I think Internet Explorer is fine. It's quite a common browser and can
easily handle large files.

versions around and I am not sure what one to get. I run OS 9.2.2 (on

programming/construction. I am just looking for a simple one package
download, hit the button install, good to run version of Mozilla. The
sites I go to indicate that I need to download a number of files and
construct my browser...where can I go?

Hi Martin,

You might also try the Opera browser. Opera 6 is the last version that
works under OS8/9. I actually like iCab a little better than Opera, but
Opera seems to be more stable on my machines and gives reasonable

For System 7, maybe you should give Apple's old Cyberdog a try. (Some

Re: better browser for OS9.2.2

2005-02-18 Thread martin
Hi list creatures,
I tried tonight to make a reservation on BC Ferries (up here in
Victoria BC Canada), and their website shunted me to a page which
tersely informed me that Internet Explorer for Mac won't work on
their site, due to a known bug etc.

I recall that Microsoft stopped work on IE for Macs in 2003, because
Apple was pushing Safari ( and wouldn't share MacOS code ); they also
stopped developing IE as a standalone program for Windows, instead
planning to integrate it into their OS ( again! ). . .

BC ferries' page suggested I use Safari, Mozilla, or Netscape instead.
Now, I've been happy with IE, find it much smoother than Netscape
(which I used for years), or at least compatible with more sites.
I've accumulated hundreds of bookmarks (ie Favorites), and umm, I'm
USED to it. I can run earlier versions on my earlier Powerbooks (when
I have time to spare), which saves me learning a new protocol/set of
commands.

If I were to adopt a new browser, which one would be an intelligent
choice? Keeping in mind that I plan to run my Powerbook into the
ground, running OS9.2.2. My older 'books run System 7.1, so I assume
their Internet lifespan is severely limited.

Safari requires OSX, as far as I know.
I'm not sure Netscape is still evolving. Has it improved in the last
few years?
Mozilla seems to be a work in progress.

I'm open to all suggestions, and just want something reliable and
easy to use, like I have now.
Input from list members who've been down this path, would be valuable
and appreciated.
Particularly if the information is current :)

Many thanks.
m

AFAIK there are

Internet Explorer 5.x
Netscape 7
iCab 2.x

Explorer is already out. So try the other ones. iCab you can find
at www.icab.de. There should be a free version and iCab is the only
one for OS Classic which is still under development.

Mozilla seems to be a work in progress.
Mozilla/Netscape (they're the same code base) has been a good stable
browser since about version 0.8 (which was Netscape 6.2)

It's vastly improved over the old 4.x versions of Netscape.
The last version running on OS 9, Mozilla 1.2 (iirc) was quite stable
for me, so long as I fed it enough memory. IIRC I gave it like 48 megs.

There's a build of Mozilla 1.3.1 called Wamcom that is also nice,
though it's oddly slow in places; but it's based on a later version of
Mozilla that offers a lot of goodies.

Why not upgrade to OS X? Firefox and Safari are VERY good on it.

Re: better browser for OS9.2.2

2005-02-18 Thread Dan Sirks
OSX contains a 9.2.2 operating system that probably will allow you to
continue to use your old software. I use both interchangeably and so far,
except for my printer driver, everything works on OSX and it switches
automatically to 9.2.2 to use classic software. The change is almost
imperceptible and immediate to the user. However, check your printer driver
to make sure that there is one for OSX first. It is a nuisance when the
printer (Epson CX5400) doesn't work on OSX. If you try OSX, I don't think
you will be disappointed.

Your suggestion that I upgrade to OSX is well taken, Bruce.
However, I've been upgrading hardware, Operating Systems, and
software constantly since 1987. Working in the graphics/design field,
I use the following apps almost every day:

Photoshop, InDesign, Freehand (and Illustrator), Pagemaker (and Quark
Xpress), Vectorworks, ClarisCAD (still rocks!), UpFront,
DesignWorkshop, Acrobat and many more, all in OS9.2.2. Some of these
aren't even available for OSX, some run only in Classic Mode (sorta
like running Windows 3.1 over DOS I reckon), and a few of the apps I
rely on are now orphaned/abandoned, yet I'd be lost without them.

