Hi Adam,

Surely you must know the issue is much, much bigger than a simple
preference of this degenerate 1 or 2 percent of the people. It involves
the redefining of a most sacred concept, which we have no right to do

On the other hand, I have no problem with "civil partnerships", as long

Check out TempFileCleaner as well. I find it goes farther than

I suspect that we're not likely to know the exact situation of your
application. I might try either renaming these files or moving them to
another directory (or onto a USB flash drive, or somewhere where the
program is not able to locate it), then run your program and test it. If
it crashes, it needs one or more of these files. If it doesn't, then you
can probably delete the files. (Though I would probably archive them,
perhaps just compress them just in case.)

Rackspace.com is what I've been using for nearly 9 months. Tried
Amazon...confusing. Rackspace's auto-backup software is easy to use and
while it isn't very configurable, it is reliable. The storage part of
Rackspace is called Junglebook or Jungledisk or something. I'm using
this for offsite backup of several clients and my own personal data as
well. I tried all the NAS and Linux server solutions, which work fine,
but they don't move the data out of harm's way in the case of theft or
fire or other disaster. And the price is hard to beat for the peace of
mind it provides.

Highly recommended.

I'm pretty sure, if I'm remembering my C++ correctly, that you can directly
access a field from outside a class as long as you declare it public in
that language also.

In VFP you can use an _assign method on a class property to implement
read-only or validation. You can, of course, also make the the property
"protected" or "hidden" and write get/set methods on the class to govern
access if you want. VFP's implementation of "hidden" is annoying in certain
contexts, though.

You will sometimes see in programming literature the assertion that get/set
methods should be used with every property to ensure that properties are
used only as intended by the designer. The people who make these assertions
tend to forget that not every project involves creating classes that will
be used in contexts not controlled by the designer. In most cases in
single-developer projects, get/set methods are overkill.

>When databinding you must use properties.

That would seem to be somewhat annoying.

What is the cost for accessing data? Storage is usually dirt cheap.
Accessing it is where the $$ is made.

Backups of what? They handle that and they have the fail over if one

Yes, if you compress files, when you go to use them they will decompress
on the fly.

Compression does very little good on graphics files. For text files
(including DBF's) you can generally save more than half, but binary
files (.exe and graphics) you save very little if any.

> Any thoughts???

Yes. Forget about compression, and attack the problem on two fronts:
   First, find stuff on C: to clear out or move to another partition.
Get a tool like TreeSize (free) to see which directories are the
biggest. \User\\Appdata\Roaming is often a big hog. Also,
move the Swapfile to another partion or (better) to another drive.
In your Environment, re-define %temp% to a different drive/partition.
In your graphics editor, check Options and see where they put temp
files. It's probably in C:\Users\somewhere. Move it.

Second, go to Disk Management and expand the C: partition. The
Windows7 tools are quite adequate for this. Oh yes, do this right after
you have installed a bigger drive!

Kurt,

My experience has always been bad. My recommendation is Do NOT do it.

Disable the hibernation mode to reclaim some space, if you haven't already.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/920730

Move the SWAP file to a different partition. (The hibernation file must
exist on the boot drive)
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307886

Move your data files (documents and other files) to a different partition.

It's interesting how the using statment works. The c# compiler actualy
translates this into a try...catch.

RingEDIEntities db;
try
{
   db = new RingEDIEntities();
}
catch
{
}
finally
{
   db.Dispose()
}

lock() works in a similar way. This translates also to a try..catch

lock(myObject)
{
   // Thread sensitive code
}

For me, I've been writing c/c++ code for 20 years, so I love c# syntax :-)

Just in case you get a wild hair and decide to start playing with the
partitions, MAKE A DISK IMAGE OF EACH PARTITION FIRST.

If it's the boot partition, is it also just the OS files on there or
are you also storing data and programs? Try and move that stuff to a
partition w/ more room.

I'd avoid the compression bit like the plague

[NF] HD Space Issues...

2012-05-09 Thread Kurt Wendt
Hey there folks - looking to reach out to the techies here...

