Re: [NF] Vista and XP
Don't forget to setup your printer as a DHCP client or, if you wish, hard code an I/P way above your other computers (ie: router DHCP root = 198.168.1.0 -- Set printer to 198.168.1.199 and make sure the router range is 100 through 199 -- you get the idea..) The important thing with this network stuff is to make sure they're all on the same I/P root and SubMask. Once that's done, it's duck soup for the rest (unless the router craps out). Re: [NF] Vista and XP
ipconfig /allis your friend. Run this command in a DOS box on both machines. You will find out what device is serving out I/P addresses (if either of them is) and what the main root address is (198.168.1.1 or 198.168.2.1 or 198.168.0.0 or whatever the root DHCP series is). It will also tell you what I/P addresses your desktop and laptop think they are. It's possible that the one that isn't working has an I/P on a different root (198.168.x.), an I/P out of range for the router or the SUBMASK may be different. I've had no trouble setting the router to be a DHCP server and then setting all other computers to get I/P address from the DHCP server. You should also turn OFF ALL WINDOZE AND OTHER FIREWALLS on each machine! Your router, like mine, is probably keeping the world out fine so you don't need that crap. You can (and SHOULD) test your router with www.grc.com Shield's Up in a browser on any machine that's connected to the internet through the router. Mine tests as Stealth on all ports -- yours should too. john harvey wrote: > Usually, you need to set the dsl modem to be a gateway to the wireless > router/switch and all devices can get an ipaddress from the router. > > John > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf > Of Virgil Bierschwale > Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 8:03 PM > To: 'ProFox Email List' > Subject: RE: [NF] Vista and XP > > This is weird, but I don't have time to figure it out just now. > If you ever have this scenario, hook up vista by itself to the switch and > let it resolve the IP address. > > That will disable the XP box, but you can then hook it up to the router > instead of the switch and it will now find both of them. > > I just bought a router and switch the other day and I guess I'm going to > have to RTFM. > > Virgil Bierschwale > Armstrong and Skipper Real Estate > (830) 329-6774 Cell > (830) 864-4799 Fax > (830) 864-4726 Home > http://www.bierschwale.com > http://www.bierschwalesolutions.com > http://www.JobsForOurFuture.com/index.php > > > > -Original Message- > From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf > Of Michael Madigan > Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 8:00 PM > To: ProFox Email List > Subject: RE: [NF] Vista and XP > > Hardcode it then and see if it works. > > > --- Virgil Bierschwale <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > >> That's what it says, but I can't find it as all the >> "auto assign" boxes are >> checked. >> I'm taking mcafee off now just incase that's part of >> it. >> >> Virgil Bierschwale >> Armstrong and Skipper Real Estate >> (830) 329-6774 Cell >> (830) 864-4799 Fax >> (830) 864-4726 Home >> http://www.bierschwale.com >> http://www.bierschwalesolutions.com >> http://www.JobsForOurFuture.com/index.php >> >> >> >> -Original Message- >> From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] >> [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf >> Of Michael Madigan >> Sent: Wednesday, April 25, 2007 7:52 PM >> To: ProFox Email List >> Subject: Re: [NF] Vista and XP >> >> Are you using DHCP or hard-coding your IP? This is weird, but I don't have time to figure it out just now. If you ever have this scenario, hook up vista by itself to the switch and let it resolve the IP address. That will disable the XP box, but you can then hook it up to the router instead of the switch and it will now find both of them. I ordered a dell dimension 9200 with 2 gb ram and a 20" flatscreen because they had it on sale and I needed a development machine. My laptop has xp on it and its connected to a dsl modem, a router and a switch and it all works fine. When I hook up the desktop that has vista home on it, it gives me a IP address problem. My kids are on virgin (they have to buy their own minutes out of their allowance) and I'm considering switching over when my current contract expires. For a low volume user