Not sure it's that, because (near as I can tell) it happens on EVERY page,
no matter how simple. And it doesn't happen in any other browser.

That said, maybe I'll have to check out the newer vintages of NS.

Amen Bruce!
The DOM Inspector, Venkmen (JavaScript debugger), tabs
Mozilla/NS rocks!

Though mainly for developers and those that do more than just browse the web. I depend
on Mozilla 99% of the time for work and play. NOTHING on the Mac side can come close
to all the technologies available. By that I mean, Mozilla is the IE Windows for the
Mac. It has all the fancy objects that IE only lets the Windows users have that
businesses rely on to build app.

Safari is great and fast, but doesn't offer the meat that Mozilla has to offer
businesses and developers.

Not saying everyone should use Moz/NS though. Just don't knock it and the hard work
the developers put in on it daily, mostly free too. Without it, Mac browsing and Mac
web applications for business is a joke as no other browser offers the tools.

All apps have flaws, after all, they are all built by people.

Re: netscape 7 hangs on a 3400 ?

2003-06-04 Thread phiori
the beauty of tabs is that you don't have 400 windows open. Floating around, each one
smaller than the last, having to move them around to get to the one underneath (unless
you use the window menu).

Tabs are very handy. Kind of like IE Mac's placeholder only much more efficient and
better laid out.

For those with NS 6+ issue. Trash your Netscape preferences and try again. That clears
up 90% of the hanging issue.

Also, the download and redraw issue from 4.x version is due to divs/layers. Any real
html programmer would have added code to prevent it (Dreamweaver even adds it by
default when you insert a layer).

6 & 7+ are vastly different beasts among themselves let alone a complete re-write of
the 4.x codebase.

7 is Mozilla 1.0 based. Very fast pageloads, very fast response.
Mozilla 1.4rc1 is even faster. 1.5 will challenge Safari in speed as well.

If all you do is surf pages, use IE. It is sufficient.
Don't use any Netscape below 6.1 else you'll suffer from bugs and performance, much
like OS X, 10.1 is the lowest version that isn't completely washed.

Under OS X, my favourite browser is Camino, bar none. It's so amazingly fast

No. Also Netscape 7 (AKA Mozilla 1.1 is a complete, from the ground-up
rewrite of the entire program. The *only* thing it shares in common with
NS 4.x is the name. However, it takes somewhat more computing horsepower
and memory than the old Netscape.

BTW, I'm not so sure I see what the big deal of tabbed windows is.
In IE I can open a link into a new window that's behind my other windows.
Don't knock it until you've tried it. Tabbed browsing is addictively
useful, particuarly when doing searches. (I'm in Mozilla about 4-7 hours
of any given day, as it's my e-mail and browser...depending on what
development I'm doing...we use the browser as the client for all our
database stuff, so I'm in a browser a LOT)

And IE just plain sucks donkey parts under OSX. It's like Microsoft
deliberately tried to see how many ways they could screw it up.

Mozilla/Netscape will be taken off my computers when you pry them out of
my cold dead fingers...

To be fair, I've not tried any NS version post-4.7x, mostly because with
their track record of bad browsers I've been reluctant to give them another
chance.

I think you are missing out on a great browser.
I'm using Netscape 7.01 and it is faster than IE and iCab, plus the tabbed windows

Based on my personal experience using Netscape v7.01 on several Macs and PowerBooks, I
heartily recommend it.

My sentiments exactly, having recently moved over to X I can confirm that
Safari 'Does what it says on the tin' ;-)
It feels faster than IE and so far has had no problems with page rendering,
I am thinking of making it my default browser and just keeping IE as a
backup.

The ONLY reason I keep any version of NS around is because that's what they
had at my daughter's school. She's used to IE now, so I may just free up
the space soon. Oh, and I used to also need it very rarely for the odd page
that was coded to NS, but I've not seen one of those in quite some time.
The combo of IE 5.1 and iCab get me 100% of all pages I ever go to. (Oddly,
the Apple Store doesn't render correctly in IE for me, but it works fine in
iCab...)

Ever since I discovered that there are browsers that don't need to render a
page successfully THEN BLANK IT OUT AND COMPLETELY RERENDER IT AGAIN, I've
virtually abandoned NS.

As far as I'm concerned, this is some sort of cosmic payback to NS for their
early Microsoft-like attitude of "Let's keep introducing non-standard
Netscape-isms that people will use and then their pages will only render
correctly in Netscape."

To be fair, I've not tried any NS version post-4.7x, mostly because with
their track record of bad browsers I've been reluctant to give them another
chance. IE & iCab work just fine for now and when I finally go to OS X,
there's Safari. I just can't see any good reason to waste time w/ NS ever
again.

This is their minimum recommended requirements. I have had Mozilla and
Nestcape 6+ running on my 1400c with the original 166 MHz processor, and it
runs even better now with my 333 G3 Sonnet upgrade.

Trash the Netscape preferences file and try to run it again. That has been
affecting many upgrading. It's even bit me on my G4 OS X machine.

Could be that 9.x is the earliest supported. But as far as hardware goes,
you should be able to run it fine on your machine. Like I said I've ran it
for years on my 1400c with 48MB Ram and 166MHz processor.

Mozilla 1.0.1 and maybe 1.2 will be as high as you can go without running OS
X. 1.3+ are OS X only builds.

Netscape 7.01 = Moz 1.01