This machine I have at home - where I do a lot of my main 3D computer
graphics work - I am running WinXP Pro-64. On one of the drives
(although it may be more specific to say it's a partition on there - it
was a While ago when I first built the workstation) is running low on
space - and it's the Boot partition

I went into Properties & then Disk Tools - to try and get some space
back. Under the Disk Cleanup - its gives an option to "Compress Old
Files" - and its showing a pretty big number. I'm assuming that its old
files that it knows I have not Touched in quite a while. Am I assuming
correctly? And, if it compresses them - does that mean if I try to use
the files - it will decompress them on the Fly?

Also - in the Properties window - there is another check box to
"Compress drive to save disk space". Should I try using that???

In the past - I never ran EITHER of these options. I assumed that when I
do - it compresses files - then decompresses them on the fly when one
tries to access the files. However, I always try to operate that PC at
top speed - since I am doing graphics work on it - and graphics
processing always takes a lot of horsepower. As such - I never trusted
using EITHER of those options.

But, now I want to take a shot at maybe using ONE or Both of those
options - if they actually work Well to save disk space WITHOUT taking a
Big Hit in processing/disk access speeds!

Any thoughts???

Thanks,

 -K-

Kind of :)

A class is a construct that enables you to create your own custom
types by grouping together variables of other types, methods and
events. So everything is based off the class System.

That is why you have the using statements in the top of your code.

So from my class I can define a structure for data, or a set of
methods to do work. yes they could all be in the same class.

You could have a class Customer with methods for .Add .Update, .New etc.

Customer cust =  getCustomer(custID)

public static Customer getCustomer(Int32 ID)
{
  // fill customer data object from ID
using (RingEDIEntities db = new RingEDIEntities())<< Entity Framework here
{
var myCust = (from c in db.Customers
   where c.id == ID
select  c
   ).First();
return myCust;
}

}

This does all of the data access to my SQL Server box for me, gets the
row I want and shoots it back to you.

Granted you need a try catch or an if else in case you get a bad ID
inbound here  :)

Well, they are private, but only because I made a mistake: :-)

public class myclass
{
   public string Field1;
   public bool Field2;
}

Fields are simpler than properties (get; set), and you have less control.
For example, a property can be read-only, or throw an exception on an
invalid value.

When databinding you must use properties.

I jammed out a quick test. Yes you can add the class MyClass, you
just have to set the fields to PUBLIC or they will not be exposed
outside of this class.

namespace quickTest
{
public class Test
{
public void mast()
{
MyClass mc = new MyClass();
mc.Field1  = "fdsfs";
}
}
}

public class MyClass
{
public string Field1;
public bool Field2;
}

}

Yes. When will people realize that many of the hooded people wandering

James,
Download a program called Manycam, it is free and it effectively allows you to
multistream a physical webcam or emulate one with pictures, videos or even your
live desktop etc. You can test out the program then with pictures. The nice
thing about it is that you can zoom in/out with manycam and also add effects
and titling. I'll leave it up to you to find out how to find out the way of
removing the "Manycam" title logo from the screen. It's easy once you find it..
lol.

Just holler if you have any problems.

No, you're not. This works fine:

public class myclass

   string Field1;
   bool Field2;
}

However, these are fields, rather than properties.

But that's exactly the sort of inelegance I mean. I'll wager that 99.9%
of code created does nothing special with these getter/setter methods; they
simply get/set the value unchanged. So in order to handle the few cases where
code is needed, you are stuck with all this useless baggage.

Contrast that with Python, where you have simple attributes with no
special code needed to get/set.

class Foo(object):
def __init__(self):
self.bar = ""

f = Foo()
f.bar = "ed"
print f.bar
-> 'ed'

Now let's say that you actually need to make 'bar' into a property with
getter/setter methods. No problem; just change the class:

class Foo(object):
def __init__(self):
self._bar = ""
def _getBar(self):
return self._bar
def _setBar(self, val):
self._bar = val.upper()
bar = property(_getBar, _setBar)

f = Foo()
f.bar = "ed"
print f.bar
-> 'ED'

The point being that for the vast majority of object attributes, no
such manipulation is needed, so the code is simple. When more complex behavior
is needed, then and *only* then do you need to write more complex code.