When OSX came along shortly after I invested in my G4, I dug in my
heels: this new OS would require me to upgrade virtually everything,...

Hardly. It's like running a OS 9 app on your mac.

So continue to run them. This

Basically same here.

On my 3400/180/9.1 I use iCab for everything except
certain sites that rely on CSS for functionality. I
don't mind it looking a bit ugly like iCab 2.9.8 does
to CSS if it is still functional. I just have iCab
mimic IE javascript when necessary rather than using
IE, though I do use Wamcom Mozilla 1.3.1 for
downloading large files. It downloads faster than
iCab, almost twice as fast it appears... no scientific
data to throw out there.

On my iMacs I use Safari 95% of the time and Firefox
if something doesn't work, which has only happened a
couple times that I recall. I keep a copy of IE on my
computer for installing plug-ins that only install
into IE then just drag them to the plug-in folder in
iCab or Safari.

I use iCab and Mozilla with OS 9.1 on a PB1400. iCab does not have a
mail application. I can not get my book marks into Mozilla from iCab
so use iCab for web sites and Mozilla for mail.

On the old G4 desktop, I use OS 10.3.8 for Safari and Mail then boot
into OS 9.2.2 for using all of the old software. You will like Safari
and Mail.

::chuckles::  I am pre-press for a four-color print
shop and I do a littlevery little... design work
on the side. At work I have all the newest software,
though I also have my own collection of software at
home that I personally own. Due to the fact that I
don't do very much with my on the side business I find
it hard to justify spending money upgrading my
personal set of software and my morals won't let me
take the software from work.

So on my computers at home I use Illustrator 6.02,
Photoshop 5.5, InDesign 1.52, Freehand 8.01b,
Dimensions 2.0, ImageStyler 1.0, PageMill 3.0 and
BBEdit Lite 4.6.

I use these on my Powerbook 3400 in 9.1 and my Bondi
iMac in 10.3.8 and all of them work just fine in
Classic.

In fact out of all the graphic software that you
mentioned the only one that has a little quirk working
in Classic is Quark. In Quark 4.0-4.11 the screen
redraws are a bit screwy, but just hitting the
windowpane thing twice fixes that.

As far as PageMaker ::holds up a cross to ward
away evil:: open them in InDesign and never look
back.

PageMaker files are the Debil! ---Waterboy quote
;D

The best part of running in Classic rather than
actually in 9.1-9.2.2 is when an application crashes
your computer doesn't. Sure sometimes it will take
out classic but you will find the longer you are in X
the more you will prefer native X applications so you
can take advantage of the multi-tasking capabilities.

In Classic the Print Manager prints documents one at a
time no matter whether you are printing to different
printers or not.

With X native applications I've had files ripping to
my Quicksetter and printing to my laserprinter at the
*exact* same time while I also had Virtual PC
running CorelDraw 10 and Publisher in XP and Photoshop
CS, InDesign Cs, Illustrator CS, Freehand 10, Quark
6.1, Acrobat 5 (Acrobat 6 is slower than hell),
Acrobat Distiller 6.1, iTunes and Safari open in X.
Try doing that with a computer running in 9.1-9.2.2.

The RAM requirements of all those applications alone
would kill almost every computer. X apps release the
almost all their RAM when they are not actively
performing a task Classic apps always keep
whatever you have assigned to them even if they are
doing nothing and usually don't release it cleanly
when you quit an application anyways usually forcing a
restart after opening and closing several
applications.

As someone who spends 8-12 hours a day on a computer
doing pre-press the benefits of X, more specifically
Panther increase my productivity immensely. Before X
I used to lose half a day at least once a week from
getting some screwed up file or font from a customer
that took down my system. Now the only files that
give me hell are InDesign files that used to be Quark
files with Illustrator EPS's embedded. I've NEVER had
a problem with a native InDesign file.

just my two cents...
