I did, old-timer. Albeit a Commodore 64.

 Young punk.

One of the first things that my first computer teacher (in high
school) said was that computers were so expensive, no one person
could hope to own one. That was a bit of hyperbole even then, but
pretty close for the typical person. I used to spend my allowance
money on computer time at UBC to use their mainframe. That was in
the mid-'70s. (I still remember their announcement about them
doubling the memory on their mainframe from four to eight *megabytes*.)

Sincerely,

Gene Wirchenko

RE: [NF] New shiny thing...

2015-06-18 Thread Kurt Wendt
Ha! I hear ya Stephen!

I didn't get my hands on a computer until 17 - when my high school offered the
very 1st course ever - mainly on an Apple II - a course in BASIC. I'm surely
jealous of the kids today - who have Easy access to computers - and can start
computing at a Super Young age.

I actually taught my son Binary & Hex numbers, and doing math in those number
systems - back when he was about 7 or 8. And, I think it was about a year ago I
was trying to show him how to program in Basic - as I found a real Simple type
of Basic I could install on my laptop. Maybe it was called Simple BASIC - I
forget. It's still on the laptop - but, I just can't play with it now at work.
I wish I could have gotten my son more interested in programming - and at least
dabbling in it. Although - he's already taken SEVERAL Classes - in these summer
ID Tech camps - I believe in like JavaScript - I think. And, some other classes
on weekends - I think at a local college - classes for gifted kids - and I
think he may have been doing some Java, some HTML and maybe a little bit of CSS
- or something like that. And, that was about a year ago or so. FYI - he will
be turning 14 this coming July 11th.

And - I just saw the video - at least the beginning. The woman interviewer sure
is kinda hot! But, the Kid - Dang - smart young kid - can believe he is
actually a "Professional" Developer already at the age of 15 - and is juggling
MULTIPLE Projects! Jeepers - does the kid NOT attend school??? I didn't finish
watching the video - but, I will - and I may have already answered my own
question once I watch the rest...
