Quite obvious to me that the 'multipart/alternative' is the cause for the

Notice how one is sent in plain text (Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit),
while the other is set to multipart (Content-type: multipart/alternative;
boundary=Apple-Mail-2-949890648)? the question is whose problem is this?
is PM doing something strange when it strips the multipart, or is it the
way Apple Mail encodes the message? Million dollar question that I won't
pretend to know the answer to.

I pick c. I get tons of mail from all sorts of clients, but only Mail
users send me what I've termed "echomail". The reason I don't believe it
is a PowerMail issue is because several of these Mail users can send me
normal mail -- in fact, it often changes from time to time for whatever
reason.

My guess is that they have it set to send HTML or Rich Text Format mail
which often sends two versions of the email: RTF version and a text
version for folks who have email clients that don't do HTML/RTF mail or
in which they turn off HTML mail. Something in the formatting, some
command or line PowerMail expects to see to format properly, shows both
versions instead of showing just one. I receive other mail which shows me
text with the HTML/RTF version hidden/attached as is supposed to be done,
so I put the blame on Mail.

Mail seems to have repetions of content

2003-06-25 Thread Midi

I am quoting the whole email because that is the only way to see the
issue. Notice that the content of the email is repeated and that the
repetition is merged with the signature line.

I use PowerMail, not Mail, and have noticed this with email coming from a
regular correspondent who uses Mail - all the time. (I have another
regular correspondent using Mail whose email never has this problem.) It
is really annoying when the email is long; when it is short like this
one, it isn't so bad as you see what is happening right a way.

As both my correspondent and Thomas could be assumed to be somewhat savy
computer users, I am wondering if it is:

a. an interaction of PowerMail and Mail
b. an interaction of Mail with the outgoing or incoming server
c. something in Mail.

In all cases I am receiving the mail with my mac.com address. My ISP is
Earthlink.

Using MacOS 9.2.2 on two different computers [Powerbook G3 Bronze and a

usually can't highlight received mail for copying or to print. However,
if I make a "reply to sender" document, I can do both. Then that can be
trashed. So it must be a property of the Powermail 4.1.3 software.

PDF works and has been another workaround - and with all the above done

Hi Robert,

There are two issues to look at: printer drivers and the error msg itself.

I might have missed this in subsequent posts but you don't say which 5000
(proper, N, DN, LE) you have or what type of printer it is (laser, ink,
desk,...) so I'll assume it the the HP LaserJet 5000 proper. The current
info on printer drivers for the HP LaserJet 5000 is as follows:

name:  hp LaserJet monochrome printing software and utility
  type:  Driver
  version:   1.31
  release date:  2003-4-2
operating system:  Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9, Mac OS X

The second issue is the error message. According to HP's web site, the
79.00FE message has been reported on the HP 5000 printer among others in
conjunction with Adobe InDesign. The simplest solution listed was to
export to PDF and print that. Perhaps something in the 4.x PowerMail is
triggering the same flaw. For more info, check out:

I would first try the updated drivers then the PDF option.

You should also know that the HP 5000 is reported as a discontinued
product on their website.

Finally, I would add the following bit of experience I and others have
had with HP products and Macs as of late. Their much vaunted reputation
of reliability, ease of configuration and use has taken quite a beating.
Witness the problems with the HP 1200 line and Mac OS X. Not pretty I
assure you. Also, when questioned regarding their support of Macs in
general, I have found it to be lukewarm at best.

Now I own not one but two HP printers: HP 990 and a rebadged HP 870
(stylewriter 6500) and both work fine. Still, I would no longer
automatically choose HP anymore. I would look long and hard at the
competition, even with laser printers.

Hope this helps.

In your original message you say PM prints fine to your epson printer but
not to your HP. However everything else seems to print fine to both printers.

This seems a little odd to me, but I'm curious about a couple of things.
I'm assuming if you can print from PM to the Epson, you can also print to
a PDF Preview document? try it and see (choose to print, then click the
"preview" or "save to pdf" button at the bottom of the print dialog...
maybe try both.)

If this fails, then there is something wrong in Postscript rendering to
the print device. It MIGHT be PM's fault, but I've never had such a
problem myself. If it succeeds, it COULD still be postscript rendering:
It COULD be in the HP driver or just PM's reaction with the HP driver.

Another test would be to switch your HP's driver to the Generic
Postscript driver and see if PM prints fine to it. If it does, then it's
definitely how PM is playing with HP. Whether that is a PM or HP support
issue, I don't know, though.

The upshot of these tests is you'll narrow the trouble a bit more,
hopefully, so we can pinpoint if there is programming issues or maybe a
reinstall of printer drivers or a new driver or trashing prefs or
anything might help.

This does seem to work for me since virtually all of my correspondents
use text only, so this also works as a spam filter. Where I do get
problems is with multipart/mixed, multipart/alternative and variations
thereof. Not sure how these multipart msgs are formed, unless its a
byproduct of MIME encoding. For these I use similar criteria to the
above except content type contains multipart/whatever.

These filters come immediately after my 'normal' filters which sort
mailing list stuff and so on.
