This presentation provides an introduction to a powerful tool called
"regular expressions". Regular expressions are available in many types of
applications (e.g., editors, word processors and system tools), but their
power is most fully exposed when used via a programming language.

If it means anything, I disabled the UAC in W7, a very annoying feature. 
Maybe that is why it works in my computer.

That shouldn't matter as far as whether a message gets set to the 
tech-only list. Besides, I just checked the server logs and all 4 of your

Ed,

I know that you have pointed that out before, the original from email
address is not on the list then perhaps. So those are caught in an approve
place or something. The last email he sent was from a different address and
it came through to the tech list.

Ed,

The First 2 did not make it to the Tech list. I do not have them in my tech
list inbox, but do have them in my inbox that is the full list. Somehow it
dropped from being sent to the tech list. My filter is on the from address
to sort them.

Malcolm,

When the parent directory does not have read access.

\\network\noread\readwrite

I had a customer setup the users "Documents" folder to the network using
this scenario. The readwrite is the user directory, the noread folder did
not have rights to view the names of any files/folders with in it.

Creating a list of stress tests for unit tests involving files

file handling capabilities of our application.

Listed below are some file names designed to cause failures when
used with file open, copy, delete, and rename activites.

Can anyone think of additional scenarios (path names
or unusual file access) that we could test against? My tests will
initially be for the Windows platform (2000-Windows 7), but I
would welcome Linux and/or Mac specific failure conditions as
well.

Running as a Domain Administrator removes UAC on Vista, I believe it is the
same on Windows 7. Even Internet Explorer will run in the administrative
privilege with this user.

You found the Word.Application in the HKCR/Classes, it has a CLSID entry. Go
to this in HKCR/Classes/CLSID. I believe this is where you need to add that
Elevation key.

HKCR = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Word Automation in Windows 7 as Restricted User

This is a continuation of my "Word Automation: OLE exception error 5981 in 
Windows 7" thread.

Thanks to some great help from many of you, so far I have accomplished the 
following:

1. I established that my Word 97 automation system works fine in Windows XP 
once I make sure a required .bmp file is present in the path.

2. With most of the Windows 7 UAC security policies disabled or set to the 
loosest possible values, my Word 97 automation code now runs correctly, as 
originally written, in Windows 7, when using a Domain Administrator 
account. The program runs correctly in the IDE or as a compiled .exe file.

3. After learning that after setting the Word 97 "mode" back to Win 98, I 
could not longer do things like "Save As...", I reset it to run in Windows 
7 mode. That doesn't affect my automation code at all in my Domain 
Administrator account.

4. After changing the UAC policies I also find that I don't need to have 
Word set to "run as administrator" in order for the automation to work in 
my Domain Administrator account.

5. I do not need to run my application "as administrator" either in order 
for it to work when using my Domain Administrator account.

Now the problem is to get this program to work for a restricted user on 
Windows 7.

A Windows 7 restricted user cannot open the Visual Basic editor in Word 97 
no matter what combination of "compatibility modes" are in effect, not even 
if Word is set to "run as administrator".

If I run my .exe in the restricted Domain User account in Windows 7, I get 
the "Could not open macro storage" error on .documents.Add, again, no 
matter what combination of "compatibility modes" are in effect, and 
regardless of whether the .exe is run "as administrator".

Making the user a "Power User" has no effect on this issue.

There is no local security policy setting that lets me say "restricted 
users can have programs 'elevated' automatically without prompting", the 
way I can for adminstrators.

However, even with the "User Account Control: Behavior of the elevation 
prompt for standard users" item set to "Prompt for credentials", when the 
Word 97 automation code is encountered, there is no prompt. Instead, the 
object reference to the "Word.Application" object is successfully created, 
and then I get "could not open macro storage" on .documents.Add. What is 
notable about this was, before I disabled prompts and confirmations for 
administrators, I would get a different error, "operation requires 
elevation",  on the CREATEOBJECT("Word.Application") call when running in 
my Domain Administrator account.

Some digging in Microsoft publications on UAC brought up an article that 
suggested that if I could find a Class folder for the Word automation 
object in the registry, I could give it a new key called "Elevation" with a 
DWORD variable called "Enabled" set to 1. However, I couldn't find any 
appropriate Class in the registry for Word.

So. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can force Windows 7 to let a 
restricted user a VFP 9 SP 1 .exe that contains Word 97 automation code?

If you are running VFP in administrator privileges, and dragging for
Explorer, which doesn't, it could be a privilege problem.

