good. I have one and it is nice to carry around and use just about anywhere, however becasue it have a build-in drive slot it may be a little big for some in which case you may want a Power Book 2400 instead. The PB 1400 is a durable machine I found out from mu uses, and mine was broken, the screws that held the thing together where gone and I use duck tape to fix it and it an still withstand a lot! It didn't have a CD but did have 2 x PSU's! 24MB RAM and now a 6GB HD (so has my Pismo) and a wireless card (not much luck with that yet) and have ordered a reasonable battery from a trusted seller on eBay (I've previously bought a CD and a processor upgrade for the 1400 from him) It has ethernet in place of a modem card but since I moved the card I've lost ethernet :-( It worked previously so I can only assume it's down to me fiddling I also have a G3 Pismo that I'm about to put on eBay. The G3 is a better computer than the 1400 hands down - but it's keyboard sucks. On top of that the keyboard just looks cheap and nasty, like all that multi coloured translucent junk that came out in the wake of the 'Fruit' iMacs. I have an iMac rev C and a G3 233 as my main and backup machines The 1400 is a nice robust machine - let's face it, if we all had the choice we'd go for the top of the range PowerBook Back on earth I intend to use my 1400 for basic wp and will use it as a as a glorified PDA/email/light surfing mobile around the flat (apartment to you USA types ;-) ) My master plan is to get a Mini as a main machine and stick my 20 Apple monitor on it I'm quite happy to spend some money on the 1400 for the same reason others have mentioned - the keyboard. It is superb. have the following: PB100, 180, 540, 1400, 5300 and a G3 and the 1400 has the best keyboard of all of them Why not get both? Now, as far as durability goes, is the 1400 pretty tough, or do you have to be fairly gentle with it, as I really need a durable, reliable machine. Then again, from the nickname, it must be. Caleb -- I have not dropped it yet . But It has moved a lot and has been banged around a bit. Never a whimper from it. I really like it. At a stock 166 MHz it handles things outside the house just fine. Even some 1024X960 pics in Photoshop. With only 40 MB RAM and an 18 MB overhead in RAM from running OS 9.1 ( because I like the features and I couldn't find my *.5 disk when I needed a reinstall). 8.6 is certainly better for the RAM limits though. And I don't like a constantly grinding hard drive so I don't use VM. I have a 1400c/166 I use sometimes when I can just so my AlG4 doesn't get stolen. The G4 kinda attracts attention. And there are lots of 1400's and add-ons for sale. And lots of cool stuff you can get for a 1400. I am not very good at typing, have big clumsy fingers and the 1400's keyboard works good for me and I think it has a better feel than my G4 Powerbook's keyboard. It all depends on what you want to do with it. I just posted a PB 1400 for sale . It's good machine, I've loaded a lot of desktop publishing programs on it. I like to use the 1400 for writing and doing light design work. If I'm designing a business card or newsletter, a lot of times I'll start on the 1400 (So I can work while watching TV) and than finish the job on my desktop a G3 333mhz tower. If you're interested - I have a 133mhz 1400 that's for sale. It'll come with Photoshop 5.5, Quark 4.1, Pagemaker 6.5 Arcobat 4.0 (full program), MS Office 2001 installed on it already. $60 that includes PH if your in US. I'll take Paypal or check, etc. I'm selling because I just got 2 other laptops.
