2020-09-16 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

You all know that tomorrow, July 20th, is the 50th anniversary of the
Apollo 11 moon landing. To celebrate, PSAS is throwing a "Landing Party"
in the Engineering Building, rooms 102 and 103 at 7:00 pm. There will be
food (pizza!) and activities (!), as well as the Apollo 11 movie which
is a pretty amazing movie.

Feel free to bring a guest or two and any fun space-themed food/items
you may have.

Hope to see you there!

Andrew (and Catie, who has masterminded this event!)

[PSAS] SolidWorks CAD monkey wanted for outside project this week

2019-03-25 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

If you have some SolidWorks skillz, and have a day or two free this
week, an old PSAS member is wanting someone to create a solid model of a
weird twisty wing for a drone, based on a dozen or so sections of the
wing that he already has. Once you get the solid model done, he'll need
a STEP export so he can get it machined out of foam.

He's apparently willing to pay cold hard cash! Bug me if you're interested.

[PSAS] Help PSAS this "Day of Giving" Tuesday!

2018-11-23 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

This Tuesday November 27th is "Giving Tuesday" and PSAS is part of the
PSU Foundation's "Day of Giving" campaign. Our campaign page is now
live, and they're encouraging us to start internally fundraising now,
building up to a big external emphasis on Tuesday.

We've chosen a $10,000 target, which is a lot of money but what we're
going to need to LV3.1, our capstones, and OreSat.

Here's the amazing news: we're *already* half way there, thanks to the
amazing Josh Triplett. Josh has specifically given us the mission to
"seriously kick ass this year"; with his help, I think we're going to!

But! We need your help to get the other half!

This Thanksgiving weekend, please start hitting up friends and family to
donate to our Day of Giving fund page. Facebook it to your peeps, ask
them for a bit of cash to help you and PSAS along:

http://c-fund.us/id4

.. and Amber will have more information for us this weekend about what
other things you can do. But for now, reach our to your local people!

[PSAS] Congratulations to ALL FOUR PSAS OSGC UTEAP teams!

2018-11-19 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone,

Four different teams submitted proposals to the Oregon Space Grant
Consortium (OSGC) Undergraduate Team Experience Award Program (UTEAP).
This is a state-wide program that gives money to student teams for work
on competitions and other student-led projects.

ALL FOUR TEAMS WERE ACCEPTED! All in all, that brings in over $28,000 to
PSAS projects. This is... outstanding.

The teams were:

Electromechanical Recovery System (ERS)
Lead: Marie House
PI: Dr. Lemmy Meekisho
Team: Grady Goodenough, Annaliese Hernandez, Alan Hurley, Nathaniel
Stickrod, Gabriel Watson, Melissa McEntire

Flight Ready Electric Feed System
Lead: Julio Garcia
PI: Dr. Mark Weislogel
Team: Shayli Elrod, Timothy Finn, Amber Stroh, Phil Wahl

Integration and Testing of a Liquid Propellant Engine
Lead: Sam Hastings Hauss
PI: Dr. Mark Weislogel
Team: Seleste Astronomo, Sam Hastings Hauss, MacKenzie Kesler, Petr
Mazhnikov, Teresa Nguyen, Erik Potenza, Eric Thomas

OreSat Thermal Analysis: The thermal analysis of a 2U CubeSat
Lead: Parker Southwick
PI: Dr. Gerald Recktenwald
Team: Tyler Benson, Victor Delcea, Kathleen Joslyn, Jennifer Jordan,
Katherine Popchock, Thomas Otero

And finally, a special congratulations to Risto for helping herd ALL of
the UTEAP space cats to get their proposals written, organized,
budgeted, and through the not-so-small bureaucratic hurdles of a
sponsored project.

Congratulations everyone!

[PSAS] Trying out a new online video meeting service tonight - meet.jit.si/psas

2018-10-30 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

Our regular Google Hangouts link hasn't been working recently, and we
still occasionally bump into Hangout's 10 person limit. Tonight, we're
trying out open source and free video conferencing from jitsi.org.

The URL for tonight's meeting is: https://meet.jit.si/psas

It should work in any modern browser with no plug ins required and no login.

Note that unlike hangouts, it may start up with camera and sound on,
which is a bit obnoxious. We'll be able to fix that later if we decide
to stick with Jitsi.