I recently saw (both in our stuff here and in Ken Getz' video for this
training) that they had all these get/set lines and I wondered why?
(And I think Stephen posted such too, iirc) I vaguely recall learning
that VB6 classes had to have _Get and _Set methods to their properties.
  Guess that continues the tradition.

Kevin - I just looked at that link you gave us. The Zebra printers you
referred to - they have these big ones - expensive and Overkill for your
needs. But, they also have small ones - like that Brother one in the
link - which I used at a previous job - and it was a nice one. I just
don't know the model # for it.

Also, as others have suggested - you can also just print to a Laser Jet
printer. We've done that A LOT for many of our clients at the co. where
I am work at by day!

I have a need to print labels from a VFP application, from about 10

I was looking at the Brother BL-580N http://amzn.to/IVESpE I have had

good results with Brother printers, and with this label printer being
networkable, it is very appealing for the price.

Opinions?  Alternatives?

You could do that, or you can print a label with the postage.  I think your way
is probably better for what they do.    I have a program for another client
that copies the address to a temporary database 10 times, then prints a sheet
of ten labels, and as many copies as you want from the printer dialogue.     If
these are regular clients, then your way is best, if it's a one-time client,
then a thermal label printer would be best.

Hello Michael,

These labels will be mailing labels.  They have been hand writing them
to mail documents to these clients.  The president hates that it doesn't
portray a professional image.  They figure they'll print 1-3 copies of
the labels, and stick the extras in the folder for future use; print
more when required.

I was hoping to keep it simple for them with a SET PRINTER TO NAME
{label printer name} and then print the labels and return to the default
printer with a SET PRINTER DO DEFAULT when done.

Kevin,

Based on what was said on the list, I decided to just recommend using laser
labels in their laser machine and feed them by hand.   It has worked out very
well.   Of course our application is postal and FEDEX labels, which are two to
a sheet.    All they have to do is feed it in manually, print, then turn the
sheet around and  feed the second label in.  Since the shipping area is where
they print the labels, there is no problem hand-feeding the labels

Actually, in my haste the code I wrote would have created class
attributes; i.e., shared by all instances of a class. Since they are probably
supposed to be different for each instance, the correct code should be:

Well in C# 3.0 you reduce this:

public class Person
{
   string _FirstName;
   string _LastName;

   public string FirstName
   {
get { return _FirstName; }
set { _FirstName = value; }
   }

   public string LastName
   {
get { return _LastName; }
set { _LastName = value; }
   }
}

to the following, which is a lot neater:

public class Person
{
   public string FirstName  { get; set; }
   public string LastName  { get; set; }
}

Can't get much briefer that that can you.

I'd be willing to bet that most C# developers don't bother with getters

I haven't done it, but I think it should be pretty easy to do.

This is the first company I Googled that provides ActiveX object for VFP, there
must be others.

Has anyone tried to provide a live video stream inside a visual foxpro
application?

We'd like to provide a live video stream of each horse as it is being
auctioned, and wanted to have the stream appear inside a "container" on a
vfp form which would include additional textboxes on the form containing
pertinent data for the horse being auctioned.

Research indicates there might be an active x control to put on the form to
handle the video.  I found a couple references to ActiveX controls, but was
hoping someone has already had some experience with this subject.

Terseness isn't a virtue; if it were, then we'd all be writing in Perl.

It's the plethora of useless repetition, such as having to declare the
"get/set" for every member. The fact that most developers don't actually write
all that, but instead rely on a tool to generate it, shows that the language
itself is not elegant. It also creates a reliance on the tool in order to code
efficiently. Once you have been able to write powerful code with just a text
editor, you find yourself with an aversion to tool dependency. It's like being
able to run on your own, and then having to rely on a wheelchair to get around.
