VFP Code Conversion Workbench

2024-09-24 Thread Man-wai Chang
I was guided to a VFP video in Youtube about Installshield...

Visual FoxPro for 2024: Installing on a New Developer Computer - YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoZZuw3ggM8

and then I saw this:

Convert Visual FoxPro to C# in 15 Seconds With VFP Code Conversion
Workbench - YouTube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7sgxd9YbF0

Does this Workbench really work? Could he C# codes be compiled and
linked into executable right after conversion? ;)

Re: FoxPro 2.6 for Windows App

Foxpro for WIndows is a 16-bit program, if I remember correctly.
64-bit Windows have dropped support for 16-bit apps. That's why your
client is using 32-bit Windows to run that old 16-bit program.

I think you could use 64-bit virtual machines to run old 16-bit
programs. There are also tools like DOSBox.

You have to experiment with them to really find out how far you could go.

Did you move the location of both Desktop and Download to the same folder.
First, fix their locations by right-click their Properties, then move the files!

Re: Odd Error Message

2019-06-27 Thread Man-wai Chang
You better double-check the error handler! It should not have ignored
the write error to that TEMP folder.

To verify whether a folder was writable, you could test write then
delete a file in that folder and look for errors. You might need to
temporarily use ON ERROR to trap file write errors before restoring
the original error handler. I have done this kind of things many
times.

But then, why would someone lock down temporary folders? They are
supposed to be TEMPORARY! But then, if the limit was on folder size,
your code might still failed. So, your program still had to be fixed
to detect that. A virus scanner could also produce the same error.

Happy hunting anyway! :)

Very interesting

"mod Harbour is an extension module for Apache that provides full
support to execute PRGs and HRBs files from the web.

If you are a Windows developer, you can build the web from your Windows
10 and then simply run your PRGs on Edge or Chrome powered by Apache on
the Windows 10 bash using the mod Harbour extension. When everything is
ready, simply take your PRGs to your dedicated Linux web server where
you can install the mod Harbour for Apache."

SET FILTER can use variables. Changing the values of the variables

These wikis might help?
http://fox.wikis.com/wc.dll?Fox~DisplayFindResults

I barely remember that there were tricks in using grid:

1. this.recordsource=this.recordsource

2. select (this.recordsource)
go recno()
this.refresh()

I still think there were some codes in your popup screen that moved
the record pointer of the grid's recordsource. You could re-open the
grid's data source using aliases without moving the record pointer in
the grid.

* something like these:
select 0
use (grid.recordsource) again noupdate alias haha
* do your stuffs
use in haha

If it's still the good, old FTP protocol, you don't need a new FTP client.

Would older versions of FileZilla work better? And Window$ 10 still
have the very old console-mode ftp client.

When you go Cloud, You have to handle the worst-case scenario when a
network partition happens. And what should you do when the network
resumes operation after a network partition? How do you sync data
between local apps and the cloud apps? It's way too complicated, which
translates into extra programming, debugging and testing!

A terminal server is always a better solution, in my limited opinion.

If your desktop used wired LAN, set a static IP and see if it could

Re: Windows 10 Home edition (was Re: Listbox auto-magically filters unwanted characters)

2017-12-07 Thread Man-wai Chang
If you are only using US English in language settings, nothing would go bad. :)

But I noticed that some differences regarding Chinese Hong Kong
Language Pack between Home and Professional. It seemed that Win 10
Home didn't install Hong Kong's Supplementary Character Set. I didn't
noticed the same problem with my old Win 10 Professional install.

Maybe I did something wrong, needed a few more Win 10 clean installs
to verify. I needed to test more carefully.

Listbox auto-magically filters unwanted characters

2017-12-05 Thread Man-wai Chang
I found that in WIndows 10 Home Premium, the system locale Big5 might
cause VFP's listbox not to display a row of data. When the locale was
English, all records were displayed without losing one.

Is it an expected behavior?

For Rushmore optimization, one index per field. Then use SQL to query
or sort. Do NOT build compound indexes unless you have special needs.

I would be more amazed if this programming genius could build Visual

work naturally. Meow >@.@<

It happened to Clipper the xBase compiler, called the Harbor Project.
But VFP is a lot more complicated and came with a Rushmore database
engine. :)

"The Lindy effect says that what’s been around the longest is likely
to remain around the longest. It applies to creative artifacts, not
living things. A puppy is likely to live longer than an elderly dog,
but a book that has been in press for a century is likely to be in