VM prepay is probably your cheapest alternative; as long as you buy the $20 worth of minutes every 90 days your unused minutes will roll over. They use the Sprint network, so the coverage is as good or bad as Sprint's is for your area. Here in Colorado, the urban areas are well covered but the rural coverage isn't anywhere near as good as Verizon's. The phones are pretty cheap, I saw a $10 one at Radio Shack, but the selection is fairly limited and there's no bluetooth or fancy smartphones. If you use your phone enough to want these features the prepay probably wouldn't be economical anyway. dt -- Dave Thayer Denver, CO ___ Post Messages to: ProFox@leafe.com Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/[EMAIL PROTECTED] ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice. The Thanks. I considered the versioning mechanism, but decided it could become a behemoth to maintain every individual update from each version to the next-- not to mention, if a single alter in a specific version fails for some reason, it causes more problems-- plus, creating a new database instead of just altering existing ones requires separate 'create table' scripts, or for it to run through the original create table and every alter table for the history of the entire application My VBS script(which I just converted very simply to .NET) is actually very simple. The XML spec is something like this: With numerous table entries. The script loops the tables, issuing "create table..." if they don't exist, and otherwise looping fields and adding, removing, and altering columns if necessary(I have a simple 'remove=true' attribute in the field spec to prevent having to compare all the fields). I just have to add index support to this architecture... Simple, extensible, re-usable-- I just create a different xml file for a different project. I actually just created a simple .NET application that will go out and update over a dozen such MSSQL(MSDE, really) databases using this method. -- Derek ___ Post Messages to: ProFox@leafe.com Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/[EMAIL PROTECTED] ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice. In past development, QA and beta environments, I've used xCase to synchronize changes between the xCase model and the target database. xCase also helpfully provides SQL change scripts, which I've captured and used to incrementally modify production databases. With Fox as the front end, I have used a "master" table on the target database that held the database version, say '42.' When an administrative front end connected, it queried the version number, then sent modification scripts to the back-end to update it to the current version, say, 42to43.sql, 43to44.sql and 44to45.sql. The administrator application that does this has to have god-like rights into the database. Note, too, you could add your own scripts, so if you needed to fill in a lookup table or do more complex manipulations you could do that, too. This has the additional benefit that front ends for clients could just check the target db and report "out of date database, contact your administrator." > can't find an easy way to do the same for indexes. I use an XML file > for my database definition. MSSQL database creation/modification/maintenance scripting/functions?
Hello. I'm sure I'm not the first to have the need for it-- I need a way to detect the current database setup(tables, fields, indexes) and alter the MSSQL database appropriately based on the current state. I have a small VBS script written that can do this for tables and fields using INFORMATION_SCHEMA.TABLES and INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS, but I can't find an easy way to do the same for indexes. I use an XML file for my database definition. Is there a better way? Some way to easily get the index information and create/modify them as needed? I'm sure I could probably use the sys tables in the master database, but I was hoping there might be something easier-- an API even... Dave - that is excellent!!! If I was still running a team of programmers I would print it out and pin it on the wall. Emulate Auto Fit from Excel
Hi, I am converting a excel spreadsheet to a report layout. In excel the Auto Fit feature was used to make sure the information always fitted (or made use of) the space available. [NF] Getting jump started - techniques...