See you all tonight,

[PSAS] NASA lecture here on human exploration of deep space, Monday 10/29

2018-10-14 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

Dr. Weislogel is bringing a NASA lecturer in to PSU in a few weeks.
Poster attached, and here's the info:

Dr. Paul McConnaughey from NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center will
present "The Future of Deep Space Human Exploration" on Monday, October
29th from 1:30pm - 3:00pm at PSU's Karl Miller Center (KMC) room 180.

Why explore deep space? And what technologies will it take to get there?
Dr. Paul McConnaughey, associate director, technical, at NASA’s Marshall
Space Flight Center will discuss the importance of engineering advanced
technologies to journey to deep space – to cislunar, the Moon, Mars and
beyond. From the evolvable heavy-lift capability of the Space Launch
System to cutting edge lander propulsion technology, the journey to deep
space will require innovation and the next generation STEM workforce to
be successful.

[PSAS] PSAS and the Electronics Prototyping Lab (EPL)

2018-09-06 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

We talked about this on Tuesday, but I wanted everyone to have this in
writing:

As most of you know, the rocket room adjoins the Electronics Prototyping
Lab (EPL). The EPL is a rapid prototyping lab run by the PSU ECE
department. It is in no way associated with PSAS. The EPL is run by
trained and vetted student "managers". Only official student managers
can have the EPL open, and allow others into the lab.

Not surprisingly, many PSAS folk are also EPL managers, because we're
just that kind of people. But there's no official link.

Given that background, there are some EXTREMELY IMPORTANT RULES that may
NOT be broken. They are:

1. NO ONE may be in the EPL without an EPL manager present. Ever.

PSAS folk may NOT be in the EPL unless a manager is present. We don't
have "special access", and no manager may give us "special access". This
is important because of the door between the two rooms: it may only be
open if there's an EPL manager in the EPL or in the PSAS room. If
there's not, CLOSE THE DOOR.

2. No tools from the EPL may leave the EPL.

No tools from the EPL may ever leave the EPL. This includes NOT going
into the PSAS room. If you need an EPL tool, bring your work into the EPL.

Conversely, if you ever bring PSAS tools into the EPL, be SURE to bring
them back. Else they'll get sucked into the EPL and never be found again.

3. Follow all EPL rules, even better than everyone else.

We don't have special dispensation because, admittedly, we're cool. So
don't do things like jump 3D printer queues, or leave a mess. Instead,
be excellent users of the lab and leave the lab better than when you
found. Always clean up your area, and even around you.

4. Become an EPL manager!

If you're a current student, and you get trained on all the EPL
equipment, and you can volunteer hours, you can be an EPL manager too. I
encourage everyone to do this, even non-ECE majors! Talk to me, or a
manager, if you want more info.

Finally: if you have any questions, please feel free to ask me or any
EPL manager. Clarity is important here.

Thanks everyone!

[PSAS] Report from Launch 13

2018-05-20 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone,

Here's the quick summary on Launch 13. More details, including pictures
and movies, on Tuesday evening.

-

Since Kenny's original rocket truck was still in the shop, we got a
giant loaner truck from the repair shop. We loaded up Friday morning,
and reached the Oregon Rocketry site by about 5:00pm. The only
excitement was Eric's car breaking down in Madras, but Bert picked him
up on the way in. We setup camp, put up the launch tower, and settled in
for a long night of rocket building.

Everything went fairly well that evening, and we wrapped up rocket
building around 2am with the rocket mostly assembled. Putting together
the ballast plates took a lot longer than expected, but otherwise there
were no surprises.

Sunday morning the rocket was prepped and ready for flight by 11am,
which was a new record for us. But of course, something always gets in
the way of flight in the morning. First it was Range Safety Officer
(RSO) checks, then it was waiting for OSU to launch their ballistic dart
rocket up on the hill, then it was fixing the launch lugs.. etc. We were
finally vertical on the launch tower by 2pm. Then it was another
excruciating hour as we dealt with the umbilical cable, the TeleMetrum's
GPS lock, and coordinating everyone to move 200 ft back from the flight
line because of the safety considerations for an O motor.

Finally, sometime after 3pm we finally launched! The motor took FOREVER
to light, but finally caught, and then the off the rails was just
gorgeous. Straight as an arrow; everything looked great.

