 It's free.

Here's a blog post which does a pretty good job of explaining where
LocalDB fits in with respect to Express and Compact editions:

Whole lot of possible incorrect statements going on in this thread.

Are you making schema changes in the db on your system and then updating
the client?

Do they have SS2008-R2 in which version?

If you are not making a restore of their system after you tweak it on your
own you can use 2008, 12, 14 to do anything you want on your end. The
newer may have a tough time restoring backwards DEPENDING on VERSION,
Enterprise-Data Center-etc.

From Amazon you can get Developer for 50-80 USD and that is a steal
compared to buying Enterprise for possibly as low as 10,000. The developer
version does everything Enterprise does but not for end users. We run our
prod server on Enterprise and our test server on Developer. I will not go
into how much enterprise costs because I don't know what we finally agreed
to with M$. BABS has 256 gig of ram and 64 cores.

Now WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO ACCOMPLISH?
Can we get a list of major tasks that need to be done? If so you can get
guidance in best processes to follow.

Re: [NF] SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer Version

2015-04-01 Thread Stephen Russell
You can download the free Express edition of 2012 or 2014 and restore the
backup(s) easily.

Not sure where on the page for download but it will have a list of other
files to download and one of them will be Manager, another will be
Reporting services, Analytically Services, etc. Or you can download
everything for free and have that 10 gig limit to a DB.

Because you are SA on your box you should have no trouble with ability to
gain access into this db.

Once you have the DB restored you can rt click on the db name and Export
Data is towards the bottom. I have no idea if the VFP data driver will
work here so I would use excel output or access to catch any table you want
to throw at it. Works real fast and all you have to do is define the file
name or table name depending on the container you choose.

Hope this helps.

Database is large.

Thanks and you better not go anywhere!

If the database isn't huge, you could probably get by with SQL Server Express:

$49 seems like a reasonable deal.

I would expect a later db to read a dump from an earlier one, but
don't expect you can dump this into an earlier edition. I have done
it, by generating SQL Scripts, targeting early versions, but there's
no guarantee that will work.

SSMS = SQL Server Management Studio. This is actually the 2008 R2 version I
just found.

And then there's the 2014 download but it's not 100% clear to me if this is
time limited in any way since the page refers to eval.

A couple of days ago I stumbled over this:
   https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh510202.aspx

It's a new form of SQL Server Express called LocalDB, and is supposed to
reduce required complexity and overhead for software developers/testers. Looks
good but I haven't investigated further.
It's free.