If this makes creating a VPN super easy, what's to say this can't be 
created/used for your VFP apps to allow for easier/safer connections? 
If the backend of the database was MySQL (not VFP), it'd already be in a 
disconnected fashion like a traditional RDBMS, so I wouldn't expect the 
performance to be horrible, but rather at an acceptable level.

Your thoughts?

Great question!  I'd like to hear about Hamachi, too.  I've heard good 
things about its simple networking.  Some day-gig franchisees have setup 
VPNs for their multiple learning centers with Hamachi.  And at only 
$199/yr, that sounds decent, and even AWESOME if it allows me to create 
a VFP/MySQL solution that addresses the security concerns of accessing 
the MySQL database over the web.

Yeah, unfortunately in config.fpw, resource= can either be "on","off" or a 
file location. I already have the line

resource="off" in there.

The reason why my shutdown code has a SET RESOURCE TO line is because I use 
the old separate printing resource file dodge to force a print preview 
toolbar without a print button on it. If the print feature is used, we 
would go from SET RESOURCE OFF to having a resource file that would then 
need to be cleaned up on shutdown.

However, since restoring the SET RESOURCE value is only applicable when 
shutting down my app in the IDE, I just did this:

IF (NOT "6" $ OS()) OR _VFP.StartMode = 0
  IF FILE( (PreviouslyStoredPath\FileLocationForResourceTable))
   SET RESOURCE TO (TheOldResourceTo)

That fixed the problem.

I still have the issue of not being able to make my automation code work in 
Windows 7 when running as a restricted Domain User. I think I'll start a 
new thread on that and summarize everything so far.

the way we do it is to create separate printers in the control panel for
each tray.

then in your program you can SET PRINTER TO the correct printer and it will
print from the tray selected in the printer properties.

Guys,
I have just spent over an hour trying to sort out a weird problem relating
to OLEDRAGDROP with VFP and I am getting nowhere. The reason seems to be
that in development mode (VFP IDE) the OLEDRAGDROP doesn't work when
dragging from outside the VFP application. In the compiled application
everything seems to be OK.
 
Could someone verify that I am right in saying that using OLEDRAGDROP in
windows 7 with VFP doesn't work in VFP Development mode even though it does
in runtime mode.

Some example coding just to quickly use in a test is at:

I haven't access to an XP development box but would be really grateful of
someone could also confirm that the same program DOES works on XP in
development mode with VFP SP1 or SP2. When I developed all the DRAGDROP it
was on XP and I can't remember having a problem during development.

Either that, or I'm going nuts here and my Windows 7 installation or VFP is
hosed in some way. OR, there is s setting somewhere in the IDE that I
haven't found as of yet.

Not even close to a remedy.  All that does is attempt to hide the data
passed, not stopping access to the port.

As Ted stated never expose a DATA Server to the DMZ, this being SQL is
not diff then say MySQL, Oracle, 

VPN between client site off campus and corporate campus network is necessary.

If you mean an SSL certificate, you could well be right, although this
feature is being removed in some as yet unknown post-2008 R2 version,
apparently.

Printer output settings

Anyone know an easy way of sending reports to specific printer trays using 
code? Also need to be able to specify number of copies.
For example,  we need to produce delivery notes from tray 2 and invoices from 
tray 3 from same workstation & printer.
I know I could use the EXPR field in report.frx, but sometimes if the report is 
reprinted it may need to go to different printer & tray or only 1 copy.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES do you want to open the ports firewalling your
database from the Internet. (Forgive the shouting, but this is
important.) SQL Server is a database engine, not an Internet
appliance, and evildoers will exploit the direct connection to your
machine to cause a denial of service, theft of data, or other
exploits. It's been done before, and it will happen again. Please
consider establishing a virtual private network between your head
office and branch and then you can open ports, because you are sharing
within an encrypted tunnel.

You have to define the SERVER properly.

SERVER=RAFANUEVA\SQLEXPRESS  will fail if connecting through the
internet.  You will need to have the server in the DMZ, a dangerous
place for it, or behind the firewall where outside users will need a
VPN to gain access to that network.

Your client may have their network set up that everyone sees properly
through the network an AAA.BBB.CCC.123 can be pinged.

As a heads up I would change the PORT number for SQL Server
communications as well.

I have, and I looked at it on Ubuntu a couple of months ago. It seems
fairly  comprehensive, but very difficult to customise and somewhat
lacking in both standard reports and a good report design facility. Both
of those are very important.