Then, around 2 km up, the airframe experienced what is euphemistically
called a "rapid unscheduled disassembly". The rocket tore apart and
broken into a dozen or more pieces. After the bits were mostly out of
the sky, we sent out the recovery teams, and amazingly (good job
recovery teams!) recovered *most* of the rocket, including nosecone,
parachutes, camera rings, avionics module, a fin and bracket, fin can,
and motor.

After some discussion in the field, we hypothesize that one or more fins
delaminated from the fin can, which caused the rocket to tumble and then
break apart. We'll do more "root cause analysis" on Tuesday night, after
trying to extract data and video from the bits of the rocket that we
recovered.

LV3 was so many new technologies rolled into one vehicle that there were
gobs of things that could go wrong. And one did. That's annoying, and
frustrating, but that's why we do this is. It's rocket science, so
things go wrong when you push performance margins as closely as we do.

So congratulations to everyone for a successful test of our new rocket
technology! And a strong congrats and good work to Joe, Adam, and
Yohannes and the rest of the airframe team - nice work, let's refactor,
and try again!

Finally, special thanks to Kenny for his hard work and the rocket truck,
to William for making the O3400 a reality, to Dave for making a day trip
despite his insane schedule, and to Oregon Rocketry for making the
launch possible.

Next up: refactor our composite technologies, build us a new rocket, try
again! LV3.2 will be faster and easier to build, and moves us beyond
what we've already learned from Launch 13.

Please join us Tuesday night if you can!

[PSAS] Launch 13.1 update

2018-05-16 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

Everything on our side is a solid go for this weekend: motor and casing
are in, launch lug rings are in, we're all set.

The only problem is weather: Sunday continues to look bad, and even has
gotten worse since last nice. Realistically, if the forecast is
accurate, we'd have to launch Saturday afternoon.

At the moment, this looks possible: we'd pack the truck Friday morning,
leave by Friday late morning, arrive Friday afternoon and set up camp
and launch tower, then launch Saturday late morning / early afternoon.
Essentially our standard practice, just Fri/Sat, not Sat/Sun.

So, please keep your Friday morning clear if possible!

More news tomorrow evening.

[PSAS] T-5 days 15 hours 25 minutes until LAUNCH 13(.2)

2018-05-14 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

So far, we're all systems go for Launch 13 this coming weekend. We're
doing the final go/no go call tomorrow (Tuesday) evening at the meeting.

If you're going to the launch this coming weekend, please be at tomorrow
evening's meeting (or let me know that you can't make it ASAP).

Also, exciting news - The vicious rumors are confirmed, we'll be flying
an O3400 motor to over 8 km (26,000 ft)!! That's a new record for PSAS.

Tuesday evening we'll have the final timeline, but Sunday morning
10:00am launch is still the plan.

[PSAS] June Fire Marshall inspection in the rocket room

2018-05-03 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

In June, the EB and thus the rocket room will get a fire inspections.
Violations are big deal for PSU, so we want exactly non in the PSAS
space. Everyone please check your section of the rocket room, and fix as
necessary. If you need new power strips, or whatnot, please let me know
ASAP and I'll order one for you.

From Don Mueller:

---

- Remove all extension cords (plugged in or not) Power strips with an
inline breaker are acceptable.

- Eliminate daisy chaining. DO NOT plug a power strip into another power
strip or an extension cord into a power strip or vice-versa.

- Power strips can come from above BUT the multi plug end must sit
solidly on a surface it can not be hanging freely.

- Eliminate trip hazards. Power strips should not be strung along the
floor crossing an egress path with out some cover or wire mold.

- Provide unobstructed access to disconnects on the wall that are in
use. You need 30" wide by 42" deep clear access. Disconnects that are
tagged and locked do NOT need this clearance.

- Remove all clutter that obstructs egress to exits. Clean up and have
removed all garbage or empty unused boxes and containers.  Obstructed
egress is a code violation.  This goes for labs, offices, classrooms,
and any space where people live or work.

- Remove or file away excessive piles of paper or books in offices,
labs, or classrooms. Too much paper lying around constitutes a
combustion load and will get cited.  This is a bit subjective so a clean
and orderly space with papers filed in drawers and cabinets will
probably be OK but the same space with piles of papers on all surfaces
including the floor will get cited.

