Patrick,

I've written a script that does just that and a bit more. It will remove
any named attachment and if you keep Spam to a folder to train SpamSieve
it will remove graphics (.gif, .jpg, etc) from your attachment. I can't
remember if I've sent it in to Wayne for the archive. It's called "Remove
Listed Attachments". If it's not there let me know and I'll send it along.

I have folders with several thousands of messages in then, they draw
instantly. The only time I see any noticible slow down is when I'm using
the video part of iChat.

there is already an apple script for doing so, you just add the type of
attachments you want trashed. it is called "sweep attachments" and can be
gotten of the pm apple script depository (see power mails site or power

Trashing unwanted attachments

2003-08-30 Thread Patrick Blum

Hi,

I'm trying to find a way to have emails with a specific type of
attachment - in this case the ".pif" and ".src" attachments sent with
emails from virus infected PCs - go directly to the trash when I receive
them.

A filter and/or script seems the answer, but I can't work out how to make
one that would recognise a particular type of attachment (as opposed to a
sender's name, an address or some content, etc).

I've been receiving over 100 of these emails a day through work and while
they don't harm my Mac, they are a nuisance. Any ideas welcome :-)

I'm using Powermail 4.1.3 on a G4 running OS X 10.2.6.

Instantly, really?? What kind of Mac are you using?

I'm using OS X 10.2.6, PM 4.2b8, on a Powerbook G4 550MHz. I've used PM
for a couple of years, and it has always been very slow to draw.

You don't say which version of PM and OS you using, but on OS 10.2.3 and
the non-beta version of PM 4.1.3 a folder of mine with 251 messages and 5

Slow drawing of message lists

2003-08-30 Thread Dan Webb

PowerMail takes a long time to draw a list of email messages. For
instance, when I switch to a folder that shows about 40 email messages,
it takes roughly one second to draw it. Are there any plans to speed it
up? Is there anything I can do to speed it up? I've tried displaying
only a minimal set of columns, which helped a little.

[ANN] PowerMail 4.2b8/fin. candidate 4 now available

2003-08-30 Thread PowerMail info

Greetings,

We are hereby pleased to announce the availability of PowerMail 4.2 beta
8/final candidate 4, which can be directly downloaded from:

=

=

This release is NOT public; it is exclusively aimed at members of the
PowerMail-discuss and PowerMail-testing lists, as well as to folks who
kindly tested b1 and reported items that we may have fixed below:

--
What's new in the PowerMail 4.2b8/final candidate 4 (from version 4.2b6)
--
- The preferences for indexing are now functional, and we ask that you
test PowerMail with indexing DISABLED as well as enabled. (The ability to
disable indexing is especially useful in tight memory conditions on Mac
OS 9-8)
- Updated the command-key shortcuts for mark read/unread and show simple
header; this way, Mac OS X's Hide Others command key now works again in
PowerMail
- Added a command-key shortcut for view unread
- Fixed a memory allocation problem as well as another leak in a search buffer
- Fixed Mac OS 8.6 compatibility for good - there was a crash when
displaying search results
- PowerMail no longer imports contacts from the Apple address book which
contain no e-mail addresses
- Increased the default memory allocation under Mac OS 9-8
- PowerMail no longer requires Mac OS X spell-checking to be fully
initialized and therefore can be auto-launched on startup by Mac OS X
login items
- If a database was used by a prior beta version, we recalculate message
count for folders on first use in order to ensure that prior negative
values are cleared.

Known limitations:
This release is not packaged as a disk image but simply as a Stuffit archive
- Command-F should select the search field (when the search window was
already opened in background)
- The final version will also have other localized languages

* * * * * * *

Please discuss your findings either:
- on the PowerMail discussion list
- using the "Send a message to PowerMail support" option in the Help menu
of registered versions
- if needed, by private post to us at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Possible crash logs - with a description of the situations that might
have lead to them, are also of interest.

Thanks in advance, and kind regards,

The PowerMail development team

There is a product called SpamSlam that operates from your own computer,
it acts as a server and sends out an email requesting confirmation for
all addresses not on its white list. I beta tested it for a while and it
seemed fine but I decided against it because of the inconvenience factor.

Mail Trash bug

2003-08-30 Thread Geoff Roynon

I have recently started using PM 4.2B3 and have found a bug with the Mail
Trash handling. I have the option set to empty the trash when I quit
PowerMail. However this leads to an invalid item count in the Mail Trash
folder. For instance, if I have 10 items in the trash folder when I quit,
the next time I start PM the trash is empty (as expected) but the item
count is still 10.

If I empty the trash using the PowerMail menu command it clears the items
count correctly.

This is a minor problem.

My web hotel has SpamAssassin installed and all mail to my domain
goes thru that spam filter and it's working great. Check if your

What happens if you delete the .b64 and just try to open a .doc file?
Are they coming from windows users?
Do you know from the sender what the attachment is supposed to be?
If you don't need formatting you could have them send as text, either
saving as text, or cut and paste in the e-mail as text.
Do you have Word?
Has your PC user friend tried to open the attachments using WinZip? It
opens almost everything.
Can you access your mail at a web site and see what the attachment looks
like there?
Can your friends print out what they want to send you and snail mail it?

Works great. Lasts a long time.

I have an address book around 1650 addresses plus all the stock

I told them all to pardon my spam blocker message. I have them added to
my online address book once they email me.

I'm still logging on to the WEB MAIL part of Earthlink in order to clear
some messages, but after two months, the spam is no big deal, and no
spam in the inbox.

BTW, The Powermail Forum (and Adobe's Go Live forum) comes through just fine.
