It could also be a poorly seated display
connector - you might try checking to make sure the display
connector is fully seated by disconnecting, then reconnecting it.

Thanks for the help. After reseating the display cables, the computer
screen popped up just fine. I hadn't properly connected them when I swapped
the screens. The fix took less than 15 minutes though I'd been playing with
it for several days.

Software or hardware problem?

:-(

That sounds like a hardware problem to me... I think it's probably a
red herring that it seems to go haywire when you launch certain
software.

It sounds like you may have damaged the screen cables when you
swapped displays. It could also be a poorly seated display connector
- you might try checking to make sure the display connector is fully
seated by disconnecting, then reconnecting it.

I sincerely hope it's not a data cable problem, though, as that can
be relatively expensive to fix.

Good luck!
Drew

In no particular order:

1) bad LCD cable (swap cable)

2) bad LCD (swap old screen back)

3) bad VRAM (save for last - replace VRAM)

4) metal bits on the VRAM pins (use canned air to blow on VRAM)