- Remove and down stack any items stacked or stored with in 18" of
ceiling or sprinkler heads.

- Properly store in properly labeled containers and cabinets ALL
combustible chemicals. This includes household cleaners and solvents you
might not think of , so READ the LABELS.

- Remove or seal in proper container all oily or soiled rags and paper
towels.

---

Thanks everyone. Let's get this cleaned up in the next couple of weeks.

[PSAS] Need a truck tomorrow morning for the new PSAS "Rocket Wall"

2018-04-26 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi!

Evan has built us a rocket wall! It's like a katana holder, except with
rockets :) It's going to be amazing.

Tomorrow morning at 10:00am we'd like to pick up the wall from Evan's
house in N Portland and bring it to PSU. Do you have a large truck or
van that could easily and safely fit 3 pieces of the wall, which are
about 4 x 7 x 0.5 ft each, and have tomorrow morning from 9:30am -
10:30am free?

Let me know as soon as you can!

[PSAS] Post traumatic lug-breaking disorder

2018-04-23 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone,

Certain people are beating themselves up about the launch lug breaking
off. Stop that. Seriously. This was no ones fault. We'll root cause this
next Tuesday, because that's always the Right Thing To Do, but please
consider this:

- We don't have a formal SOP for loading the rocket. So it's not like we
didn't follow an SOP and broke the launch lug. This is no one particular
person's fault.

- None of us knew that loading the rocket would generate enough force to
break the launch lug off. This was extremely unexpected. It possibly
shouldn't have broken off, even with the misalignment, or we should have
a system that behaves better with misalignment.

In all cases: please stop beating yourselves up about this. It happened,
we scrubbed, we're launching next month. This is not a big deal. And in
the long run this is a big win because we can now make fun of "Joe's
lugs coming off" for the rest of eternity.

I, personally, have scrubbed plenty of launches with actual mistakes. It
happens. Rockets are complicated beasts. We wouldn't be working on them
if it was easy (!)

Andrew

PS. Also, if you're feeling this way, please talk to me before I find
out from someone else and come hunt you down.

[PSAS] Launch 13 update

2018-04-20 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone! We're really go for this weekend! Hooray!

## Saturday plans

We're meeting in the rocket room at 8:00am tomorrow to pack the rocket
up and get ready for loading Kenny's truck RIGHT AT 9:00am. Our goal is
to be on the road EARLY, like 10:00am. That's an hour EARLIER than planned.

If you have stuff you want to put in Kenny's truck be at PSU NO LATER
than 9:15am.

## Update from today

It was a busy day of last minute organization and testing! Here's the
quick update:

- Dave received built up our N1975 motor!

- Kenny finished up installing a 5.8 GHz transmitter in the avionics
module. Now not only will we get TeleMetrum GPS coordinates and data,
we'll get a live image from flight!

- I fixed all of the cameras that were burnt to a crisp next week, so
the 9-camera "Argus" 360 degree video module is ready.

- Marie, Lucas, and crew tested the eNSR one more time after Calvin
buttoned it up for flight.

See you all tomorrow!

[PSAS] Integration day is a "go"! T-13 days until Launch 13.

2018-04-09 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone,

Integration day went really well today, despite being pretty wet. We
loaded everything in Kenny's truck, drove out to Dave's, setup the
launch tower and launch tower computer, ran them through a simulated
launch, and put LV3 together. Then we packed it all back up and took it
back to PSU. Whew!

Thanks to Dave for hosting us at his house and teaching the "new kids"
about the launch tower. Thanks to Kenny and his giant truck for hauling
everything from PSU to Dave's, and for being the best Ex-Police Bomb
Squad Now PSAS Launch Control Truck ever (yes, it is, and yes, it's
awesome).

There's lots to be done over the next two weeks, including polishing up
systems, finishing our checklists, and monitoring weather on the 22nd
closely.

At this point, we're "go" for launch, so only weather, or some
unforeseen catastrophe, will scrub the launch.

We'll keep you updated!

[PSAS] Plans for integration day tomorrow!

2018-04-07 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

Integration day tomorrow, Sunday April 8th! It's going to be a little
bit wet, so bring rain gear.

-
Here's the schedule:

- Get to the rocket room at 9:00am if you can. We're going to go over
checklists, and prep things for our test today.