Whil, I think that the secret is in the documentation of the system(s) you do before beginning the project. In a word (or three) Design, Design and Design. There is an excellent book called "The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master" by Andrew Hunt and David Thomas has some good reading in it regarding refactoring or generating code from projects that have been picked up again or from other people. Although not 100% relevant to your question but useful when coding in general, I particularly liked the following recommendations amongst some of my own: 1. Use the DRY Principle (Don't Repeat Yourself) Keep the low level knowledge in the code where it belongs and reserve comments for other high level explanations and simple diagrams. 2. Design Orthogonal Systems This effectively removes the "Effects Between Unrelated Things" and allows you to pick up projects/code without having to absorb the whole thing first, which is difficult after a layoff. In the book he describes a "non Orthoganal" system to be akin to a helicopter. Only three controls but they all have a mutual effect on each other. The collective moves you up and down but when you descend the helicopter moves its nose down and begins to rotate to spiral - a secondary effect. Lower the left hand lever and you then need to add compensating backward movement to the right hand stick and push the right pedal erc etc. Those of you who have tried to hover a helicopter will understand that it is a constant juggling act trying to balance all the interacting forces. Modifying a system designed in this way is consequently a nightmare - so stop it happening. Designing a project in layers provides a level of abstraction because each layer should only use the abstractions provided by the layers below it. 3. Keep your code decoupled Always ensure your code remains isolated from the implementation of other outside code 4. Avoid global data Not always possible I know, but a good rule of thumb to keep to if possible. 5. Always be critical of your own code Look for any opportunity to improve structure and the resultant code when revisited will require the minimum amount of modification. It is always more difficult to remember what you "thought you should do to code 6 months ago" as opposed to "what you have to do now" to improve a system 6. Testing Have a fully documented set of tests to carry out after any modifications. That way the "oh, I'll just add this code...I'm sure that it won't affect anything else" phrase won't come back to haunt you. 7. Use the "Tracer Bullets" technique As it says in the book "There are three ways to fire a machine gun in the dark" a. Find out the exact conditions, location of the target, specification of your machine gun and use the manufacturer's tables to calculate the exact elevation and bearing to fire on. If you estimated correctly you will hit the target. b. Close your eyes and spray bullets wildly in the general direction of the target - how many systems have you seen where this is the norm? or c. Use tracer bullets These are bullets loaded onto the ammo belt at intervals which burn phosphorous when fired and "glow in the dark". If the tracer bullets are hitting the target then you know damned well that the intervening bullets are as well. Inserting code into a system the equivalent of "tracer bullets" gives instant feedback and can produce major changes in the way you approach a project. Rather than designing a "fixed specification" allow the tracer bullets to refine the final "system" and don’t be afraid to refactor the design based upon the "tracer bullet" results. This is a much better method than prototyping in the normal sense of the word as it can give actual factual performance data back immediately. The added benefit is that you will have something to demonstrate very early on in the project - which customers like. Leave these tracer bullets in to indicate the current status of NEW code that needs to be generated or features that need to be added 8. Save all your estimates and be critical of them when making NEW estimates. It is really easy to just say "No problem - I can do that easily". How often have you done this and when revisiting the code the 5 minute job took 5 hours. If you ever make an incorrect estimate, then LEARN from it by finding out WHY it was incorrect. 9. Use the Rubber Duck Technique If possible when trying to pick up a project take time out to explain the project design to another person. Their head should just be nodding like a "rubber duck in a bathtub" regardless of whether they understand or not. HOWEVER, the very fact that you are explaining the design/problem to a 3rd party in detail will allow you to get a full insight into the project. Note that the 3rd person can be inanimate - it is the action of describing simply to someone/something else that makes the technique worthwhile. 10. Use the correct language for the job Need I say it - VFP!!! Dave Crozier -- No viru

Interesting VSJ item
Just received the latest VSJ newsletter which has this to say: Visual Studio developments Microsoft has been busy making its latest improvements to Visual Studio available in the past few weeks, including Visual Studio 2005 SP1 Update for Windows Vista. The only development products Microsoft is supporting under Vista are Visual FoxPro 9.0, VB 6.0 and VS 2005. VS.NET 2002 and 2003 are specifically not supported, and Microsoft recommends upgrading. The reason is that changes in Vista security and in networking support make it difficult to ensure that the older versions of VS will work correctly. -- Cheers Brian Abbott ___ Post Messages to: ProFox@leafe.com Subscription Maintenance: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profox OT-free version of this list: http://leafe.com/mailman/listinfo/profoxtech Searchable Archive: http://leafe.com/archives/search/profox This message: http://leafe.com/archives/byMID/profox/[EMAIL PROTECTED] ** All postings, unless explicitly stated otherwise, are the opinions of the author, and do not constitute legal or medical advice.
