Re: quickcam and powerbooks

2003-07-08 Thread David Allen
I use a color Quickcam with my 1400 for video conferencing often. Works as
well under 9.1 as it did under 8.1 and uses the same software. ( I'm using
version 2.0.2, but I also use the Akua Nine11 extension version 1.3, which
may or may not be helping this app work correctly under 9.1 )

The Quickcams are older technology, but their portability makes them a
great little device. The video doesn't compare to the camcorder that I use
with my main workstation, but try to fit a camcorder in a pouch in a PB
carry case.

The Logitech site doesn't have any FAQ entries, but the old Connectix

mentions 9.0; but that entry may predate 9.1- or it may be right, and

Anyone know? I'd like to throw a quickcam in the bag for my
 1400/9.1, if it would work.

Is there a reason to run 9.1 over 9.0 on G3 1400's? It's been so
 long, I forget.

 thanks,

 Brian

OK guys, thanks for the success stories.

I have a greyscale serial quickcam that the imaging chip is damaged (I
blasted it with too much light using it on a microscope, be careful if you
do that :) but it works on my old 8.6 desktop, the image is just kinda
faint in the middle.

I downloaded both the 2.1.2 and 2.1.3 quickcam drivers from Logitech's ftp
site; when I try and run QuickPict or any other util though, those
softwares tell me the application has quit as it needs an update to work
with the newer OS or similar.

This is 1400/G3, 9.1, Quicktime 5.x.

If someone has drivers that work, can you tell me the version of the 3
quickcam extensions (last in the extensions drawer, with the ~ in their
name, and what quicktime you are using (since this cam uses quicktime for
everything that might matter too).

Thanks,

Brian

Worked on a 7600 under OS 9.1 so I've no doubt it'll work on your Powerbook.

I don't know what's up with this, the 2.1.2 and 2.1.3 installers both
refuse to run on my 9.1 1400 but Bruce's and others setups seem fine.
I need to try them on my 9.1 desktop in case it's something specific
that I have on the PB conflicting.

It is nice to have hope though. I actually have a color and a grey one
of these cams on the way from ebay- prices too good to refuse- and was
wondering what the heck I was going to DO with them if they would not
be useful dropped into the laptop bag

Brian
Nine11 by Akua (http://www.akua.com/Software/Nine11/) is what I had in
mind. It allows software to run in 9 that would give a 119 error (thus
Nine11).

Nine11 (That's how you need to look for it.) I found it in about 5 seconds
with Sherlock.) The URL is: http://www.akua.com/Software/Nine11/

I use it in all of my PCI workstations and PBs. Works great. Just drop the
24k extension in your extensions folder and restart. Haven't found it to
conflict with anything in any of my very fat systems.

Enjoy

I have run a greyscale QuickCam on both a 1400cs and a WallStreet, both
with 9.1.

Works OK, but it is still greyscalw and a bit grainy.

I have a retail 9.1, so that is what I use. Supposed to be more stable,
but I couldn't say from personal experience.