- Slackers should arrive at the rocket room at 10:00am.

- Starting at 10:00am, we're going to start hauling things out to Keny's
truck.

- We're going to leave at 10:45am for Dave's house. If you can't meet us
before 10:45am at PSU, just go straight to Dave's. PLEASE don't arrive
at Dave's house before 11:00am. :) If you need Dave's address, it's in
the meeting notes from Tuesday eve. If you can't get access to that,
please email or text me.

- Starting at 11:00am, we're going to set up the launch tower, the
launch tower computer, LV3, tables, chairs, Flight Director's equipment,
etc.

- Hopefully by early afternoon we'll load LV3 on the rail, and do some
launch simulations.

- We'll break down around 4pm, be out of Dave's hair by 5pm, and
hopefully have everything back in the rocket room by 6pm.

Long day, but by the end we'll have a completely update checklist and
know that we're (almost) ready for launch!

See you then,

Andrew

[PSAS] Launch 13 moved to April 22nd!

2018-03-21 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

We decided this weekend to push back Launch 13 by two weeks to April
22nd, 2018. We've done this for many reasons:

- We're not quite ready for 4/8. We could be ready by a really narrow
margin, but we'd rather be slower and cautious for this first flight of
LV3. This gives us an extra two weeks for testing, which is exactly what
we need.

- That weekend is Oregon Rocketry's "AP Showers" [1] event, which means
the FAA waiver and insurance coverage is taken care of for us.

- Flying at AP Showers will be a fun for those never having been to an
amateur rocket launch. There will be dozens (?) of amateur rocket
launches while we get set up for ours.

We hope you can still make it!

In the mean time, here's the current schedule:

- Sat March 24th, 10am - 5pm: LV3 hack day in the rocket room.

- Sun April 8th 11am - 3pm: Integration testing day at Dave's house.

- April 21-22: Launch 13 in Brother's, OR, with a target launch time of
10am Sunday morning the 22nd.

Take care,

Andrew

[PSAS] Tomorrow (Saturday 3/2) is LV3 Work Day!

2018-03-02 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

We're working on LV3 tomorrow. Come join us and work on rockets! The
agenda is roughly:

9:30am - 4:30pm: recovery system rebuild and test and SOPs and working
on LV3. This includes working on cameras for the camera ring, cabling,
umbilical ring, getting the Telemetrum up and running, etc.

1pm - 3pm: rocket room desk swap, with bonus EPL cleanup and storage
room cleanup so we get to keep our storage space in EB.

[PSAS] PSU closed; no official meeting tonight! Hangouts, maybe?

2018-02-20 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

Snow is somewhere in Portland! Panic!

;)

No meeting tonight: PSU is closed, and there may be more snow on its way
this evening.

We'll try by hangouts - http://psas.pdx.edu/hangout - but with a 10
person limit, that's not going to work out great. Try to see if you can
buddy up with someone else for the hangout.

That said, tonight's a good night to miss: no huge announcements. we're
getting closer to the April 8th launch date, and so the panic level is
rising for all things rocket related. Here's the calendar this week:

- Propulsion meeting Thursday at 4:30pm.
- TSAR meeting Friday 1:00pm
- OreSat meeting Friday 2:00pm
- OreSat structure meeting Sunday at noon.

Take care,

Thanks to the long, hard work of Eric, Joe, Jake, Elouise, Bert, EricT,

We managed to get about 2/3 of the way through re-organizing the rocket
room but then had to bail, so please excuse the mess - we'll try and

We've seen your posts in other forums; it's certainly struck up good
conversations. The OSU rocketry group is currently attempting this exact
strategy: they were attempting a 33km shot using a staging system this
last weekend, but we've not heard anything from them yet.

Note that we're not currently interested in solids: about a year ago we
made the decision to switch from solids to liquids (LOX and IPA).

Thanks! If you want to chat more, feel free to drop me an email off list.

Hi everyone,

PSAS has a booth at the Oregon Air Show this weekend. Thank you to
everyone who signed up - we could really use a few more people Saturday

Don't forget to wear your PSAS T-shirts!

Logistics:

Friday: No setup, we're doing it Saturday morning.

Saturday morning: we're meeting at the rocket room at 7:00am SHARP.
We'll pack up essentially the same stuff we did for OMSI, and drive out
to the airport.

Saturday afternoon: If you didn't get in with us in the morning, please
purchase your own ticket for $10. PSAS can reimburse you if you need it.
We're in booth 166.

Sunday morning: Same thing: purchase your own ticket to get in. We're in
booth 166.

Sunday evening: we'll pack up and drop things off at the rocket room.

[PSAS] Mooooarr people needed for OMSI Mini-Maker Faire this weekend!

2017-09-13 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

We're at the OMSI Mini-Maker Faire this weekend! We really need more
folks to come out and help, particularly Saturday morning!

Yes, it's early, but we need people to help haul things to OMSI and
setup. We're meeting at 7:30am at the rocket room (I'll bring coffee),
we'll load up rockets and other show and tell items, drive to OMSI, set
everything up, and be there for the 9:30am opening.

A few more people Saturday morning from 9:30am - 11:30am would be nice, too.

Please sign yourself up! And see you all this weekend!

[PSAS] Help with OreSat business cards?

2017-09-12 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

I need help making pretty business cards for OreSat. We have awesome
business cards for PSAS (thank you Nathan!):

https://github.com/psas/publicity/tree/gh-pages/Business-Cards

... and I'd love to have some specifically for OreSat. The info on it
should be something like:

-- Front
(Logo) OreSat
Oregon's first satellite

-- Back
Help us build Oregon's first satellite!

http://oresat.org/
@oregoncubesat
http://github.com/oresat

... a QR code would be cute, but unnecessary.

Please contact me off list if this is something you can do!

Thanks everyone!

[PSAS] No meetings tomorrow (graduation!) and Saturday rocket room cleanup

2017-06-15 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hello everyone!

## Friday

EE and ME department graduations are occurring tomorrow, so I've
canceled both the rocket room cleanup and the official OreSat meeting
for tomorrow (Friday)! Go graduate, or go watch your friends graduate!

That said, there will probably be satellite-y people in the rocket room
Friday afternoon just because, so feel free to stop by anyway :)

## Rocket Room Construction - IMPORTANT!!!

Please have ALL of your personal items and gear OUT of the rocket room
by Friday evening. This INCLUDES lockers! If we find it in the rocket
room, and it's not obviously a PSAS thing, it might get recycled. So,
please, get all of your stuff out.

Saturday at 1:00pm we're going to start preparing the rocket room for
construction. This includes deconstructing desks, recycling boxes,
moving lockers, packing our rockety bits into a tighter space, and in
general being ready for giant sheets of plastic Monday morning. If you
have time, head on down and give us a hand.

Thanks everyone, see you Saturday or next Tuesday!

2017-02-17 Thread Andrew Greenberg
CONGRATULATIONS EVERYONE! We're in!

OreSat has been officially selected for the 2017 CubeSat Launch
Initiative! Assuming we sign an uncomfortably long legal agreement and
build a safe and working satellite, we have a free ride to LEO sometime
between 2018 and 2020.

OMGYAY!!11!!

[PSAS] PSAS leadership meeting this Sunday 1:00pm!

2017-02-03 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone,

It's time to get organized!

This Sunday, starting at 1:00pm, we'd like to meet with everyone who is
interested in taking on an organizational leadership role in PSAS and
OreSat. This isn't technical leadership, this organizational and project
management. Things we'll discuss include:

- Organizational structure - what do we need?
- PSAS "officers": roles, things needing to be done, etc.
- How do we better on-board new people?
- how do we do social media, outreach, and PR better?
- Finances: where are we, and what do we need?

We'll also discuss the long list of small projects we need done. We hope
to spread the small projects around so that they actually get done, and
don't get put off because a few people are too busy. This includes:

- Ordering T shirts and distributing them
- Thank yous to recent PSAS crowdfunding campaign
- Website upgrades

We'll meet in FAB 86-01 if it's empty; if it's not empty (there may be a
workshop in there) then we'll meet in the LID project space (around the
corner from FAB 86-01 and the LID).

Hope to see you there!

Thanks,

Andrew

[PSAS] Great for a new person, even nontechnical: Move P to Inkscape

2017-01-30 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi!

We love SpaceX Kyle (really, Kyle, we do) but Kyle went insane and drew
the Piping and instrumentation diagram (P, See [1]) in Excel using...
MS Paint? Anyway, it's clearly not the right tool for this, especially
since we really need to be modifying it all the time.

There is specific CAD available for P, but it's all expensive or
Windows based. We'd like something cross platform that's free that
everyone can use.

Inkscape is not the right choice here, but it's close enough. Can
someone, hopefully someone new-ish to the the group, translate the P
over from Excel to Inkscape?

Here's the Excel version:

https://github.com/psas/liquid-engine-test-stand/blob/master/Component%20PID%20160823.xlsx

Steps would be something like:

1. Re-create and group together each little symbol on the diagram. the
yellow call out circles are the BOM reference, we still need those but
you can group them with the symbol.

2. Recreate the diagram as it is right now.

Just reply to this if you want to take this on! Hopefully it's not more
than 3 ish hours of work, and bonus points if it gets done this week.

Thanks!!

Andrew

[PSAS] Welcome new folks! Getting badge access to the rocket room

2017-01-27 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone, especially new folks from last week's orientation meeting!

There are a few things you'll want to do right away:

- Go get a Github (http://github.com) username and login. Then email it
to me, and I'll add you to our organizations: "psas" and "oresat". If
you just want one, let me know.

- Give me a google login email address, and I'll share the "PSAS shared
drive" and "OreSat shared drive" folders with you.

- If you want access to the rocket room (FAB 60-10), please email me
your name, PSU ID number, and access badget number.

Thanks and see you next Tuesday!

[PSAS] Intro meeting tonight!

2017-01-24 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

It's our quarterly PSAS intro meeting tonight! Everyone is welcome to
come, but we strongly encourage new folks to show up if they can
(Capstones, this probably means you guys).

If you're a team lead, please show up by 7:30pm to meet the new folk and
get them going on your project.

Otherwise, we'll be chatting all night but feel free to swing by later
in the evening (8pmish?) to talk rockets.

Also: pizza!

See you then.

[PSAS] CONGRATS to all three UTEAP proposal teams!

2017-01-16 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Congratulations to all three teams that just sent in their Oregon Space
Grant Consortium "Undergraduate Team Experience Award Program"
proposals. They were:

Liquid Fuel Engine Test Stand (requesting $6,860)
Electric Feed System (requesting $7,900)
Composite Fuel Tank (requesting $8,863)

All proposals are in the PSAS Shared Drive on Google Docs. They were all
extremely strong proposals, and I'm super proud of the writing quality
in all of them. Engineers aren't generally known for their writing, but
these were great.

And they had help: thanks to Ed, Erin, and Adam for helping as editors!

If we get even one of these grants, it'll make a HUGE difference for our
meager PSAS budget.

We'll hear back January 27th, so only T-10 days!

[PSAS] OSGC UTEAP proposal meetings this evening at 5pm!

2017-01-15 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone,

We have three teams who are writing proposals for the OSGC Undergraduate
Team Experience Award Program, which are due tomorrow (end of day,
Monday January 16th.

All three teams need help with the final proposal, so let's ALL meet
this evening, starting at 5:00pm. We'll start in the rocket room, and
then move to FAB 86-01 (our regular meeting room) when we get too many
people.

If you're on one of these teams, and can safely get downtown, please
join us. We'll probably go from 5:00pm until fairly late, depending on
the state of the application :)

If you're NOT on one of these teams, but grant writing excites you (you
sick, sick puppy) then please join us and help teach these engineers a
thing or two 'bout readin' an writin'.

Thanks,

Andrew

[PSAS] No official meeting tonight

2017-01-10 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hey everyone,

The snow is starting to dump in the west hills in a serious way, and
it's moving east. Highways are starting to be a mess. So no official
meeting this evening because of SnowPocalypse III.

Don't forget: crowdfunding is still going! We're 72% of our way to our
goal, don't forget to ask folks this week for our final push!

See you next Tuesday!

[PSAS] JAXA SS-250-4 launch in T-2:45!!

2017-01-10 Thread Andrew Greenberg
Hi everyone!

Ian just pointed out that JAXA is launching what could be the world's
smallest launch vehicle, the SS-250-4, in a few hours! Here's a blurb:

https://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2017/01/jaxa-ss-520-rocket-tricom-1-launch/

And here's a live stream:

Think of it like they're prototyping LV5 for us :)
